Hi, I've just come back to my soprano sax after spending almost a year concentrating on starting on my oboe, and need to start learning how to use the palm keys. I will have a go at this, thank you very much. Palm keys look well scary and difficult, but I will have a try. I play alto and straight soprano sax.
Thank you Martino! I can't seem to prevent my sax from swinging, especially when I play the palm keys. To stop this, I place the sax on my knees which isn't great. Any suggestions? Really appreciate all your great tips!!!🎷
Melanie! Nice to hear from you! Sometimes this can be caused by the poor balance of the actual saxophone. I'm not sure which model you have but some cheaper model have a very poor balance and they feel weird. If your saxophone is fine, however, be sure not to lift too many fingers when playing the palm keys as you can "loose" the saxophone so to speak. Resting the sax on the knees is not so great as the angle is slightly different than when you hold it and can cause some discomfort in your neck (I personally find that myself). Hope this helps somehow :)
@@LondonSaxophoneSchool Thank you Martino, this is great advice! That makes sense about keeping my fingers down for stability & I know you mentioned this in the video. I am always so pleased with myself when I get the palm keys right I forget about everything else. The "swinging" started happening more often when I recently upgraded to a used, but in good condition, YAS 62iii from a Jupiter. Think it is lighter in weight. I will definitely be taking your advice when I practice in a few hours. THANK YOU AGAIN, really appreciate your videos & your feedback. Take care!
I am still confused, can the palm keys be used without the octave key ? because I hear you playing only high notes but you can get lower notes without the palm key, at least I do, am i doing something wrong? thanks
Palm keys are meant to be played only with the octave key as they are keys for the higher register. If you play them without the octave key, yes, you are going to get a note but that won’t be a note in tune that can be usable in melodies. Hope this helps.
@@LondonSaxophoneSchool I use them, and they are in tune besides, how can one jump so quick from lower octave 1st to 2nd to so quick, and thrils will be impossible too
