A relationship with someone who suffers from addiction and untreated mental health issues is a one way street... sadly so many of us have endured this with friends and family. It's tragic to see someone on this downward path...meanwhile you care so much about them and any insights you have is only met with denial. Eventually, reaching your hand out to pull someone back in the boat will only pull you under... people have to decide for themselves if they want to change. All to say what you already know... disconnection is self preservation when someone is living in an illusion of grandeur.

I hear you bro. I have a friend of 45 years who just showed me his true colors. He’s so full of himself that it is running out of his mouth. He said things that are totally unacceptable. Proved what a fool he is The big problem is that I live in my house on his land I’ll have to sell my house to have the money to move. I thought that I would be here for the rest of my life. So much for that Oh well. That’s life I guess. I learned a hard lesson about trusting people. Never trust anyone but yourself. Some people SUCK

When I enrolled for treatment for alcohol 47 years ago, one of the points my counselor advice me on, was, I may have to give up some of my old friends to stay healthy. He was right, I it hard to choose friends in such a manor but it was what I had to work on to stay sober. I feel your pain and understand completely, let me just add this; it is not totally your responsibly to care for others and sometimes we just have to learn and let go. I just started tuning into your videos and appreciate the work your doing. Gracias.

You just ranted for the rest of us who have a friend that is just as crazy and drives us up the wall at the most inopportune times. The difference is most of us suffer our fools. I do not make myself available very often to my weird friend. Rarely do we do things together. We talk on occasions on the phone, but not much getting together. I guess that's why we are still friends.

It’s a tough thing to deal with…that’s probably why it’s called tough love. I’ve had to deal with it in my past. I had to cut loose a friend of 20+ years and I’d been friend with his older brother all the way back to 1969. We’d had this really great musical connection but he lacked self pride and was rude and disrespectful all the time and was always trying to take advantage of me (monetarily) and I just broke it off. I felt bad about it and felt that I didn’t do enough to help, but in reality I think I did too much. That was about 2-3 years ago and just recently he died of natural abuses but in fact was rooted in smokin’ too much dope and drink too much rot-gut whiskey. When he passed I really beat myself, again believing that I’d never done all I should have, but in the end, I was “good” with what I’d done, etc. Sadly, his older brother passed away back in ‘09 of emphysema…so now I’ve lost two of my childhood buddies, that I really miss.

That's everywhere! I owned a duplex, and we heard noise coming from the downstairs unit. My wife, and I went down, unlocked the door, and she screams! I quickly push her aside, and there's a guy laying on the floor, crack pipe in view, porno mag in one hand, and you know what in the other. I told him to get out, and pointed my 38 at him. When he stood up, I held the gun to his head (stupid angry moment) telling him don't come back! The police come, and find the crack pipe asking us is it ours? I'm like, yeah, we smoke crack all day long down here in our empty appt, we also just leave the pipe laying on the floor for you to find! That's what I was thinking, but I obviously said, no, it's the intruder's I called you out for. Anyway, an hour later, I hear more noise outside, and look down to see the same guy trying to get in again through the window which I had secured by now. I call the police again, and he is arrested. Something told me he would come back, and I considered, for a second, leaving the window unsecured so I could shoot him once he came through it for the second time. That's not me though, I can't shoot some poor, homeless addict who has a myriad of problems unbeknownst to me. 👍😎🗽✌
I learned at an early age to not lie as it just complicates things, hence I don't do anything I need to lie about. I've always been one who can look in the mirror, and see what's there, and I'm happy with the man I have become. As we all know, some people just don't mature as they age, and this friend is one of those people, very immature. Had it been me when that pipe came out, I would have stopped the car/truck, and told him to throw it out, or get out! How dare he put my life in jeopardy of going to jail. I may be a bit overreacting here, but that's just unthinkable to me that an adult, supposedly good friend would put me in that position. As a youngster I used to drive around smoking weed, and drinking all the time, I have two DUI's to show for it, but I matured, and don't want to see the inside of a cell ever again! What a donkey's ass! ✌

I always say. You always know who is a good friend when it takes no effort to be one another’s friend.
I have a close friend that I have known for years. And there are times we talk to one another a lot and it takes no effort. There’s no games played. Then there are times we get busy in our lives and don’t see each other. But when we do, we take off right where we left off.
You are so right when you say if a friend or family member gets in your head, just write them off. That one took a long time for me to learn because my parents always drilled in our brain that you never stop talking to your sibling no matter what they do to you. I’m 58 and finally wrote a family member off and it was the best thing for me. It relieve all the stress, all the games they played. I felt free.
Always nice hearing your life lessons. 🙏 And be careful. Better safe than sorry.

  • @AvengerII

    Mike,
I edited the "wall of text."
It was annoying me and we BOTH have limited time to read! LOL
I tried to cut to the point and here it is.
There is a truism I learned from reading fiction, ironically --
sometimes, the pain of keeping a relationship exceeds the reward.
I have a similar situation going on with a family member. This is someone who is so sick, they are truly mental, that they blame everyone else for their situation. You cannot deal with this person. They're going back and reliving things from 30-40 years ago. They remember things DIFFERENTLY from myself and my parents. I don't know if this is mental illness or their therapist is feeding them bullshit. I think it's both.
You have to accept some responsibility for the crap in your life BUT you are NOT responsible for all the bad things that happen to other people, either.
I've dealt with psychologists and psychiatrists -- they are not always good and helpful, and there's a lot of bullshit and frauds in that field. There's a reason why the term "psychobabble" exists. I truly believe that between them and the pharma industry they have created a greater mental crisis and lack of responsibility in North America.
Pharma and the authorities exploit each other to control the populace. As cynical as that sounds, I think the recent pandemic demonstrates this is the reasonable conclusion.
I take medication and I'm aware of and live with side-effects. Things like antidepressants are WORSE than blood pressure medication and things like lipitor. You have to know yourself and be honest. There are things I STAY AWAY from because I know it's bad for me! I could never do weed or abuse alcohol. I'm lucky where alcohol's concerned because I don't like the taste of it. I do think some types of alcohol are useful for cleaning things and treating wounds so I'm not totally against it.

@@AstroVanTribe There are people who trust physicians too much.
Some of these doctors ARE con artists and psychopaths.
I know how crazy this sounds to some people but there are higher-educated persons (MD's, PhD's) who are true psychopaths.
You unfortunately have to do your own research and pay attention and mentally file your experiences. Keep a paper trail, too!
I was in a situation a few years back where I had to get help from and receive paperwork from some doctors I'd visited in the past. At least two-thirds, three-quarters of them DID NOT provide any assisting paperwork. They were NOT legally required to provide documentation after so many years (they're allowed to throw away their patient files after a time and they EVEN LIE about what they have on file because they don't want to deal with former patients) and I was on my own. Of course, I didn't have copies of my dealings with them. That paperwork was NEVER provided OR offered for all I can remember!!!
To say I was furious with these doctors would be an understatement. Fuck those no-good assholes. They're useless pieces of shit. They can go to hell for all I care now. I don't care if they're MDs, PhDs, or whatever. Be decent people and live up to your Hippocratic oath, or *go to hell.* If they fell into a crack in the Earth, I'd probably pour gasoline on them and toss a lit match if I didn't operate a flamethrower on them!!! That's how sore I am at them. There's a point where you have stand up for yourself and STOP turning the other cheek!!!!
One of the last people I dealt with I felt was a con artist. I couldn't say this to anybody because three-quarters of the people around me loved her and thought she was great. Out of all her patients, I think there was only one other person who was skeptical about her but that guy and I kept our mouths shut. I wish I had said something and gotten away from that woman before I wasted eight months of my life around her. I don't think I got anything good from my experience with her. (BTW, I was offered an internship with her but I didn't take it. I was so stressed out after my experience that I didn't want to deal with her anymore.)
She was so good at bullshitting people that I think to this day most people are in denial about her. I concede I could be wrong but my gut is telling me I'm right on this one. I heard her say things around me. I'm not dumb. I know how cynical she was.
My mother had NO IDEA how right she was when she made the remark around me "I don't think Dr. NAME always tells the truth!"
My parents wouldn't listen to me because they were so in love with this person. Sometimes you can't say things because people are trained to believe in "professionals" regardless of their BS. I wish I'd had the guts to NOT endure what I did with that doctor. (Nothing sexual or physically harmfully happened around this person, let me clear. I think she was a pathological liar and told people what they wanted to hear.) I HATED my experiences around her at least half the time. I was constantly stressed out. OTOH, maybe it was a good thing because I learned what I did about white collar professionals and their credentials. There are adults in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and older who STILL don't trust their instincts about BS! They always think their doctors have their best interests and that this isn't about business and getting paid!!!
That's the state of healthcare in the US. It's a joke.
There are still good doctors out there but there are also lots of people who are incompetent and full of shit, too.
As I have traveled through life, I have found many college-educated people lack common sense and think they're smarter than other people because of a piece of foil-stamped paper from an institution. We have tons of people like that in industry and government who were C and D-students that got in because of personal connections, not because they were competent managers or any good at what they supposedly learned in school!
TBH, Mike, I don't think we've had a competent President of the US in decades. I think since 1989, they've been corrupt psychopaths to be frank. The worst of the worst are the smiling jerks the media praises. That's true with business and entertainment, too. The worst cheats and liars are the people the media props up the most.
I'm sorry if I sound cynical but that's what I think, too.
