weird how she sang like this before she got famous, but during her live performances in her early career she sang off tune a lot of times with an almost-monotone deep voice. she got a lot of criticism for that, people saying she can't sing, but i always felt like it was something she was told to do to maintain the "tomboy" and "rebel" image, rather than someone who can sing like this

she was just faking the deep voice because she wants to sound more rock-ish and boy-ish at the time, kinda like how Britney was forced to do the 'baby voice'. But in Avril's case, she wasn't forced to do that.

I think so too. Her real voice started to come out and blossom during her second album and you truly heard it in her third

@@batch9518 you’re right she was force singing below her normal range and her normal voice came out during her second album

I don't think she was told to do, it would have been counterproductive to do because her let go voice is exactly this one. It's a shame that the only live from let go where she uses this voice is the AOL session

I see it differently, this is my opinion:
I don't think she was forced, she just liked it. As a child and a teen when she sang gospel and country it was because of the influence of her parents and her community and the opportunities she had at the time. And she was PHENOMENAL. But she just liked and had more fun with a different style. (I myself have fun singing in certain styles am just not that good at all of them, and despite not being so good it's still "mine" and still fun. There's one style I'm better at compared to others but it's not as much fun to me.) She got more feminine all on her own terms and her singing style preference shifted on her own terms, not just sounding more feminine but certain vocal habits faded away and new ones came in, U think it was all about auditory aesthetics taste and having fun with her instrument (her vocal apparatus) rather than specifically wanting to be more feminine in her singing.
I think she has always been a bit of a stubborn person, but not when she herself "felt like" liking or doing something, then she would change because she wanted to change and had no trouble or inhibition to want to change or do something different. I think she probably felt the tomboy image was part of her identity in a sense, but as soon as she no longer felt that she had no trouble letting go of it.
This is just my view and my opinion, I hope it's good food for thought for someone!
Also, I love the official(?) studio version cover she did of Adia. The original is so iconic and so good yet I prefer her cover, and I think she sang with so much emotion and such a dynamic style, I like it so much. It's very saturated with the vocal styles I really like from her.
Btw if you haven't already check out her earlier things like she did sone country stuff and her voice is so, so good. At such a young age she had so much skill but also I think it's obvious she also had a well pronounced taste that she was aware of. I think people underestimate taste when it comes to artist's strengths. I wouldn't say I'm talented in any artform and I haven't put in effort to learn and hone any art, but whenever I do something people compliment it (as a beginner ofc) and I tried figuring out why and I think the one thing I have is taste. I know what I like and I go for it, and it takes me much longer than other beginners do finish whatever I'm doing (and it's still very much at a beginner's level) but it reflects my taste and I think that's what people end up appreciating. Anyway, I digress, I think her taste, even if country wasn't a style she particularly liked, is apparent in those songs.

This just debunks the conspiracy that she died or use double, she sang the full version of this in 2007 and she sound similar, even better in this

In a sense, she did die and was replaced. Her pure self died, and the degenerate side was born from being chewed up by the music industry and being told to present herself in a certain manner to generate more money. Poor girl.

It scares me a little, the way her head twitched in her youth. But to be honest, it gave her a zest and made her even more memorable. By the way, what do you think it is? Is it a disorder of the nervous system or the psyche?
