If I worked in a luthier's shop and changed strings every day I would do it quickly but since I only change once every few months I always go back to this video and it is SO helpful. Thank you!!!!
Thanks. Why is there no saddle in the bridge, like on a classical guitar? Also, my oud came strung in what seems an odd manner as far as which strings go to which peg - is there a diagram of the proper way anywhere so I can check to see if mine is set to correctly? Thanks, just starting to learn about everything oud!
There are some OUds with saddles. Some Iranian luthiers make them like that. I have a saddle bridge too. But they are not my favorite. They don't give the right feel or sound that we are used to for Ouds. It loses some of it's charm. However saddle bridges give a very clear sound. It's not the traditional choice. It's the same for lutes, they don't have saddle bridges either. it's all tie-on.
There are many ways to tie the strings to the pegs. Everybody seems to have their preferred method so I diagram is not going to help you because it's only one of many possibilities. Go with what the luthier intended as sometimes the holes in the pegs face certain directions making it harder to tie on the strings if you change the configuration.
How high up off the deck or the strings? Id like to see if the loop pulls the string up higher than the hole. make sense? aaah you nailed it at the end! thanks! im getting some buzzing, I think my strings are a bit low
Hello Navid. First I want to thank you for these tutorials and demonstrations. These are really invaluable and I truly appreciate your professionality and willingness to do this. I just got a Turkish oud and I am having a problem timing it. According to some Turkish oud instructors, the top first two pegs are the ones that the first pair of the strings are tied to (Re/D). But that's not the case on this oud I just got. It is a cheap oud, I must admit, but I think the strings should've been attached to the right pegs. Of course, I can change that myself. Having said that, my question is are the first pair of the strings made to make a different sound than the second pair above it? Or does it make a different sound because of tunning? They look exactly the same to me. Because I am thinking that if each pair is made especially to make a particular sound then it seems like the maker of my oud was a bit careless when he strang the oud. Any comments or suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated.
Nobody strings the Oud the same. Sometimes people just string it wrong. Listen to your teachers, but even teachers do it differently. It doesn't make a big difference.
I think w/ Geared Tuners tuning will be easier. The strings look exactally like Nylon Strings for Acoustic Guitar w/ the Bass Strings being a Familiar Silverplated Wound on a Multi-Filament Nylon Core
If you are inexperienced in changing strings, DON'T CUT THEM. Strings that are too short can come off very easily, but strings that are too long won't cause anywhere near as much trouble.
As a beginner I struggle because during tuning, pegs won' t hold the note and would just let go and roll off position. Is it a structural.problem? Or wrong type of tuning? The same two syrings tuned st the same note, one snaps and the other one doesn' t
Thanks! This is great. Had a question: I bought an Egyptian oud that arrived pre-strung with five courses, and now I'd like to add the low drone string. Unfortunately, however, they strung it so that it's the highest position which was left open at the bridge; the F course is strung where I want to put the C string, and on up. Is it possible to remove all the existing strings, place the C, and then re-string the old five courses in what would now be new positions? Or does the fact that they've already been tied/flexed/etc. mean this won't work very well? Thanks for any help you can give!
Thanks for the nice demo! Is there a preferred sequence to changing the strings? i.e. do you change first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth in that order? Thanks.
Kweli Nzito I tend to change the first strings first, then second, etc. Because I like to keep the bass strings on because they don't go out of tune, and I always go back to the strings and tune them up so they get adjusted faster. That's just my preference.
thanks for showing us the finer points like you have. I have an Oud bought from John Vartan (great Oud player), but very hard for me to string AND keep in tune, I think I've been trying to tune it too high, what is the best (lower) tuning?
Depends if it is a Turkish or Arabic oud. Arabic Ouds are tuned low to high CFADgc. Turkish Ouds are tuned generally a whole step higher. You could tune your Arabic oud even one step lower than described above. It might not sound the best. I would suggesting tuning it either as described or a half-step lower.
Thanks Nabil. Great demo. One perhaps unrelated question: when it gets humid the tuning keys get very tight and almost impossible to move. What can you do to avoid that? Thanks!
There are some options. store the instrument in it's case with those silicon packets during humid times. use a dehumidifier to keep the humidity in check. I personally don't do any of the above, I just monitor the pegs daily and loosen them if they are getting too stuck.
what is the order of all the strings? I have a oud and I'm trying to string it for the first time, so I don't know where each string goes. Its also probably worth mentioning that I'm left handed.
Hi naveed, Im buying an Oud for my brother and hes a left handed guitarist. I was wondering if I have to purchase a left handed instrument or Is there an easy way of converting a right handed oud into left handed? Im asking this because there are way more options to choose from in right handed category. Thank you so much.
Hi Babak, It is possible to just re string the Oud to correspond to left handedness. But it depends on the Oud. If you are buying an Oud above $1000 I recommend that consult with the company about it. If you're buying an entry level Oud then it might be okay to reconfigure the strings. But the slots for the strings might be wider for thicker strings and vice versa. So depending on how the Oud is designed will determine how good the result is. I don't have much experience with people doing this so it's best to ask the maker or company.
Hi Navid I have a question. I have a Turkish oud. Do i need to buy strings that are suitable for ''turkish tuning''? OR any set of strings will do? The tuning i use is: EABead
Erm, i got another question. My tuning is EABead as stated above, however the low E string, does not sound lower than A. I do not know but it gives the feeling that A sounds lower than E.....I do not what did i did wrong....If i try to lower the pitch on E, then i do not get any tune/pitch.
Thanks Navid! Was changing my strings yesterday, and the 5th peg up (from the bottom of the peg box) on the right is stuck...like frozen stuck. The humidity is not that high in my house right now...I think it is stuck from someone who messed with my oud not too long ago and really jammed the peg in there. I have another peg above it on the right side that I don't use. Can I just string the d string up to it, or will that cause problems in the long run?
That should work fine for the string. I don't anticipate serious problems. For the stuck one, you'll need to take it to a luthier, they have tricks to get those out.
cody modes I recommend trying several strings over a few years and see which set sounds best for the specific Oud. I personally prefer aquila strings for my oud.
I don't know, can you get specific? Most people seem to think smaller Ouds are more comfortable and easier to hold... Depending on what part is smaller (length vs bowl width), if it's bowl width that is smaller then you might need to get your right leg higher to bring the Oud closer to your arms. Difficult to know without seeing you hold it.
I see. I submitted a post there. I have your oudforguitarist package and am a bit confused on the tuning system. It seems though when I start to tune right high C on one of the pegs towards the right (close to the nut), I have this odd string buzz.
Aktivitat Oh I see, at first I didn't understand your question. I thought you were trying to build an Oud and wanted a diagram, and specific gauges. Please email me at support@oudforguitarists.com, I can better help you by email perhaps. It might be that your string set is high ff tuning. If you first 3 highest strings are nylons, then it might be a high ff set, which might explain the buzz. Can you send me a picture of your strings close to the bridge? Send it to that email address. I might be able to guess what strings you have on there by the thickness. Gauges are variable depending on the brand of strings, so I just recommend "Arabic" string sets.
@@itsroli that set doesn't have the low bass string. Check oudstrings.com for details on different string sets. you can buy single low bass strings from oudstrings.com
OudforGuitarists thank you. So this probably means that I have my oud strung incorrectly. What does “with optional high f “ mean? I wasn’t suppose to have bass string with this set but I’m using the wrong strings as bass strings which is why it has such low tension probably
puru make sure you draw some graphite on your Oud pegs and they will slide real nice making tuning a bit easier. Use at least an HP lead pencil or darker.
