The seventh of a set of nine short pieces for solo piano, composed in 1848 and based on forest themes, the Prophet Bird, with its cryptic title, is perhaps the most unusual of all. With sharp dissonances and colourful harmonies, it is playful, sorrowful, witty and always freshly imaginative.
