I have a feeling based on what I see on the store shelves, that this pitcher is being discontinued and replaced. The ones with the little cover over the water spout are easier to open according to videos.

Maybe you have a newer one and they caught on to our trick. It feels like they don’t want us to be able to clean it, and instead get frustrated, throw it away and buy a new one.

I just looked it up and did some math. Math is not my strong suit, but I came up with- a filter can handle 640 cups. Luckily, you can keep replacing the filter for as long as the pitcher remains in good shape/undropped.

You're wrong. It's not as easy as you think. I actually had tried popping it with a knife before seeing this video. It was the twisting motion she made that did it.
It would have been super-easy for Brita to put a note to do this in the instructions. However, I think they preferred to get multiple calls a day.
