the acting! OMG. The best Poe interpretation I've seen. I know there are not so many, but the very few representations out there are awful and totally unfair to the greatness and the "realness", the humanity, misery and perverse genius of Poe. This actor seems to have fully understood him
I've always found it odd that there's never been a biopic movie about Poe. Surely one of the most intriguing and enigmatic figures in American literature is a worthy subject to explore on film.
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most complex figures in American literature, and his life has been extensively documented in various biographies. Given the depth and intricacy of his character, attempting to capture his essence in a biopic movie presents significant challenges and risks, potentially leading to unsatisfactory or even catastrophic results.
@@salvatoremacri3343 You make a good argument and I have to agree with you. I hadn't fully considered the challenges of producing a Poe biopic that would do him justice. Thanks for your thoughtful reply.
@@salvatoremacri3343what do you mean? I think Ridley Scott did a great job with a similarly well documented, accomplished historical figure, with the masterful Napoleon 🤫😝
As an avid admirer of Edgar Poe, since childhood (let's leave Mr. Alan aside), I'm astonished how good, actually, this documentary is. I'm well four years past writers age at the time of he's demise. What I anticipated was another boring iteration of known facts about a brilliant author. You've surprised me! It's actually worth watching.
Edgar A. Poe was the first English-language author to enter my life. This happened when I was a teenager. Throughout my life I have bought and read thousands of books, many of which I have donated to libraries and to people I know. The book of Edgar A. Poe's short stories that I bought in 1981, however, remains on my bookshelf. Every now and then I like to reread one of his stories, because it helps me reflect on everyday reality in an unconventional way. I put this American author on the same level as Dante Alighieri, Goethe, Miguel de Cervantes and Virgil, to name just a few of my favorites.
Well I must say that was such a bloody good program. Some one gave up on it because of the adverts. What adverts. They were so brief and you missed out on such an interesting program.. I didn’t know anything about Poe. I always thought he was English. Very talented and yet lived a lot of his life in poverty. A great writer and he was only 40 when he died. Very good.RIP Poe. ❤
Magnificent recreation of Poe's art, mind, feelings, figure, struggles and times, excelent personification of characters, great readings and vision of his inner demons, a full tribute to the poet who died at 40 and keeps on amazing the world 😮
Edgar Poe. I will respectfully stop using the “Allan”. Well, well, slimy old Griswold goes down in history as a smear campaigning narcissist, whilst Edgar Poe is known around the world today as one of the greatest writers and poets in history. ❤
Nope, just scroll to almost the end, 10-5 mins let play for 5-10 seconds, watch ‘1’ ad, than scroll to start, And, 💥 BAM = no more ads entire video, any channel🎉 good vibes and good luck to all❤
This is absurd. They had an English actor play the part of Poe who is over 50 years old while Edgar Allan Poe died at the age of 39. In addition, the actor is English and not American, and his accent can be heard so much. With such a production was it so difficult to get an American actor ten years younger?
Poe looked old for his age is probably why they used an older dude,I mean he was a serious alcoholic and probably didn’t have a good diet,he went through a lot to and he was poor couldn’t afford much,he really only got popular After his death..so he never got to enjoy any riches his work produced, also many Americans were English ,German ,Italian ,Irish so a British Irish or a mixture of accents was way more wide spread then say a southern American accent cause I don’t think American accent was that common even in the 40s Americans mostly used Transatlantic accent which was like a mix of American and English pronunciation for awhile . Also even if he was known for a couple of stories/poems in his life time and was starting to be popular he still barely made any money from it and soon died after.
Poe wrote puffs, no doubt about it. See what he wrote about Thomas Holly Cihvers for one, but he did flatter others--particularly the women writers that he knew.
Oh hey...PBS America but it's not available if you're watching it from America? I signed up with a VPN just to tell you how much that SUCKS. DO BETTER.😡
Edgar Allan Poe is one of my top 5 favourite writers of all time.
Who are the others?
@@jandcfoodtrackers Oscar Wilde would be one of them
As far as writers of his category, him, Lovecraft and King are probably my favourites so far. I'd like to read The Yellow King eventually.

God, I wish someone would do this. Make it as compelling as that Chaplin movie with Robert Downey Jr. I’d love a two hour movie on his life!

While I appreciate your point of view... Poe, for all his problems with his foster-father, never dropped the Allan name.

Why drop Allan ? Poe didnt.
@@alexbaker9578 The video shows that he did, sometimes using only the initial, A.
Every time I see the Thumbnail for this video, I think I am looking at Tig from Sons of Anarchy.
Like most writers, Edgar Allan Poe projects himself in his works.
Referring to him as “Eddie” as one of these critics do ~when analyzing his life and work is asinine.
If you can watch this, the commercials every six minutes makes it painful. Almost giving up watching this.
Yes, agreed but I won’t begrudge PBS the income. They make great programs and get very little funding,
Pay for UA-cam premium then. I do. No ads
