Fixing My Broken Aquarium to Pour Molten Metal Into It

  • I bought a used aquarium to water cast metals, but it was broken and too big. So, I took it apart and made it smaller! I also made a catch tray for easy recovery of metal pellets.
I find water cast metal pellets to be the best for small casting and especially for mixing alloy.
The best way to store scrap metals.
If you need a detailed guide on making aquariums I've watched this one by ‪@SerpaDesign‬ and found it very informative: • Making The Best and Ea...

This is how round shot used to be made, or still made, I don't know. Molten lead was poured onto a plate with holes in it and after it fell thru the holes it fell into a tall column of water, called a Shot Tower. The tower had to be tall enough for the cooling metal to form into spheres and cool and harden before reaching the bottom of the tower. Plates with different sized holes were used to make everything from musket balls to various size shot for shotguns. If you are from the Baltimore area and wondered why that tall brick structure at the corner of E Fayette St and President St is called Shot Tower, now you know.

It's really cool that you made it so that all those things can stack into each other.

All that copper in little weird, chaotic "pellets" is a trip.
As is the glass enclosure. Looking forward to more of this madness.

Should use a jar or a plastic container to store the metal, i hate when then zip bags break and they do 😂

You should install a spigot or something to make draining the water easier.

Don't aquarium people just use hand pumps? I feel like it's just asking for leaks :')

@@BlackBeardProjects I know someone who just used a hose and siphoned the aquarium. Though if the water got in contact with molten metal, you might not want to prime the siphon by mouth.

great build although you only really need silicon on one side of the joint.
Adding a little washing up liquid will help the water contact the molten copper faster by cutting some of the surface tension
and the added bonus of making easily measurable bits and storing the furnace ...good one

I mean, you dont really have to push all that hard on the knife to cut the glass, at some point it actually makes it harder to break, i've been working with glass for few years. I dont know specific terms in english, but theres an oil which makes work way easier. Also as right handed you should cut on the right side of the stopper, its more natural move for your shoulder, less likely to mess up the cut. Altho that was a well done job.
