I’m actually surprised with how some parts of the dialogue in the 4Kids version actually remained quite close to the original source. Sanji’s statement about provoking a cook sounded okay.
But speaking of Sanji. I always thought he should have a had a stereotypical cheesy French accent instead. At least that would have been better than that thick-as nasally New York Accent 😅
And more fitting since Sanji is supposed to be French according to Oda.

@@AllTrickss I mean as much as I like to call the marines navy seems more accurate since the navy is in the sea all the time but at the same time the marines do all air, land and sea so now that I think about it marines work too, but who am I to question the original 4kids sucks so that’s that

Why changed Marine to Navy? That's odd. 🤔
Because the Japanese word for it, ‘Kaigun’ 海軍, can be translated as either Marine or Navy. 4Kids just flipped a coin on whether or not to leave it as is or translate it to Navy. To be fair to 4Kids, the marines, as we know it in real life, aren’t exactly a government organization in and of themselves; rather, they’re the ground troops who are enlisted in the Navy, who themselves are one of several limbs of the executive branch of the government.
Maybe Americans are prideful for the naval Force. And also they are more naval than marine since they are usually in the seas.

4kids Sanji isn't really that bad as people say they are in my opinion. I think the Brooklyn accent and the lollipop they gave him really fit his personality. I know that this dub was pretty much the "exact opposite of what oda originally intended" and all that, but most of the censorship and the "stereotypical" accents actually made the show more unique. Though I can kinda understand why 99.9% of fans hate it, given all the plot holes they left behind but I'm sure they'd have figured something out had they gotten any further than the post alabasta filler arcs. Bellemere still died for those who didn't quite catch the fact that her tombstone can still be seen in episode 32 where it is mentioned that bellemere has passed on. Kuina's "injury" could still have killed her but not immediately. Then again it wouldn't surprise me if oda suddenly revealed that Tashigi and Kuina were the same person. But the only question is, how? That is unless oda has already said otherwise.
The accents just suck they even did it in Jojo and it sucked but the difference between 4piece and Jojo is the Jojo dub is actually talented

There are multiple dubs, in the 4kids dub it was changed to Zolo to not confuse anyone with Zorro, another fictional swordsman.

I would say that Dragon Ball Z is probably the sole exception to that. FUNimation made some good casting calls on that one.

Anticipation of Complaints from Parents mostly. I doubt they got alot of complaints about this series initially but 4kids at the time was trying to be the Kids Anime Conglomerate and made all their shows the same way after Pokemon. Pokemon surprisingly didn't start off so heavily censored but their Censorship Practices as we know them now started slowly coming into effect after Pokemania set in and parents became aware of some of the more adult themes slipped into the shows on top of the controversy surrounding the Porygon Ep Incident. Yu-Gi-Oh was hit hard by Christians for "promoting" the Occult to kids which strangely didn't stop them from acquiring Shaman King and giving it their treatment as well. This was pretty standard with most American media at the time with guns in Super Hero shows being turned to blasters and focus on avoiding physical fighting when possible or making it as light as possible when unavoidable.
