People obviously love Johan as an antagonist for many reasons, but I always adored the way the story handles Tenma's struggle with idealism. He's a good person by actually, genuinely doing good things while being highly conflicted, not just because the story is telling us "look, your protagonist is nice and heroic when he's in a safe environment, root for him!". The moral authority in many other stories stems from the physical prowess of the protagonist. Yeah, it's easy to be forgiving and telling people to turn their life around if you're a cool sword-wielding badass. It's not so easy if you're in a physically powerless position. Junkers is confident that Tenma actually cares about him. Tenma kept him alive, but he also wants to keep giving Junkers a chance to do something with that life. Tenma has offered him more than just a medical procedure. he listened to that story about the clock, and understood that it was important. Tenma wants to make the things people care about more accessible to them. he'd literally buy the clock himself, and abandon his previous plans, just to make that happen. and, true to that sentiment, Junkers would do anything to keep Tenma away from Johan. he'd even stay there, in the dark, where he's guaranteed to die. even when he was terrified, and wanted to be saved. he starts rattling off information as fast as he can, knowing that the more he's willing to spill, the more Johan will _have_ to kill him to shut him up. Tenma gave him life, and Johan has used it to become _this._ and it's all a corruption of Tenma's initial frustration over the inequity of the hospital's politics to begin with. the way the director would pick and choose... the way others would follow along... furthermore, this also re-frames the initial poisoning. it wasn't a crime of intellect... if you consider Johan's execution of it all, it was a crime of opportunity. Lunge pointed out that the chemical in the candy was a muscle relaxant, which was why it made sense for Tenma to know what it was. Johan had gained consciousness long before anyone knew he was awake, he was in a hospital, and nobody knew it'd be dangerous not to lock up whatever meds were stored around there... and the candy was already sitting at his bedside. getting the chemicals into the candy would be as simple as picking up a bottle of something, and perhaps a syringe, just to get it inside the wrapper. still an unprecedented act for a severely injured child, but that's how Johan expresses his unique monstrousness. but if you consider Tenma's initial frustration to be the true "motive" that he unknowingly conveyed to Johan... then this was an emotional and spontaneous crime.
@@Ash_Wen-li same, and for Tenma too... it's one thing to lose a patient because their condition was too poor, they couldn't be brought in soon enough, there was nothing anyone could do, etc... it's another thing when you've basically saved a man's life, only for it to be cut short on purpose, before the bandages are even off. it perfectly paints Tenma and Johan as people who undo each other's signature work.
This is true but to most of the people (including me) who don't look too much into it. it felt like he was just some npc who was introduced only to get killed by the antagonist and reveal/introduce him (Johan) into the story... Love you dude haha 🤣
@@Pathetic-Ali I actually kind of love that quality about Monster... Junkers is basically an NPC, but there are a lot of characters like that in the early part of the story. and rather than feeling like filler, this feels like Dr. Tenma building his rapport with us, the audience. [SPOILERS] upcoming, we have several episodes which display this side of Tenma, where he kind of "can't help but do all the side quests" as he pursues his main mission of killing Johan. there's the man who teaches him to shoot, and the little girl that Tenma helps him bond with... the doctor who wants to save the woman he's fallen in love with, even when she refuses to go to the hospital... there's everything that happens with Deiter... and Tenma even finds a principled way to help the terrorist that Heckel wants Tenma to treat, solely for the pay, which Tenma doesn't take. that's not what this was about for him. everywhere Tenma goes, he can't help but leave an impression. and the impression he leaves is so overwhelmingly positive, that multiple people decide, very quickly after meeting him, that they will not help Lunge find him, or otherwise hand him over to the authorities... and this includes at least one man who is a police officer. Tenma just has such unassailably good character that it becomes unthinkable to them that Tenma would deserve to be placed under the scrutiny of the law. against the authority of enforcers, judges, or juries, these people make a judgement call on their own, and find Tenma to be innocent of wrongdoing... even if they can't guarantee he's innocent of crime. there's a difference, and a lot of these people are equipped to know that. in fact, one of Tenma's defining features is that he gives people a chance. even, or perhaps especially, when they won't do the same for themselves. a lot of these characters cross paths with Tenma for only a brief moment, and hardly appear again after that. but Tenma won't treat them as expendable or unremarkable. he treats himself as the passerby in their lives... and he won't leave them worse than he found them. it really does paint him as the anti-Johan (and Johan as the anti-Tenma) because of how inverse their effects are on others. they're always undoing each other's most impressive work, somehow. but yeah, I can't wait to get to some of these episodes! so many of them are so good, even as just stand alone stories. I'm glad we're both on board for this reaction series too, this is gonna be a lot of fun.☺
@@kamuyking551 this is 100% true, I have said many times that I loved these (bOrInG) episodes more the *actual story* . Unfortunately, for many people, those episodes are nothing more than fillers or boring parts. I actually kinda loved those episodes even more than the actual story ngl. (And just for saying this I have been brutally roasted by others many times haha 😂) SPOILERS I am actually one of the people who didn't quite like the ending of monster. But I think near the end of this rewatch journey I'll change my mind 👀👀. It's not like I completely hate it. I can understand that there was symbolism and thematic reasons for that ending, I understood most of it but still tho. But I guess, I was expecting a realistic ending 🤷. It's not that I completely hated the ending (it is in my top 10). For me it was like, "it's hard to swallow but I can digest it"...
@@KrawbsFor me in anime is tied with Griffith in 1st place but if you consider manga or VN also i would put Bernkastel & Beatrice from Umineko higher than them or Morgana from House in Fata Morgana as well (those taking into account VN). I would also say that the main antagonist from Usogui manga is at that level also.
@@Mackay-z4rI haven't read Usogui yet but if we're including VN's then yeah Beato and Morgana are up there. I definitely like them them more as characters than Johan. But it's hard for me to call them villains. More like antagonists imo
@@Mackay-z4r Griffith is iconic but I also think besides that one major betrayal he did, most of his actions are kind of vague on the villain scale. He is mostly doing good even post Eclipse and whatever the climax of what he is doing has and may not be realized for hindsight to ever see why it was evil. The world views him as a savior and he is doing overall good things. So I don't think he is a top villain due to not having consistent villain-like activities throughout the story but he is one of the most iconic villains due to what he has done. IMO
I was waiting 5 days for the next reaction and I was already afraid that he won't upload it today. But now it is here and I'm so happy to see his reaction to the episode. I'm already enjoying our Journey of Monster. Monster is clearly an unknown Masterpiece🤫❤
this is exactly why Johan to be soo terrifying he looks like anyone else so anyone can be a Johan and you won't know it until its far too late so i hope your ready cause Johan will cause you far more nightmares then you will ever expect him to
Part of what makes Johan such an affective villain is he's monstrous, but not outwardly so at all. He's basically a nihilist with a concerning amount of intelligence and charisma (though obviously there's more to him than that). Keep that original theory you had about Tenma potentially being the monster in mind for later (not for the reason you'd think).
If we talking about all of Japanese media (including anime, manga, visual novels, light novels, games, etc.) then I'll give that title to GRIFFITH, but still definitely Top 5!
The ending doesn't really have any spoilers. It's just a strange story being shown in slides that makes very little sense until the show is over. And even then, it requires some thought to draw any correlation. Plus, the song itself is haunting and good lol. The images also change throughout time revealing more and more of this strange story. Very unique.
Probably not what you were expecting of this so called Monster. And with the title drop now you know who the "Monster" is! The start of this journey and battle between Tenma vs Johan has begun! 😄It does make you wonder if he regrets his choice of not doing the surgery on the Mayor instead, but in this sense he has created a Monster. Although I personally would've done the same thing as Tenma though considering how much of a douche the Director was. Loving your reactions as you had said going in completely blind or not knowing a clue about the genre or this anime has really made for such amazing reactions from you and I have been loving this journey and riding it with you! 💖
That's the thing. Johan looks handsome. He has charisma, he can give you a false sense of security. That's why in my opinion, he is the most realistic villain. He surpasses Light Yagami because he doesn't have any super powers.
This show is so great because Dr. Tenma is such a pure and kind protagonist, and "Johann" is such an Evil antagonist. But the whole story doesn't stop there! I know you will enjoy how this all develops and unfolds.
Excited to see you go on your journey with Monster, it's fantastic. I'd suggest checking up on the outro since there's some differences over time, however, don't even bother with the "on the next episode of Monster..." stuff, it's way better to go in without expectation.
27:14 Johan said that this wasn't his real name, suggesting that the Lieberts were not his parents. He also said he was killing people who knew about him.
The ending is just one image. That will change fro few episodes. It's like a flip-book. No spoiler, don't worry. :D And, for the after-credit scene is just a preview for the next episodes. For some episodes, it can spoil a lot, depending on the context. I would say it's okay to watch the after-credit scene.
The terrifying thing about Johan isn't just that he looks normal, but it's that he looks *handsome!* Monster does a really good job of not falling into anime tropes and making everyone feel like a normal human being with little imperfections here and there. But then Johan shows up looking like he could be in a boy band and it's just like geez, man! I remember someone saying the thing that scared them most about Death Note was Light was a valedictorian son of a cop while the detective trying to catch him was an autistic shut in, and it's not a challenge to figure out who most people would believe between the two. I get similar vibes here
imagine being in Tenma's shoes..... you risked your career to save someone's life believing that all lives are worth saving and the person who you save becomes a mass murderer
Great reaction, as usual. Interesting theories. I can't wait to watch your next Monster reactions. As for the ending, what is shown visually throughout it changes as the series progresses but it is the same song, and I personally suggest that you watch it. I believe that the content will not spoil anything for you because you will not understand its context. At most, it may only serve as an element for you to theorize but nothing more.
Dude! AND IT'S JUST STARTING!!! I truly love how this series comes with the idea of good and evil. Tenma wanted to do good and be authentic to his feelings. Johan, in the opposite, is an authentic and horrific evil monster. Still a few more character left to finish to formulate this concept, but it already started to shaped as the author wanted.
johan libert suddenlt reveal his hiden identity as agent twilight and that he taking care of telepatic kid , future reading dog and social worker wife and he is really a descendent of tanya the evil it all make sense it all thake place roughly in the same area where is frankie though
A bit of correction johan never wanted tenma to save him U will realise it down the line The thank u for saving my life was just a sarcastic remark more than a thank u.
The subtitles can be a bit hard to read. Personally I re-read the manga recently so missing the dialogue isn't a big deal to me but I can see how it would be a problem for others
And now we get into the real meat of Monster. To your musing earlier of you loving the show if it continues on like this, to that I say yes and no. The story will continue on, however there are plenty of episodic episodes that either dive deeper into the broader themes of monsters, or do a lot character dissection in addition to further the main story. You're gonna get a lot of episodes as well that just seem random, but do have a fair amount of significance, so don't be afraid to really take your time either during the episode or after to sit and place your thoughts, theories and philosophical musings :)
Also don't forget Dr. Tenma made the decision to operate on Johan, which resulted in the mayor's death. Thus in a way you can say Tenma's decision resulted in the death of 16 people in counting, and maybe more who were killed by Johan since. A lot of feelings to take in all at once. Of course Tenma didn't kill anyone but with his ego and passion of saving lives, this would be all he could think of in those moments.
You have the memory of a goldfish. Even if the OP/ED has light spoilers, you’ll probably forget it anyway. If the anime’s director didn’t want you to watch post credit scenes, they wouldn’t have included them.
In my opinion Johan is one of the best Villains in animanga because even though he has not much screentime he is pulling the strings from the shadows and besides his intellect and manipulating skills he has no superpowers like the generic shounen villain
Trust me you have no idea of what will happen in this series, the characters even the ones you see briefly they feel like real human. Since Monster is going to be a long journey of 74 episodes, you might want to keep some notes, some details may definitely go over your head in the long run. Loving your reaction by the way.
the ending has no spoilers , it's just a weird story(you will understand the story after you reach an episoide), and it changes every big event in the anime
can't you do a black border around the subtitles or unblure where the subtitles are? It's still hard to read especially when the scene is bright which it often is in the hospital because of the white walls. the dub is also fantastic
Johan should have looked a lot prettier. If you look at manga pages you get what I'm saying. It's stated that Johans beauty is the closest thing we have to what Lucifer might have looked like when he was still an angel aka the most beautiful angel ever which also let to his prideful nature and downfall. And that is really crazy if you think about it because johan is not prideful. He just feels nothing when he murders. But I like the "normal" look of Johan in this series
I don't think the op or ed are spoilery. With the ed its really eerie, honeslty whilst I appreciated it from later on the story I do think its kind of boring and barely ever watched it.
i think you should watch the ed.. you won't get anything out of it till the show reviel things and only then you can connect your dots.. so i dont see a reason not to see it
this is actually so cruel and guilt trips him the rest of his life. He intended to prefer rescuing an - in his opinion - innocent, pure child over a corrupt politician - aside from the fact who came in first but ended up rescuing somebody that later kills people - the true horror of being a doctor. You rescue a life (wanting to do the good right thing) but that results in more people dying.
@@Ash_Wen-li It is not being said openly but given the introduction these corrupt doctors got and the fact that they said HE (the mayor THEY obviously associate with) must survive because of the money he will use to fund the hospital makes me believe that he is also corrupt (birds of a feather usually flock together) to a certain extent. Otherwise the hospital would not have to fear not getting any of these funds if the mayor suddenly changes. Yes I know this is totally a speculation here but I think it is very likely. Apart from that is the main point of my comment that he rescued a person(child) that later on kills people and that will haunt him forever.
@@SahilRawal-fe7qc he was talking about the parents not being biological, the potential that the twins could be adopted, and how that could line up with the other cases involving childless couples.

upcoming, we have several episodes which display this side of Tenma, where he kind of "can't help but do all the side quests" as he pursues his main mission of killing Johan. there's the man who teaches him to shoot, and the little girl that Tenma helps him bond with... the doctor who wants to save the woman he's fallen in love with, even when she refuses to go to the hospital... there's everything that happens with Deiter... and Tenma even finds a principled way to help the terrorist that Heckel wants Tenma to treat, solely for the pay, which Tenma doesn't take. that's not what this was about for him.
everywhere Tenma goes, he can't help but leave an impression. and the impression he leaves is so overwhelmingly positive, that multiple people decide, very quickly after meeting him, that they will not help Lunge find him, or otherwise hand him over to the authorities... and this includes at least one man who is a police officer.
(And just for saying this I have been brutally roasted by others many times haha 😂)
SPOILERS
I am actually one of the people who didn't quite like the ending of monster.
This is it. The one scene I vaguely knew of. The identity of the so called "Monster". Now I am 100% blind going forward and I'm so excited!
I was... Just... About to sleep....
Welp. Can't do that no more
same lol
Sleeping after this episode might be tough too 👀
And now we meet perhaps the greatest villain in anime.
In my top 5 at the very least
I agree. He is a top 5 villain of all time. PERIOD.
IMO
@@Mackay-z4r I have read Usogui and while it is my favorite manga and the antagonist is one of my favorites, I'd still say Johan is better.
Best antagonist in all anime imo..
In all entertainment media
As for me, the "Friend" from the manga "20 century boys" from the same author is the best villain. Still waiting for the anime adaptation
@@RubKiwi it's never happening lol
shares place 1 with griffith in my oppinion
If we talking about all of Japanese media (including anime, manga, visual novels, light novels, games, etc.) then I'll give that title to GRIFFITH, but still definitely Top 5!
Munch munch, chomp chomp, gobble gobble, gulp.
🥶
Mods be like "OH NOO SPOILERS!!!!"
There are no spoilers in the endings and I would say it's important to watch to understand a little better context of what will happen in the future.
You may want to get a notebook, because you're going to be introduced to a ton of characters
That's the thing. Johan looks handsome. He has charisma, he can give you a false sense of security. That's why in my opinion, he is the most realistic villain. He surpasses Light Yagami because he doesn't have any super powers.
“He’s better than Light Yagami because he has no super powers.” isn’t the right argument here, though yes, he is overall more capable.
Johan poisoned the candy to kill the director because he overheard tenma's little rant to himself in episode 1
12:27 oh i loved that game man, very similar vibes youre right
I just finished watching this so that I could watch the reactions. It's a slow burn, but really, really good
This show is so great because Dr. Tenma is such a pure and kind protagonist, and "Johann" is such an Evil antagonist.
But the whole story doesn't stop there!
I know you will enjoy how this all develops and unfolds.
This man isn't ready for how complex of a character Johan Liebert is...
best anime of all time
Johann, Junkers etc. It is pronounced like Y in yes. They are German names, like in Frieren
Excited to see you go on your journey with Monster, it's fantastic. I'd suggest checking up on the outro since there's some differences over time, however, don't even bother with the "on the next episode of Monster..." stuff, it's way better to go in without expectation.
THE EPISODE
27:14 Johan said that this wasn't his real name, suggesting that the Lieberts were not his parents. He also said he was killing people who knew about him.
👀
No way i was literally just watching the last episode 😂
The ending is just one image. That will change fro few episodes. It's like a flip-book. No spoiler, don't worry. :D
And, for the after-credit scene is just a preview for the next episodes. For some episodes, it can spoil a lot, depending on the context. I would say it's okay to watch the after-credit scene.
Not only does Johan look normal, but he straight up looks handsome/pretty. Like seriously, blonde haired twink fr fr.
Top 3 villains in entertainment media
1- Johan liebert
2- Shogo makishima
3- Griffith
Makishima is top tier but I'd put Char Aznable in my top 3
Ereh yeagah 🕊️ also deserves to be in the top 5 imo
Finally makishima is being mentioned
The terrifying thing about Johan isn't just that he looks normal, but it's that he looks *handsome!* Monster does a really good job of not falling into anime tropes and making everyone feel like a normal human being with little imperfections here and there. But then Johan shows up looking like he could be in a boy band and it's just like geez, man!
I remember someone saying the thing that scared them most about Death Note was Light was a valedictorian son of a cop while the detective trying to catch him was an autistic shut in, and it's not a challenge to figure out who most people would believe between the two. I get similar vibes here
Thank you too for watching it and love it! Let me tell you this is an interesting story when the time passes
I've seen Monster. The endings are definitely worth watching. No spoilers in it but should be considered part of the anime.
Johan is like top 5 best villains in anime 10000000000000000000000000% enjoy the ride
one of the best seinen psychological mystery thriller out there from Puppah Urasawa, it inspired one of my manga characters lol
imagine being in Tenma's shoes..... you risked your career to save someone's life believing that all lives are worth saving and the person who you save becomes a mass murderer
I watch most of this reactions in bed before sleep. And I'm not amused by how tense and "scary" this episode was. 😢
You have to watch the ending. It's part of the experience
Luke. You are asking the right questions.
In this case, you need to watch this ED song Luke
watch the endings!! theyre important and change over time!
johan libert suddenlt reveal his hiden identity as agent twilight and that he taking care of telepatic kid , future reading dog and social worker wife
and he is really a descendent of tanya the evil
it all make sense it all thake place roughly in the same area
where is frankie though
A bit of correction johan never wanted tenma to save him
U will realise it down the line
The thank u for saving my life was just a sarcastic remark more than a thank u.
LETSGOO EP 4 GOATED
Also don't forget Dr. Tenma made the decision to operate on Johan, which resulted in the mayor's death.
Thus in a way you can say Tenma's decision resulted in the death of 16 people in counting, and maybe more who were killed by Johan since. A lot of feelings to take in all at once.
Of course Tenma didn't kill anyone but with his ego and passion of saving lives, this would be all he could think of in those moments.
And so it begins
You have the memory of a goldfish. Even if the OP/ED has light spoilers, you’ll probably forget it anyway. If the anime’s director didn’t want you to watch post credit scenes, they wouldn’t have included them.
In my opinion Johan is one of the best Villains in animanga because even though he has not much screentime he is pulling the strings from the shadows and besides his intellect and manipulating skills he has no superpowers like the generic shounen villain
Hey 👋
Please I don't want to Wait another week for the next video.
Greattttt
Was waiting for this.
Trust me you have no idea of what will happen in this series, the characters even the ones you see briefly they feel like real human. Since Monster is going to be a long journey of 74 episodes, you might want to keep some notes, some details may definitely go over your head in the long run.
Loving your reaction by the way.
Guys you can also watch The flux react for good monster reaction
FINALLY! THE EPISODE WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR 🤌
JOHAN IS UP THERE IN ONE OF MY TOP 3 MOST FAVOURITE ANTAGONISTS IN ALL OF ANIME 🛐
the ending has no spoilers , it's just a weird story(you will understand the story after you reach an episoide), and it changes every big event in the anime
Now I have a wait a whole week 😔
Greatest Villain of all Time in Anime World...
Johan Liebert
The nihilistic monster arived
your theory means nothing in this anime remember that🤫
The ending credits do may have spoiler, but you won’t be spoiler at all.
can't you do a black border around the subtitles or unblure where the subtitles are? It's still hard to read especially when the scene is bright which it often is in the hospital because of the white walls. the dub is also fantastic
Oh man, now with the Johan reveal, things are about to ramp up real fast. Knowing how much influence he has on people throughout the series. Scary
Actually you need to watch the outro
I don't think the op or ed are spoilery. With the ed its really eerie, honeslty whilst I appreciated it from later on the story I do think its kind of boring and barely ever watched it.
I'm first brooooo
W
It is better not to go to Japan and talk about Johan to people whose age is between 30 and 50. It will make them shudder.
i think you should watch the ed.. you won't get anything out of it till the show reviel things and only then you can connect your dots.. so i dont see a reason not to see it
I was waiting so much for Demon Slayer Episode.... just noticed its Friday 😭
this is actually so cruel and guilt trips him the rest of his life.
No one ever said the Mayor was corrupt. Johan just came first. It's as simple as that. Tenma would actually disagree with weighing lives like that
@@Ash_Wen-li It is not being said openly but given the introduction these corrupt doctors got and the fact that they said HE (the mayor THEY obviously associate with) must survive because of the money he will use to fund the hospital makes me believe that he is also corrupt (birds of a feather usually flock together) to a certain extent. Otherwise the hospital would not have to fear not getting any of these funds if the mayor suddenly changes.
Yes I know this is totally a speculation here but I think it is very likely. Apart from that is the main point of my comment that he rescued a person(child) that later on kills people and that will haunt him forever.
oh no he is hot!
How can a twin be not biological brother and sister lol😂😂
Just partly joking, but... You heard about Dolly sheep, right. 😜
@@SahilRawal-fe7qc he was talking about the parents not being biological, the potential that the twins could be adopted, and how that could line up with the other cases involving childless couples.

Right. Be careful what you wish for. And _where_ you say your wishes aloud.

Right. That's the face of an absolute joker.
05:10 Apparently, these cops were told to monitor the room, not the suspect. For some reason.
