- Abandoned Rax / Subway Combo - South Greensburg, PA. Enjoy a look at this odd former combo restaurant. I didn't know of any Rax and Subway comination restaurants. The Rax closed several years ago while Subway staued open until Summer 2022. Now the place is completely vacated. Also found another restaurant sign behind the dumpsters. Enjoy this little look.

Wallie, I’m going to blow your mind and show my age at the same time. This building originally opened as a Winky’s. The Arby’s over by New Kensington is the same building, a former Winky’s. The other, now demolished building like that was In Connellsville as an Arby’s.
Interesting piece of information. Thanks for sharing. Do you know if this was the original Winky's building and they just remodeled it, or if they demolished the Winky's building and built a new building in its place?

Before this was Rax it was originally a Winkey's back in the 70s and early 80s. Then it wasArby's, then Rax/Subway.
I get sad how everything is closing my heart hurt to see that .sometime I want to reopen our favorite places..
I grew up in Greensburg in the ‘90s and 2000s, and I definitely remember when this building had both Rax and Subway signage. I had no clue it was an Arby’s, though, or even before that, was a Winky’s way back in the ‘60s. Awesome video, and so glad to see you in my hometown!

"You can see drive-thru service BIG time on that sign" feels like it should be right up there with "Look at the front, where it says AMES real big!" That's an early-80s Arby's sign so maybe they tried Arby's for a bit and the original franchisee went independent?
Wow! What a rarity! I’d never thought Rax partnered up with Subway at one point. Interesting. Also upon looking on street view, that Arbys sign has been sitting there for over 10 years.
I used to walk to the subway all the time. It always had the same "Under New Management" sign that they wouldn't take down for a year or two.
I have lived in Greensburg all my life. I remember this building was a Rax, Arby's, Belly Buster, Subway, Rax, Rax/subway, and just Subway...I am probably missing some in there as well. Very cool.
Ha! I just went past there not long ago and I mentioned that it looks like Subway just closed also! LOL wasn't sure...
WOW! There was a Rax in my town, later a Wendy's. A tree came down and crashed through the glass part and it was condemned with the tree continuing to grow in it until it caught fire and was demolished. You should visit Detroit some time.
Very familiar with that area, hubby worked just up the road. I lived in south Greensburg as a child& I am now 76. Good video. Thanks .

I just went to Subway this evening for my dinner. That particular Subway I stopped at does have a drive-thru. It's the only one in this area, the foothills in NC. We used to have another drive-thru Subway at a convenience store. The Subway is still there, but they closed up the drive-thru part years ago.
Yeah there's one in my town that has a touch screen ordering doo-dad for the drive-thru too. It's not too bad. Quite a few have closed in the past few years. The one near my work is unreliable, you never know what days its going to be open. Plus a truck drove through it a couple of weeks ago.
Years ago there was a rax in Lancaster pa and now it's a 5 guys hamburgers and with in the past few years they had some hosses restaurants in Chester County and Lancaster and berks the pretty much pulled out of those areas I think the closes hosses now you have to go to the Hershey pa or York area now.
With the price gouging by subway we'll see more of them closed. 😔

What a Bizarre combo! The closest I got to this combo near me is a Subway/Tacos AL CARTEL combo that was a Subway/Matador Combo.

Glad you caught the Arby's sign. That is very interesting. If they had both signs you could make a kid an interesting play house/ clubhouse. Very nice.
What an awesome find. I love both the Rax sign and the Arby’s sign. We used to have Rax here in Florida and in my area we still have some former Rax buildings that have become home to other restaurants.

The old abandoned Subway on Rt.981 in Latrobe had a drive through that was almost like a tunnel lol

I wish that we had Rax in New Mexico to my knowledge, we just have Arby's here I'm not sure what all fast food places are in Albuquerque Back in the day I remember the highway exit signs for Rax when traveling through Pennsylvania

One that I miss is the Ground Round that used to be outside Westmoreland Mall, they made a fantastic delmonico...used to be a Ponderosa out there too a long time ago

I miss Rax Restaurants.
There used to be a Rax where the Dunkin Donuts is now on Route 30, best turkey bacon clubs and creamy cole slaw ever, and it was right down the street from me

That building has been going to hell for years not sure why because the Dunkin donuts and Hoss' next door are always busy! I am there alot in SW Greensburg I can see my old doctor office in your vid in the background LOL 🤣

Hey Wallie, been here all my life and still live close to this. I used to go to Winky's there for burgers and fries all the time. It became an Arby's when Winky's closed and they added the drive-thru window. Subway came on board later, but when Rax left Subway remained though business apparently fell off and the building appeared to be deteriorating. It appeared dark when it was open looking like it was closed. I believe that was the original buiding and I can say that I miss those days.

I worked at this location from roughly 2007-2010. It was operated by Rob Holmberg (former Oakland Raiders). It operated as a rax/subway for several years till I wanna say getting rid of the rax side around 2009ish. The drive thru was still used for subway though but I remember it was often broken. When my mom was younger she used to go there when it was winkys used to tell me all the time when she'd take me to work.

I'm not from the area, but according to multiple people who have commented on this video, this place was originally a Winky's restaurant. I did some research and found that Winky's was a regional chain of fast food restaurants that operated in, and around the Pittsburgh area. They sold items such as hamburgers and french fries, roast beef sandwiches, chicken and fish.
The first Winky's restaurant opened in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania in February 1962 and at its peak, had around 42 locations. Their plan was to expand into a nationwide hamburger chain, much like McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's, but I guess they couldn't get the financial backing and in 1982, Winky's filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and went out of business. I was able to find some old commercials from the chain from 1976 on UA-cam.

Here,in the Detroit and Southeastern Michigan area. Subway has Drive Through Windows in the stand alone restaurants. The,Subways that are located in Gas Stations don't have Drive Through Windows. The,Subway locations in Downtown Detroit and the one located in the GM World Headquarters,(formally the Renaissance Center)don't have Drive Through Windows. And,Subway has been closing restaurants in the Detroit area permanently.

that place was a dive at the end, they couldn't keep staff so it was a toss in the hat if they'd be open and if they were they barley had ingredients.

Hey Wally that's pretty cool to see a rax Subway combo we don't have those where I live but we have a Dunkin' donuts Subway combo. They're very rare but they are out there in upstate New York Central New York area Syracuse where I live. I know there's one across the street from the Great Northern Mall in Clay New York Wally you may have seen Anthony's videos this most recent video when he came back to do a video on the mall. Never knew that they were partnered with rax back in the day pretty cool you have the choice of getting a healthy sub from Subway or you can go to unhealthy fast food rax to get it unhealthy sandwich from them. Same way with us here in New York state New York you have unhealthy Dunkin' donuts next to a healthy Subway so when you go to get your sub you're attempted to go get unhealthy donut for dessert and spoil your diet. But pretty cool though that they were like that. Though Dunkin donuts was the only combo store they combined with but nope you show here they come bind also with rax cool.

Definitely looks like an Arby's restaurant from the 1980s. I'm guessing Arby's closed in the mid 1990s, and that's when Rax and Subway came to town. Had no idea Rax was even in the Pittsburgh area in the late 2000s. I thought all the Rax locations in Western Pennsylvania closed by around 2005 or so. I definitely remember when Rax was all over Western Pennsylvania, though that was a long time ago.
