So many times when reading this, I would think "this would never happen..."...but then knowing it did is what makes it so horrible. I haven't read off season yet, but I think I have it on my kindle

I knew about the real event going into this novel. It's very horrible and upsetting, like life. I finished Off Season, so that will be coming soon.

Hope you do but keep everything I said in this video in mind. It's very difficult to read at times.

It’s not about reading Ketchum, it’s this book specifically. I read it over a decade ago and I’m rereading it now. “I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone,” is what I say. It is my favorite book. I don’t feel easily, but this makes me feel. Especially knowing it isn’t fiction.

This one just may have to go on my wish list.

I think what makes this book so horrific is that you really like David, and he does nothing to help Meg. I read this over 30 years ago and it still gives me the chills. I can't bring myself to reread it. It is the most disturbing book I've ever read. Off Season doesn't compare in my opinion.

I think that he does try, he even basically unlocks the door and tells her that at a specific time, she can escape. I have finished Off Season.

He did try. You have to remember he is a 12 year old. I can’t imagine…also considering everyone else is against him and he puts himself in danger trying to help her? A dozen or more people against him? Most older? Adults and all? I felt/feel horrible for him. I am rereading it right now. He wasn’t a terrible person. He was basically forced into the position and it’s absolutely tragic. The beginning says how much it ruined him. If he could have saved them he would have. He was beyond at the bottom of the totem pole. His life could have been at risk…this book didn’t affect me when I was like 16. Now it is…sheeesh.

I haven’t read Off Season, but I know exactly what it is about. There is no comparison between the two. If this is in the top 10 of all time “best” horror or most devastating fiction I get why. Off Season is just purely fiction. It’s on my list though.

Thanks for this comment. We must remember that this book is based on real events. Have you seen the movie, I recommend it. I want to reread the book now.

@@davidsbookreviews4983 I know it is based off of real events and may Sylvia Likens rest in peace…I did watch the movie. I couldn’t stand it, personally. I am not the type of person that thinks books are always better than movies, but I honestly wish that had never been made. That’s just my opinion.
