- Daniil Medvedev and Stan Wawrinka meet in a 2019 US Open quarterfinal match-up featuring two players on hot streaks with growing optimism of their chances to capture the title at the year's last Grand Slam.
The No. 5 seed Medvedev had a blazing summer run through the hard-court swing, reaching three consecutive finals, winning at Cincinnati and putting up a gaudy 17-2 match record.
The highest-ranked Russian in almost a decade, he has not slowed down much in working his way through the first four rounds here to a career first Slam quarterfinal showing.
The No. 23 seed Wawrinka boasts an impressive Grand Slam resume, featuring titles at the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open.
He is in the final eight here for the sixth time. He scored the tournament’s biggest upset when world No. 1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic was forced to retire with a shoulder injury in the third set of their primetime fourth-round match on Sunday night.
Medvedev beat Wawrinka on the Wimbledon grass two years ago in the pair’s only previous match.
