    As snakes grow, their skin does not grow with them. Because of that they need to shed their skin. This process happens from time to time and it depends on the speed of growth of each snake. Young snakes grow faster so they also shed their skin more often than adults. We show you a wild Herald snake (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia) from South Africa during shedding its skin. Snakes are vulnerable when they shed their skin so it is not very common to observe this behavior in nature. We got lucky and you can enjoy watching it in our video!

    I like at the end as he's getting in strike mode, he says "sike" and splits real fast. That Herald,
    he's such a nice snake:) What a character..

      It was a beautiful snake! At the end it finally realized that we are around, was a bit defensive and then left 🙂

    I'm South African and the Drakensberg (Dragon Mountains) are my favourite. Never heard of that type of snake, so thanks for sharing new knowledge.

    Two things. 1) I was fascinated by the ant biting or chewing on the shed skin at around 6.20 and 2) Does it flatten its head to make itself look more dangerous, more viperish?

    • @LivingZoology
      @LivingZoology  4 місяці тому +2

      Ants often come into our frame! Yes, when Herald snakes flatten their necks it is a defensive behavior.

    Venomous?

    • @LivingZoology
      @LivingZoology  4 місяці тому

      It has rear fangs - mildly venomous to humans. If the snake has a chance to chew on you, you may experience some local pain and swelling.
