In this video presentation, Vladimir London, a Life Drawing Academy tutor (Get Free Figure Drawing Video Lessons - lifedrawing.ac...) will show how to depict a female figure in contrapposto using skeletal and muscular anatomy that every figurative artist must know. When you sketch female figures, there is no need in depicting their internal construction, but this demo shows what kind of knowledge a proficient artist must have to realistically outline a body in a fast and easy sketch. This process begins with marking in yellow ink a virtual skeletal structure of a body. The figure is in contrapposto, which means that its weight is shifted to one leg, while the other supports it balance. The vertical virtual line that goes from the top of the figure to its footprint serves the purpose of measuring vertical proportions of a body as well as keeping the figure drawing in balance. The pit of the neck points straight down to the foot, making this figure static. When the main skeletal masses are in place, an artist might depict volumes of muscles that envelop the bones. Good knowledge of main muscles, their shapes, sizes, points of origins and insertions is required to draw such musculature realistically. In this video, the artist uses an anatomical model to demonstrate those muscles that shape the contours and outlines of a female figure. Of course, when sketching from imagination or drawing from life, anatomy can be held in mind rather than depicted on paper, but in every case, an adequate knowledge of anatomy for artists it would be necessary.
