Building A Log Cabin | Ep. 46 | Off-grid power for the winter | Fixing a leaking roof

  • Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). This cabin will function fully off-grid and will be only accessible by foot. Subscribe to follow our journey!
    In this episode, we are stuck fixing a big mistake we made. We installed the roof insulation too close to the plywood sheathing, and discovered a big condensation problem that was causing leaking through our chimney. We were forced to rip off all the vapor barrier and insulation. We solved the problem by attaching 2x4s to the underside of our roof rafters, which dropped our insulation down by 1.5 inches, allowing for adequate airflow between the insulation and plywood. We get back on track by finishing the floorboards of the mezzanine. Lastly, we install a 100W solar panel to give us some electricity over winter. This will just be a temporary power solution for winter, and in the spring we will be installing a full system to power the whole cabin.
    We are learning a lot as we are doing (as always), so don't hesitate if you have any questions, it will be a pleasure to share tips and tricks, if possible.

    there are these 'panels' that go between rafters - they are used to make the venting gap between roof and insulation - they are plastic and shaped like a wide channel... for your next place if you build
    there is a tool for setting nails so you won't leave hammer marks on wood (heard of it as sinker or nail setter) it is a piece of steel and you hit its head with the hammer until nail is even or sunk in wood

    • @MartinJohansson-nn5dv
      @MartinJohansson-nn5dv 21 день тому

      Ventilation shall not be inside the roof, the plastic barrier you install between the rafters is just a band aid and its not solve the problem that you have condensation inside the roof.

    We had the same problem here in England with the insulation under our new tile roof, we forgot to leave an air gap and thought our whole roof was leaking. Glad you found it before you finished the roof boarding

    I also really admire your idea of using hand tools to build the cabin. I think you were going to look back on this experience and see how you’ve grown from not only your successes, but your mistakes in this endeavor. That is the true essence of growth when you can look at both and realize what you can do differently from that.

      It will allow air flow but if moisture continues to condense on the roof it will drip onto the insulation causing mold issues. Baffles are the way to go.

    •  Рік тому +2

      Just curious why they'd be necessary if the insulation is sitting about 2" below the plywood? Is there a reason why the insulation might get pushed back up against the plywood?

  • @csabarajnai7423
    @csabarajnai7423 10 місяців тому +1

    The design of the roof must be solved by stretching a vapor barrier film over the beam, which must be attached to the beam with a 2-inch-thick sheet, and care must be taken to seal the nail. The slats or in the case of the plate roof, the plywood must be attached to it, and then the plate must be screwed to it. from the attic, the insulation must be placed under the foil and no gap must be left. a vapor barrier film must be placed underneath, and then the paneling must be screwed onto it. This is the layering of the roof.

    Good thing you found the issue with the ceiling now….mold is killer. I do agree with other comments that baffles are needed for maintaining the air gap….cabins have to breath. As a woodworker with power tools, impressive to watch you rip the last floorboard with a handsaw! You will need a way to adjust and clean the solar panel….maybe a little ladder up the same pole will do? Looking forward to seeing some rustic holiday decorations in the cabin!

    •  Рік тому +1

      We'll monitor the insulation over the next year and install some baffles if needed. So far a brush on a stick has worked haha. Though this is just a temporary installation for winter. We'll build a bigger permanent solar system in the spring.

    If you want some advice mine would be to get a product like durovent or raft-r-mate for a better long term solution that you won’t have to worry about. Would of compressed the insulation a 1/2” more but prevented you from having to pad roof out with 2x4s

    Nice to see the progress on your cabin.
    Additionally to the gap you added between the insulation and the roof, I would install some sort of mesh at the very bottom to prevent animals getting anywhere near the insulation and potentially damaging it or ripping chunks out. For the power wires of the solar panel or any wire running into the cabin from above, it‘s best to have the wires droop just before they enter the cabin. That makes any water drip off the wire, hence it cannot keep running along the wire into the cabin.

    •  Рік тому +2

      Yes, mesh at the soffits is on our growing list of tasks! Not sure when we'll get to it. It seems whenever we finish one task on our list, 2 more show up haha. Excellent point about the wires!

    You may have the same condensation issue with the van because I've never seen anyone use vapor barrier in a van build. It will trap all the moisture in the walls. Everyone I've seen says it needs to breathe to dry the moisture the metal will create. How are you going to clear the snow off the solar panel with it being so high?

    •  Рік тому +2

      We had the same thoughts as well... though with the van, we made sure there was no possible way for air or moisture to get into the insulation in the first place, kind of like an unvented roof as opposed to a vented one. Let's hope it works that way haha. And we use a brush on a long stick, it's worked so far!

    I'm confused still about roof insulation. If your vapor barrier prevented inside air from touching the cold boards then where did the water come from? Or maybe some gets through?

    •  Рік тому

      There is openings at the bottom of the roof!! If your roof is fully enclosed, it might not be a problem. But that was not our case and we don’t trust our abilities to make it fully enclosed without any hole or gap, so we went the other way ;)

    Seek God and see your worth how loved you are and know who He is, read scripture. 💕
    Yeshua is the son of God who died and rose three days later and loves all of you. He took God's wrath upon Himself, that was the punishment for everyone in sin. He died for everyone and wants you with Him, to know Him and live for His glory. Come be saved eternally and spend time with Him to know Him. Attend a church and read scripture.
    Be saved, free, forgiven, healed, delivered, baptized, whole and let Him show you how He is everything you need. He alone satisfies.
    We are to live righteous and Holy because He said to and paid for our way to live like Him. Ask anything in His name and the Father will do it amen hallelujah praise God thank you Jesus .
    I lift up everyone's prayers, wants and needs to You Jesus, please pour out blessings. May Your favor and mercy be upon the world. In Jesus name come help us all. You know our needs and everything else about each of us. In Jesus name amen thank you Jesus praise God 🙏
    Jesus, Help people to be rooted and grounded in Your love and to obey Your truth. That they are living in the truth being taught by You. That they know Your voice and word. Knowing truth from errors, discernment. 💕
    We are to live ive righteous, doing the right thing always and living in obedience to scripture, every word of it.
    We are ambassadors of Christ. We represent God, when we are seen Jesus should be seen, His ways not ours. We should be living for and showing God, living for His glory. We are to be an example of Yeshua, for the world to see Him and want to know Him and know Him more. 🙏 🔥
    2 Chronicles 7:14 says, if My people humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways I will hear them from heaven and heal their land. 🙏 💖
    People need to turn from their wicked ways, Jesus paid for it. That's God stating it in that verse and there are more verses. People need to repent, to be cleansed by His blood and live Holy because He's Holy and righteous because He's righteous. Our God said to stop sinning in many many scriptures and He paid for everyone to be cleansed of sin (Isaiah 53), and to live how He said. He dwells in the Holy temple (your body) and said not to defile the temple. He said to defile the temple is death. He's always serious about everything He said to do. He's just as serious about what He said not to do.
    We live in obedience to His law, every word of it! He dwells within us all to be with and lead us in His ways. 💕🙏🔥 🕊️
    Deuteronomy 28 there are blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. The whole chapter, and verse 46 is one example of generational curses. These go into the following generations, the 3 and 4th. Our children pay the price for our sin.
    God has said to stop sinning. Scripture says how you are sending consequences to yourself and to your loved ones, children. By God's law you are. If you don't believe me ask Him, in Jesus name may you see and know the truth in its fullness. Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
    Jesus is worthy of everything He said and paid for, so I implore you to do as God said.
    Yeshua said If you love Me you will obey My commands. Love Him with all your heart, mind, soul and strength.💖🙏🕊️🔥 Praise God so Awesome!! Hallelujah Yeshua 🙏
    God loves all of you and you are worthy to Him, Yeshua died for all because God loves everyone. Come know Him, Yeshua call upon Him 💕 the world knows Him as Jesus, He answers 💕
    Thank You, Yeshua for Your obedience and love, even unto Your death You obeyed the Father 🙏 Hallelujah Praise the Lord God Almighty 💕 In Yeshua's mighty name 🙏🔥💖🕊️
    God is always faithfully Himself and so awesome. Every way He said He would be in scripture He is, every day ages and ages of Him never changing. Hallelujah Yeshua Praise the Lord God Almighty 🙏🕊️🔥💖
    Father God loves you 💕

    Hi, me again and i am looking forward to see how it go with the moisture in the roof. I am not sure the model you do now gona work. Moisture happening when cold air meet warm air. If you leave a gap with air inside the roof , there is where the air meets and you do not want this to happening inside the roof. I see Americans using some plastic barrier to collect water between the frames and there just a band aid for the real problem. Right way to do it is to do what you done from the start but have a ventilated roof on top of the moisture barrier outside the roof so you get a ventilated roof on the outside. On top of the moisture barrier on the outside, you install wooden panels vertikal so the water can go out and not stop. On the vertical wood you add wood panel horizontal where you install the metall roof. Now you get a ventilated roof on the outside. Always think, where do the cold and warm air meets there is where you get condensation.

  • @stevenm3141
    @stevenm3141 Рік тому +1

    Typically there are styrofoam baffles premade for this situation. It's called a cold roof. 2x4s are too much. The idea is to create a void between the roof and insulation ridge to header with opening at the header to the outside. And bird boxes (mesh screen)at the openings of the header.
    You two are doing just fine up to this point. You got a lot done with only modest tools! I would put you in a special category of builders. Amazing.... Even most tradesmen wouldn't do what you have done! I would bet many don't even know what a twist drill or a spokeshave is!

    Guys I'm so sorry. I felt there was something wrong when there were only 2 x 4 rafters and then no furring strips under the metal roofing for ventilation but I'm a laymen and I thought you knew something that I didn't. I wish I would have spoken up and risked being found to be a fool. But I guess by then it would have been too late anyway. Oh well, you recovered nicely.

      Don’t worry, we got very lucky in our unluckiness ahaha :) we found it early, we did it in a couple warm days (the last ones of the next few months probably) and are now happy with more knowledge and experience ;)
      Thank you tho, as always :)
