Builder Mistake Creates this Plugged Oil Filter Surprise

  • An experimental aircraft was purchased and the new owner determined it was time for an oil and filter change. A BIG surprise was found upon removing the oil filter! It appeared completely plugged and what followed was a hunt for the cause - starting with cutting the filter apart for an examination. The result directed a look at the engine installation and found a clear error by the builder of the aircraft. It would never have been found without the evidence left by the used oil filter. Watch and see if you could have made this building/installation mistake! Thi was clearly a serious problem on any aircraft.

    Wow, thanks!

Some color-coding might be useful for the connections or better yet, different size fittings to make it impossible to plumb it backwards.

Great video as usual. And a reminder to anyone wanting to use alternative oil filter part numbers, some engines like the Rotax for example use oil weights that may not work well with a different filter because approved oil filters may have an internal extra heavy bypass valve, so using a “cheaper” alternative may result in unfiltered oil running through an engine

That's crazy. To think an engineer thought yea we better put a valve here just in case the oil filter get blocked.

Did anyone think about the extra wear on the engine from running and entire oil change interval with basically unfiltered oil?

Likely more than one interval. Could have been original to the build.

Probably not an issue. The oil filter is optional on most Lycoming & Continental engines, though if it doesn't have an oil filter, the oil change interval is halved to 25 hours.

    Great info

Just curious whether or not this would have caused an abnormal reading on the oil pressure gauge.

Depends where the oil pressure sensor is located. Most auto engines have their sensor located post-oil pump. You could add a 1/8 NPT oil pressure sensor on the oil filter remote mount.
