  • The interview with Raimonds Pauls opens a new "Catherine's Dreams" author's interactive project. Who is Raimonds Pauls? What hides behind his eternal composure and reticence?

02:18 - What does time mean to Pauls?
03:25 - Is the Maestro happy?

04:52 - When and how does the unflappable Pauls get heated?
06:34 - What does the Maestro want to deny Laima Vaikule (but can't)?
    06:48 - What's on the Maestro's mind - classics, jazz, or rock-n-roll?
08:59 - Who has passed through Pauls' hands? Are they grateful?
10:51 - How does the Maestro feel about money? What are they for him?
    11:00 - Why can't Pauls watch football?
12:02 - What is infinity to Pauls?
12:39 - How did Pauls overcome a terrifying period in his life?
13:54 - What is beauty for Pauls?
14:25 - Whom does Raimonds Pauls adore?
15:16 - When does Pauls get a lump in his throat? Where is his soft spot?
16:02 - Does Maestro feel closeness to perfection?
17:05 - How sincere is Pauls?
18:08 - Who does Pauls trust?
18:53 - What is the Maestro's main weapon?
It turns out, even the Maestro has moments when he starts to lose it and even seeks revenge, and there are times when a lump forms in his throat. Sometimes everything goes according to plan, and sometimes it's all improvisation and jazz. Sometimes his irony leaves the interlocutor stunned, and there are times when he himself can't find the words not to hurt the person's feelings.
Catherine Lanskaya conducted this interview at the Chekhov Theater before the play "The Girl in the Café," where the Maestro spends the whole evening at the piano.
In the interview, Pauls says he is happy. His happiness is order in the family and at work. At that time, his beloved wife Lana was still alive, who for 55 years every morning asked the same question: will you have coffee? And never heard a "no" in response. Pauls himself has never heard "no" from his audience either - his halls are filled with listeners who always warmly welcome, sing along, and dance, and blissful smiles never leave their faces: Pauls is their youth, maturity, wisdom... "Here's my happiness," the Maestro says.
Catherine Lanskaya structured her conversation on seven keys, the riddles of eternity from the Latvian poetess Austra Skujiņa, who wrote Pauls' favorite poems. Time, space, infinity, beauty, wisdom, love, and death. It is Skujiņa who is dedicated to the musical performance "The Girl in the Café," before which Catherine spoke with the Maestro. By the way, the first publication of the poetess was the poem "Dreams" in the newspaper "Sociāldemokrāts" - a hundred years ago.
"Catherine's Dreams" is a synthesis of interview and performance genres, skillfully embodied by the author and host of the project Catherine Lanskaya. According to the creators' intention, the guest enters the "realm of dreams," and the host, like the curious and brave Alice from Wonderland, asks him questions on the brink, and sometimes beyond the bounds of reality.
The project was born on the eve of the pandemic, but for obvious reasons, it temporarily fell asleep. Today, when the whole world is rocking between insomnia and a nightmare, it has become especially important and relevant to talk about our dreams and aspirations, without which reality is meaningless.
Outstanding personalities talk about their fulfilled dreams, vulnerabilities, and plans for the future. About the most intimate, about the essence of existence and the entire universe. The heroes of the next issues will be the musicologist and educator Mikhail Kazinik and the choreographer Alla Dukhova, who also allowed us to peek into their subtle worlds of feelings, dreams, and fantasies.
