Just the video I was waiting for. Very thorough testing. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I think i'll be sticking with my standard Freak Kit now. Cheers. 🤘
I bought a freak Barrel kit when they first came out thank God I've always shot autococker. I was seriously thinking of upgrading an eighteen-year-old Barrel kit oh, now I can probably continue to carry my 18 year old barrels on the field
i thought that the big selling point of the freak xl wasnt the velocity variables but rather the benefit of a longer control bore improving the overall accuracy of the down range shot spread.

i agree with your conclusion the way it was done. but you really should have used a random assortment to account for expected results and natural on the field as well as done a precise ball size comparison. then done a minimum of 30 balls. that is statistically the minimum number to establish a normal bell curve on a graph. not suggesting it would be much different but it would give a better statistical analysis and also show natural expected variance.
I have an old angle A1 2 peace barrel kit and its the most quietest barrel I ever shot it also shoots better than my freak. I real don't understand it I will never let this barrel go its a really great barrel
@@FvD714 it's not better. Barrel kits help with consistency of velocity. Not accuracy. I use a freak XL and it's not anymore accurate than my stock barrel.
Question about this kit. Is there any difference between the AA tip (spiral) and the FR tip (strait) in accuracy and/or sound of shot? I've heard the AA tip should sound softer but havent seen anything about it in any article.
Perhaps you should try not only shooting the balls that fit perfectly to see if the XL helps with the slight variance in ball size. Either way- great video and thanks.
Great video I think you're right about not buying xl if you already have a good barrel but the xl is the best barrel on the market, I sold my whole freak kit and bought the xl and I've been using it at my local Field it's much more accurate for sure. It does not increase the distance but I already knew that was a gimmick
Thanks for putting this together Brad! I know these videos are tough, especially when you expect to see some type results and end up with a whole lot of nothing. Good job, even though I'll disagree on the best barrel kit ;)
I am trying to purchase a freak XL kit online and there two option, can someone tell me what the different between a gog freak xl kit and a small part freak xl kit?
What was the accuracy difference between the 2 because in concept a longer distance that the bore is matched the more accurate the release of the ball from the barrel.
Im curious if it's not because you're using it on a gun that is operating at low pressure. I remember back in the automag days running with a high pressure firing gun, we would look for as long a barrel without porting as we could find because you could turn down the regulator and get the same velocity. Basically, I'm wondering if your gun is already working at a low enough pressure that the extra length of barrel actually impacts negatively on the velocity??? This barrel length myth might just be an old standard for old tech! By the way, it's cool to see you all grown up Brad! I remember back in the day when I worked at Predator on Watt Avenue selling you gear haha! I heard you bought the place from Bob a while ago, pretty awesome man. Anyway great channel!
Right now there are only two barrels (that I know of) that accept the XL inserts. The freak XL barrel and the Deadlywind fibur X8. However, there are several adapters made by SSC (SuperStanchyCustoms) and Nummech that allow you to use xl inserts in a standard freak barrel. SSC has also made XL insert compatible backs for the eclipse FL barrel kit
its not more accurate, but it is more consistent, which is one of the things you need for good accuracy. You still need to shoot good paint through it to it won't be accurate, just like any other barrel
I would be curious to see how the numbers would match up against a stock barrel. Does the freak in general make a big difference or is it just subjective?
What is the correct order to put the barrel together? I just got the kit anodized from ANS. If I put the insert into the tip and screw on the back I hear a squeaking noise. However if I put the barrel together and slide the insert from the back it seems better? Anyone else have this?
#PBQT: Why is autococker considered to be more accurate than modern markers? Consistent shots are determined by spot on aiming, paint and barller. As last factor, marker has the least impact on accuracy. Are you able to aim left and hit to the right with an autococker? Why are they so highly revered?
the myth that closed bolt guns are more accurate is one of the things that made the cocker so popular. Now its just people who want to justify spending $1k on a high end cocker.
I agree about the freak xl. It just isn't good enough anymore. The original freak was revolutionary, but now that so many smaller companies are making amazing high end barrels and selling them for ridiculously low prices, the freak just isn't the king anymore.
barrels don't do much for accuracy, but the longer control bore helps with consistency, so as long as you are shooting good, round paint it will be accurate.
Underbore overbore who gives a shit just go play. I think the freak is awesome, however, on an xball field a lot of getting kills is lanes and accuracy by volume. How many times have you crawled down the snake and popped up at the 50 and shot the dorito guy across field ten times. Yea, you may have hit him on the first shot but when it comes tourney time your bonus balling the crap out of that guy. My point is for guys who don't play all the time why spend tons of money on a freak xl barrel kit for a marginal difference from the stock barrel. Well actually if you buy an axe it will be a lot better. I dont even know what Im trying to say or where I am going with this. Quite frankly, Im HAmmered. Awesome vid Brad. Your the damn man.
These videos are getting really good man. Debunking myths before they can start, well done. Help me out with this one #PBQT Do auto-cockers really shoot farther/more accurately than other markers, and if so how is that possible?
You make some great videos PBRML! I've watched so many now. I know you get tons of questions... But, would it be better to get an Eclipse Barrel with inserts, or the Freak kit itself?
@Paintball Ruined My Life So can you help me out bro? I'm in deep. I'm looking for that barrel upgrade for my Cronus. As the only upgrade available... I want to go all out. I really like the Apex 2 and I NOTICED that you have yet to do a review (hint hint)... but wait... Will the freak XL inserts even work on an Apex 2?... wait... Will the Apex 2 even work on the Cronus?! How many barrels do the freak XLs actually work in right now? I guess since you said the differences are minute I could just get the old inserts for the Apex. ... but do you think it's worth getting the XLs for any future products? ... also do I really need EVERY bore available? I see individual ones for sale... Would it be so terrible to only buy one size?
Xl inserts only work in freak xl barrels and the dealywind x8 . The apex does not take any kind of inserts. Freak barrels (including the deadlywind fibur x/x8) do not fit the cronus. Apex is fun to mess around with occasionally, but I wouldn't use it as my main barrel. The best barrels for the cronus are the CP one pice, the J&J ceramic, and the deadlywind null barrel. As for bore size, you should be fine getting a .685 or .688.
This isn't new at all. This whole 8 inch thing goes WAY back. Tom Kaye of Airgun Designs did A LOT of testing alongside Bud Orr of WGP back in the 90s on these sorts of things. Bud Orr discovered that when using CO2, the paintball reaches maximum velocity in about 3.5 inches of barrel length. At that time, the ball is moving faster than the speed at which the CO2 can expand. But, Tom Kaye discovered that Nitrogen or compressed air acts very differently, and accelerates the ball at a slower rate. He found that it takes the ball 8 inches of barrel length to accelerate to full velocity using these gases. So any control bore longer than 8 inches on a compressed air powered gun simply causes drag and reduces efficiency. So the Freak XL is ideal in most cases, as the ball no longer drags against the barrel after it passes the 8 inch insert. For CO2 powered guns, the standard 6 inch Freak kit is ideal, as you'll only have 2.5 inches of drag after acceleration is completed. All of this can be found with some deep googling. Tom Kaye's research can be found archived on Automags dot Org titled "Tom's Tech Tips". Most of this "new" paintball science is old stuff discovered by the original movers and shakers of the sport.
