  • There can be few United players, or footballers in general, that have had such a meteoric rise than Norman Whiteside.
Physically well-developed, with a superb football brain, the youngster from Northern Ireland was breaking English club records and World Cup records alike with his feats, and soon became many Reds, Northern Irish and my personal hero!
The sad thing is that it was all over by the time he was just 26 years of age...
...If you remember or know of 'Big Norm', relive the memories of his playing days with me now or if he's new to you, discover what footballing dreams are made of.
As always, a big thank you goes out to Darko Naumcheski and his superb Facebook site: Manchester United | Recollection of the Past, which you can access using this link: / 2490223344526555

force of nature with such a passion for the game, so sad he had to retire so young. Def not Big Dunc but certainly cut from the same mould.

Big game player, can't believe that he played for basically a decade before being forced to quit at just 26...crazy

Great job on McMahon. I shouldn't condone that but it was retaliation for his teammates. The games was brutal back then.

He'd been doing it all match apparently and Big Norm was being the enforcer, and it worked.

That's why I love him, Sparky and Robbo, never flinched, always put it about, never disappointed.
And, former United captain George Graham, you mean ;)

Big norm knew where the net was very skillfull for a big guy. Those days players seemed to have big thighs etc and were very tough I once asked Roger palmer what was his diet back in that era he said steak and Guinness bet these boys were on the same diet magrath Robson whiteside for sure.

Nice1. I think though that Big Norm was a man-child even before he crossed the Irish Sea. Like Big Dunc, they were both naturally well-developed for their age and compete with fully-grown men from 16 years of age.

A man mountain, it may be sacrilege but the closest I've seen to Dunc in my time. Ruined by the drink sadly.
