Mr Brian... you have changed my life.... thank you ! I’ve been playing guitar for about 20 years. I have written about 75 songs and played about 500 gigs. I iHome about the circle of fifths a few years ago. I looked at the chart, watched some videos, went to the ice cream stand to eat my feelings away and thinking that I’d never be able to learn any of this. YOU HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE. Holy crap, Brian! I started playing guitar, by ear, when I was 10. I’ve struggled for years trying to figure out the chord patterns. I’m now 66. This “circle of 5ths” is like someone just turned on the light and unlocked the secrets I’ve been searching for. You’ve inspired me to dust off the ‘ol axe and make my fingers hurt again… and I can’t wait! Thank you sir for keeping this video simple enough for an old dog like me to “get it”.
Grumpus on fire, your so right. I'm 64 and bam! Brian's video got through my thick scull. Everything has been going in one ear and out the other till I saw Brians video. I went straight over after the video and signed up on his website. I'm excited to finally learn some theory!
I tried this last night on two songs I already know how to play, and it nailed the key, chords, and out-of-key chords for both. I feel like I’ve been handed the keys to the kingdom of guitar knowledge-THANK YOU! There’s now a printout of the circle of fifths hanging on the wall where I play.

Oh my days! This video is a PEACH! Jam-packed with golden nuggets. The first at 7:11 Pentatonic pinky = major key and first finger = minor key? My jaw dropped. NO ONE has EVER told me that, and I know a lot of musicians and have watch a gazillion video tutorials. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Brian Kelly, for ALL of this! xxxxxxx
This was outstanding. I learned two new levels of looking at the circle of fifths. I am a late beginner on the piano. Great share, thanks. PS I notice other people talking up your circle of fifths discussion, in comments below - really great.
This was the best explanation of the circle of fifths, pentatonic positions for major and minor scales, borrowing chords, and learning songs, that I have ever heard. It clears up a lot of things for me that were a little fuzzy until now. Thanks for sharing this info Brian!
Take this to heart - you have just changed my life for the better with this one video. People always say, “if I can just help one person then it was all worth it.” READ THIS: you didn’t just “help one person” with this video. You have literally changed my life and I will forever be grateful for what you’ve done here! I have been playing guitar since I was 16. I’m 44. This is THE MOST IMPORTANT UA-cam VIDEO I HAVE EVER WATCHED!!!! This is THE MOST IMPORTANT GUITAR LESSON I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! Period. This video is life! So clear, so simple, so plain to understand. You just took boring, sometimes complicated guitar theory - and made it look like a paint-by-numbers coloring book. I’m now a subscriber, and if the rest of your videos are this awesome, I might just buy your guitar course. Anyone can teach guitar. It takes a special talent to teach it in a way that makes it simple and memorable. You, sir, are amazing. Btw, that’s a lot coming from me because I can be a pretty harsh critic. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Agreed...I have been playing guitar since 1986, the 7th grade, I am 45!!! Greatest lesson ever on UA-cam regarding the circle of fifths and understanding the framework of how the music is working...GREAT WORK...CLEAR, CONCISE, AND AMAZING!!!
Fact. Best on YT. This is not opinion. The others either hold important concepts back so you pay them or they just don't understand what Brian Kelly gives you for free.
everytime i watch one his videos he breaks something down in a way that simply makes sense. he gives you practical theory. trying to pick up songs using the root note is note enough. that pentatonic trick is golden.
I’ve only been playing a couple of years, still have LOTS to learn and thought I’d be lost, but thanks to having built a solid foundation with a great teacher, this video made perfect sense. I can’t wait to check out your other lessons!
I do not make a lot of comments on youtube but I must say this guy is an exceptional teacher the lesson is perfect and a must for anyone learning guitar. My personal thanks. Keep it up Brian!!!!!
That tip about how to find the key using the pentatoinc scale really helped me with a skill Ive struggled with for such a long timwe. Thanks man, I really appreciate how clear your explanations are.
I'm coming back to this after having learnt a lot more from various sources. I have to say, your delivery style is just so good. You stay to the point when so many people go off on little musical tangents. You move at a good pace. And it's all just really simple raw quality. Awesome job man.
"We'll get to the swag part later, for now we'll just focus on the notes." This is such a good video. Every step has a good and comprehensive explanation.
This has taught me so much more than any other resource on the internet. I'm sure there were a lot of stepping stones along the way that brought me to a place where I was able to understand your video but I just need you to know that your teaching style is the absolute best I've seen on the entire internet.
Great lesson Brian, and I have to say I’ve watched most of your lessons now on YT. The quality of your teaching is spot on, and the way you approach each subject on guitar is excellent. There’s a lot of stuff on here that people just skip through because it doesn’t get to the point and it becomes boring. The way you explain things is brilliant for the guitar players out there who are learning the instrument, respect my friend and keep these brilliant vids coming, hope you and your family have a great holiday 👍 🏴🏴🏴
I've been playing guitar for 40 years and this is absolutely the BEST breakdown I've ever heard. I've always struggled to figure out key and chord progression and this is just outstanding. Thank you!!!
Best chord progression / key identifying process explanation I found till now on UA-cam for a beginner as myself ! Thank you sooo much Brian! Subscribed!!!
I’ve had a year with my guitar but only recently I’ve been truly learning chords, switching between chords, strumming patterns, all these things and with this, its going to be another major leap in my learning.. thank you!!
After reading all the comments, I’m going to comment too. I totally agree with everyone. GREAT video! I can’t believe I haven’t come across such a great explanation of figuring out songs quickly. thanks for your great teaching
Ok seriously that is AWESOME 😎 every guitarist should hear this. You will never struggle to get a song down again. Bro you really laid this out so perfectly. Thank you.
My man I’m just starting out playing I have only learned DGE CHORDS but with your explanation on 421 chord progression it just opened up a new sound for me thank for what you do ! Keep doing you

I’ve been tab’ing guitar for over 20 years and this is by far the best music lesson I’ve ever gotten! A key (no punt intended) to unlock every guitar players fundamental knowledge! Wish I had learned this 20 years ago. Thx man!
This video is one of the best explanations I've had on playing and I greatly appreciate you sir. I'm glad it's not just me that's been playing almost 40 years and feels the same way about this tutorial. I've been in a slump for the last few months. This has got me going. Thanks
This is the 2nd video of yours that I've watched and I am totally blown away. I've spent 3 years piecing lessons together to become a half assed guitar player that now knows the fretboard, scales, caged system, etc, etc. This video and your 8wks to solo has brought everything together in one evening. You're the best teacher on YT to bump my guitar journey to the next level. Keep up the awesome work!
Great lesson! I’ll watch it over and over, especially the order of the chords within the Key signature, borrowing parallel chords etc. Lots of great information but so much more understandable! Thanks Brian!
Wow, I’ve been playing for about a year now and I don’t know much about music theory and that kinda stuff and I thought I wasn’t going to understand any of this but it was pretty clear. You’re great teacher. Definitely going to take a look at more of your videos.
Once again Brian, a clear concise video that is full of amazing tips. I will definitely be saving this for future reference. For now thanks for clearing in my mind the whole 'borrowing from parallel keys' thing. It was one thing that confused me up to this point. Keep on keeping on. You're doing some great work 😀
Thank you very much!!! Great lesson. I never really know wtf I'm playing when i learn new solos or things... it's nice to see a more comprehensive approach to music explained in a very easy way. Loved it 💚
Watched a few of your videos and all of them helped me understand this stuff. Just probably the best and easiest style of teaching music theory. Awesome!
I have never been so intensely focussed on any UA-cam tutorial. An absolute perfect combination of information, explanation and demonstration! Thank You for sharing your knowledge. And a Special THANK YOU for all the hard work and time spent on creating this tutorial. 30 years strumming and humming and I am in awe, over the amount of information simplified in a 30 minute video! Brilliant!
9 years man. I Started playing in 2011. I went for guitar classes, learned thousands of tabs. Asked questions, scoured the internet and finally someone explains it. The circle of 5ths, frickin pentatonic use. All these years of being insecure. Im still a little resistant because my mind is now set in that pattern, but you sir have changed my life with this video. 9 years man and all I can do is just play a few songs I learnt off off licklibrary tutorials or tabs. Now I know how to start playing by ear finally. God bless you
Hey fella you explain it how it should be explained , i love watching your lessons straight talking to the point and this G pentatonic scale is just great, the way you showed us how to move it around to find where you should be is brilliant, keep these lessons coming because i know lots of guys who would and will benefit from your learning, i will spread the word man, thanks again, Steve from liverpool England👍
I've had so many people (including my older sibling who went to college for music and has studied ALOT of music theory) try to explain this to me. Actually seeing the picture and hearing what he was talking about helped so much. He's a great teacher and this finally all clicked inside my head :)
Absolutely outstanding lesson - have been trying to figure out the circle of fifths for years and this is the most straightforward explanation I’ve ever encountered!
Brian, I have some learning disability’s but thru repetition and your inspiring teaching you have given me a great leap into the study of guitar 🎸 and the understanding of music 🎵
Hi Brian, this is the No.1 video anyone learning to play guitar by ear should watch. Holy cow! You’ve just unravelled something I’ve been struggling with for over 20 years. I liked and subscribed. Thanks you!!!
Dude, you have just opened a new box for me in the music theory world! Thank you so much. I've been playing since I was 12, I'm now 34. I've ignore most theory because I've found it either too advanced or boring. This made sense!
Awesome lesson man! I've came back to this lesson a few times and I understand it better each time. The pinky determines the major, fore the minor, genius.
Your an amazing teacher , glad I stumbled to this channel . I've learned alot in the shortest time over the years I've been trying to figure out what I was doing . Thank you
I just started a lil over two weeks ago and on a basic level this makes sense. I have to revisit this after I understand key, pentatonic scale, and chords a little better, but man this seems like it makes so much sense. I just signed up to your website.
mine was worse. he'd sit and play all the cool stuff he knew and then would assign me songs like twinkle, twinkle out of a mel bay book. this was many moons ago when I was fifteen. it turned me off to wanting to learn how to play.
no one can actually teach you guitar though... they will suggest stuff and tell you stuff but to be a guitarist there's no payment plan, easy fix, trapper keeper magick... you simply have to put the guitar in your hands and push those strings onto the fretboard and strum... keep doing that until you like what you hear. you're going to have to do this procedure every day for months to build grey matter in your brain. After a good 3 months of this painful and boring process you will be ready to actually attempt to learn actual songs. Sometimes you're going to feel like it's too difficult... how can someone put this finger there then there then back in seconds when you can't even get 1 finger in one spot without touching the other string... you'll probably get so pissed off and annoyed you'd rather just give up... put the guitar in the closet and not even think about it for awhile. And that's a good feeling because that means you can actually improve something in your life and that right there is your goal... YOUR OWN MIND. Prove to yourself that you can do it no matter what... and keep at it... take a small break, get away from it ... then before bed put in another 15 minutes to get just a few steps down before putting it up 'til morning. then when you wake up put a small 5 - 10 minutes to REMIND your muscle memory... then set it down again and forget about it. pick it up again after a few hours. This is the process of building grey matter in your brain... habitual actions. Once you can do it without thinking... you've pretty much IMPROVED YOU... your mind, body, confidence... everything really. You actually can admit to yourself truthfully that you were successful at something. And that's the no.1 reason why most people still pick up a guitar when there's no real reason. GOOD LUCK
Auston Smith I know how to play guitar now. I didn’t need a teacher to teach me basic songs. What I needed is someone to teach me theory. I’ve been an intermediate player for like 10 years. I play off and on. I don’t understand how to play anything other than tabs off the internet with chords. I was basically getting at lessons are scams.
@@karliegilbert3917 I just focused on my drums and became good. I dabble in guitar today, but I've always had a natural inclination toward the drums rather than six strings.
@@austonsmith536 damn. That was amazingly well put. I'm approaching 4 months in rn and I do a minimum of 2hrs a day and sometimes up to 5 or 6. I just love the improvements I see. And I always pick it up once more before bed to see if I remember what I went over earlier in the day.
This is just such a great and very clear explanation of something I've always been mystified by. Quite inspiring actually, so thanks Brian, thanks a lot.
This is the best lesson i’ve ever seen. Been looking for this info, and he puts it across real simple. Im starting to get it now after a year of playing 😁cheers bud
After learning how to play guitar 55 years ago by watching my brother, I finally have an actual use for the circle of fifths. Woo Hoo! Best guitar learning video that I have seen. Many thanks.
Thank you Brian! This is such a valuable lesson. I wish somebody would have taught me this years ago. You came along at just the right time, for sure. Extremely well done. I'll be back for more.
That is literally the best and most usefull guitar tutorial ever made. Thank you man! It makes me so happy to be able to find out how to play a song by ear, I've struggled with it for years
I've never made a comment on youtube before, however after coming across this video I felt I needed to say something. I've been playing guitar by ear for 30 Years now, never read music on guitar, played along to my favourite metal/rock records etc. I'm now just beginning to play acoustic and trying to sing and play a few songs which I've never done before and feel like I'm starting from scratch again, which is ok by me i'm enjoying it. Brian thank you so much for uploading this video, I have learned so much in one half hour than I have in 30 years!! Never heard of the circle of fifths thing before, and you make it so concise and clear and simple, brilliant stuff, thanks man. Like I'm thinking wow can it be that simple?? Looking forward to learning this stuff now, thanking you again. Thin Lizzy forever...

God bless you
His videos are eye-opening
and there I was thinking the circle of fifths was Tom Cruze and his naked wife with those Batshit scary new world order people in masks. never mind
Glad to hear it! 😁
Really great lesson, the fret board is finally making sense to me! Thankyou
The most helpful lesson I have ever watched. Many thanks
Thanks for an amazing lesson, not many teachers can teach complex concepts so well.
Absolutely outstanding lesson - have been trying to figure out the circle of fifths for years and this is the most straightforward explanation I’ve ever encountered!
Excellent breakdown, after all these years I may actually learn how to play a guitar. Thanks!
Great video again Brian ..... compliments on the improved video and sound quality ... awesome mister!!
This is the best understandable explanation of the use of a circle of fifths absolutely great video
Hey glad to hear it helped for ya. Thanks for checkin out the site! 😀
So how is it going after 6 months?
This honestly feels like when a magician reveals a long guarded trick to you, and so simply changes everything. Amazing video. Thank you!
Thank you, Brian. Your guitar lessons are so helpful. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks man - great lesson!! For the first time (in my 35 year guitar history) I understand more of the value of "circle of fiths"
One of the best lessons I have ever seen. Now get why the circle of 5ths is so important
Thanks for your great work was such a revelation for me.
My guitar teacher was shit. All they did was print out tabs which I can do. No music theory nothing.
mine was worse. he'd sit and play all the cool stuff he knew and then would assign me songs like twinkle, twinkle out of a mel bay book. this was many moons ago when I was fifteen. it turned me off to wanting to learn how to play.
no one can actually teach you guitar though... they will suggest stuff and tell you stuff but to be a guitarist there's no payment plan, easy fix, trapper keeper magick... you simply have to put the guitar in your hands and push those strings onto the fretboard and strum... keep doing that until you like what you hear. you're going to have to do this procedure every day for months to build grey matter in your brain.
You are absolutely the best teacher on youtube! And you give it for free... that's an honor to learn from you.
Glad to hear it Paul! Thanks for checking out the vid 😀
After learning how to play guitar 55 years ago by watching my brother, I finally have an actual use for the circle of fifths. Woo Hoo! Best guitar learning video that I have seen. Many thanks.
Thank you Brian! This is such a valuable lesson. I wish somebody would have
taught me this years ago.
I've been playing guitar by ear for
30 Years now, never read music on guitar, played along to my favourite metal/rock records etc. I'm now just beginning to play acoustic and trying to sing and play a few songs
which I've never done before and feel like I'm starting from scratch again, which is ok by me i'm enjoying it. Brian thank you so much for uploading this video, I have learned so much in one
half hour than I have in 30 years!! Never heard of the circle of fifths thing before, and you make it so concise and clear and simple, brilliant stuff, thanks man. Like I'm thinking wow can it be that
simple?? Looking forward to learning this stuff now, thanking you again. Thin Lizzy forever...
If i'd learned this from such a good teacher years ago I would still be playing.
The only teacher who could made it easy to understand without bullshitting
Thank You!!!
