I honestly really like the song. I was really worried about the whole virtual idol thing but now I’m not AS concerned as before. I think overall tho they are really good!!

Actually That AI thing is also part of their marketing strategy, and helps to promote their app (maybe) and it targets us, and that means we also have a certain ai versions.

If anyone is still confused, there are not member exclusively AI, the members just have an avatar that will work like "an assistant" to them, encouraging the members etc, and they can be featured in content for the internet, like in social media, these types of stuff. Apparently, SM will create a virtual world/platform called Synk for the avatars "to live in". Lee Sooman said that there is a possibility for them to perform as well, i think it will be a special performance version of the songs, or a live performance with AI in their concerts. But there aren't virtual members to add to the group, they're just the member's avatars.
I was really worried the AI concept was gonna overpower the song and the members, but it wasn't the case at all! I really liked their debut, it's got the girl crush trend but with the SM flavour to it and to me it was stellar! I'm not the biggest fan of this girl crush concept, but in some ways the SM touch "softened" a bit and added a more "classy" vibe to the trope. I'm really excited for the promotions and the next comeback!

I want them to be able to take over for the idols when they need breaks for physical reasons :( I am just so glad that so many members are now taking hiatus for personal reasons and I hope that it's not a cover up of the company for any disputes they have or trouble with other members though I fear

The "virtual idol" thingy probably will have an application of its own and will tell their story and expand their lore, where fans can interact with their idols.
SM says they will learn multiple languages so they can talk to international fans, they also say they won't be edited, that may be a bad idea, the AI's learn from the questions they get asked, Microsoft had to take one offline after it went full on Nazi and was going Skynet on humans, because everyone using it trolled it with sexist and racist questions!

Whoever told you that this was going to be a group with half of the members being real and half virtual clearly did not know what they were talking about. The same goes for Aespa's virtual characters being like Hatsune Miku. It was pretty clear as soon as the group was introduced that the virtual avatars were simply going to be CGI representations of the members; characters that were going to hang around the group as a marketing gimmick and as a way to make the group appear futuristic and keeping in step with the times.
sorry, i don't want to drag them, but they were kind of irresponsible doing that video dragging æspa do early without searching himself about the concept and checking out reliable sources. that comment section is filled with hate and confusion, i think they should've waited to talk about them or get their facts straight before doing that video.

I think the money burning scene is showing the Black Mamba trying to control Karina and showing her for a split second she could have all that if she gives in. There’s a bunch of interesting theories on twt, but it’s also a given that Black Mamba is a threat to their world and is the reason why the girls are having a hard time SYNKing with their aes.

I think aespa is gonna take the route of continuing the story. Like I think that the AI versions on them are gonna be more involved in the music video as they go one like missions. That’s what I think the last scene was.

Was it the most unique song in my opinion? No however that doesn’t change the fact it was so mind blowingly well done, for me personally I’m more focussed of the comeback as a whole, dance, video visuals and song.
i dont wanna come for opinion... cause i love open discussions but idk why people want "unique" songs all the time. @@randomkid4783 to give my personal feelings on the discussion - personally I don't need every song to be unique in every way, I do appreciate a song that a bit status quo but is well done. It's just that when a song sounds too much like something you've heard 100 times before it can get a bit stale and for some people that takes away from the enjoyment of the song. I think they could have taken this style and this concept and added a unique flair to it so that it still sounds fresh and not overdone. I think it's the same effect as when a song is overplayed. When you hear something so many times it takes away from the enjoyment.
And as a side note I think people expect big companies to put out music that is in some ways innovative and unique. Blackpink, itzy, twice, and red velvet have all been putting out stuff that starts trends and puts a unique flair on more overdone genres and sounds.
It's nice that the audio from the headphones is so loud that we can low-key hear the song too🤪🤪
The "money flex" scene with Karina in the snake queen look from what ive gathered is the Black Mamba (which is a virus/villain for their universe) trying to infect Karina and its what after that scene the train is covered in sludge and their looks changed to the black and neon green/yellow.
that's why people shouldn't start bashing a concept/a group before their debut, you don't know how things are going to turn out and you can end up creating an unreasonable sense of fear that will lead to hate against the group/the concept. making hurried assumptions and judgments is super dangerous, but i guess people thought the amount of views, likes and clout they'd get dragging æspa before their debut were worth the risk of being wrong and unethical.

This debut did its job at the end of the day...it got people talking! The girls seem to have a lot of potential, so I’m very much looking forward to their journey as a group.

They seem like a great group with tons of potential. Im excited to see whats gonna happen when SM starts getting experimental with them since we all know SM loves throwing some unique songs into the mix for all their groups (which is what makes them so interesting imo)

Bruh why is everyone talking about how "Karina" is blah blah I didn't feel like they were forcing Karina all the time in the mv at all considering how I was actually expecting that and the fact that I've seen SM do the group members much more dirtier than this....This is actually really fair, Karina was being promoted a lot before the debut and she is the center of the group but y'all are acting like you never got to see the other members or hear their voice while that was NOT like that AT ALL

Agreed, although Karina did get the most center time, it wasn't more than any normal group's center. And the two major vocalists got more lines than her. It was very fair.
The choreography of the chorus reminds me of SNSD The boys, I feel aespa is like a mix of FX and SNSD, with the concept of EXO, do you understand what I mean ?, EXO in their concept debut came from planet EXO and have super powers, while the concept of aespa is avatar and lives in kwangya, I Seeing that Giselle is similar to Jung Krystal (in mv fx rum pum pum look at krystal, and look at giselle they really look alike), it's not surprising if they are similar, because SM ENT will definitely look for members who are similar to their predecessors visually,

I think they would maintain the Avatars for a later comeback since what I understand from the lyrics is that they used to interact with their virtual counterpart, but it's been a while since they contacted them.
This makes sense with the vanishing mirror scenes (as if the avatars have disappeared) and that computer scene where it looks like she is looking for something (or someone) on the internet.
Black Mamba could be just an introduction for the virtual stuff and the virtual lore of the group.

Dislike is a strong word. I'll say it's not their cup of tea due to personal musical preference. I myself ain't fond of the song and won't probably listen to it often, but i can see it objectively as a great track for people who loves this specific genre.

@@MC-rj4ex I think that is one of the unfortunate things about Kpop culture, actually. We are expected to at least try and like a song. We should feel free to be uninterested in music, even if its popular or well liked by others. If you don't end up liking it, that's great. At the very least it means you have your own taste that isnt affected by others opinions

I just think everyone was too quick to form an opinion and make it a fact which caused a lot of confusion leading up to debut. Regarding their debut I think its good! could be better but it's smart. These days people like the "underdog" and by that I mean in terms of trajectory the only way is up for them which is better than coming in strong and then being disappointed with the next comeback. I do think we should all calm down a bit because this whole debut has really shown the ugly side of Kpop. The amount of reactions I have seen where people have had to put out disclaimers is ridiculous. Commenting about another group is not a negative thing unless you say it in a negative way.

@@camille6423 thanks! I just think Kpop has gotten so reactionary as the smallest bit of info anyone puts out warrants people going wild with speculations. Like sometimes its funny but in this case its just been really damaging and just very upsetting to watch! We've got to remember at the core of this is four girls, the oldest being 20 who have JUST started their career.

Exactly I'm seeing people complain about how they expected better and straight up calling their debut bad like they obviously worked hard to get where they are so just appreciate it even if you didn't like it yk? People are honestly just hating because they're worried about how successful a new sm gg will be. It's happened to all the SM artists when they debut, SNSD, EXO, RV, NCT etc, all got crazy hate when they debuted and they all later went on to become some of the biggest acts in Kpop today. It's a trend I see with the public & SM, they always have a ton of hate in the beginning because people don't want to admit the new group is talented, they always make dumb claims about the groups not meeting expectations and stuff honestly, it's just dumb. These girls are gonna become major in the 4th gen of kpop, it's obvious considering all the attention they've been getting around this debut, I personally can't wait to see where they go.
The song grew on me. I honestly like it now. They’re performance is top notch too. They’re all talented as well.
The song is a bit one toned I wish there was more variety and they kept the dark black scene for longer. It's kinda random that they just did that for 3 secs and the song didn't even change after that pause. I can't wait to see the full choreo cause in the MV it looks like they focused a lot on just that one drop move

Have you seen "From Home" by NCT music video? They also have that seconds which we can only see in their MV and not really part of the song. I think SM is developing a new style in their mvs where they can elaborate and expand the meaning or the storyline of the song. It's just an SM thing, always trying to make something new

Alright, I'll try to summarize it as briefly as possible.
Lee Soo-man back in 2016 talked about SM's new path they want to take and that is called New Culture Technology (Abbreviation is NCT, same as for the group Neo Culture Technology). Basically he said he considered their whole work with SM since the beginning as Culture Technology, therefore CT.
This year in March and later than last month he completely kind of forgot about anything with New Culture Technology (I guess because many things of that did not work at all and even NCT did not follow the concept, which he announced before their debut, but that is another long story) and introduced that he wanted to transform Culture Technology to Culture Universe.
First step of this Culture Universe is this new girl group æspa, which has regular members and ae-members, which are basically the virtual version of themselves.
Here comes the thing.
ae-members were born in their own world. The world is virtual world. As everybody can assume those regular members were born in our real world. But there is special "in-between space" called digital world, where all of them can meet up.
And here is the other thing, which you mentioned in your podcast about sasaeng.
Part of this Culture Universe are fans and their chance to join this digital world to interact and basically live with their idols. There is said our ae-version is also born in the virtual world and we will meet also in the digital world as regular/real æspa members, but I guess you know, you will create your character like in a game...
Before I get to the part, how I see this whole thing about sasaengs not being able to distinguish the difference between real and virtual idol, I want to explain how the group should work.
So the group itself will make songs and discography in general as normal group. No vocaloids, no "all 8 of them singing together" or anything. Those virtual members can just be seen in music videos and beside that they can interact through mobile app in the digital world. But Lee Soo-man said they would promote separately. Real members as any other group in K-Pop and ae-members in virtual world and that is funny. I mean, yeah we might get some animated live stage, but as he said, we cannot go into their virtual world, we can meet up in the digital world, so I guess SM can say something like: "Yeah, they are promoting their a lot! We are not just able to see that...".
After all of this to explain one last thing.
The abbreviation, which is so similar to Marvel Cinematic Universe, SMCU (SM Culture Universe) is this whole SM digital world thing. Just Culture Universe is like evolution of their Culture Technology in general, but this SMCU is this thing, which starts with æspa and their virtual members meeting up in digital world also with other people like fans.
Some fans on the internet say "now it will be like in MCU, where all movies are connected, so each music video of any SM's idol will be connected to each other", but nothing like this was said. I will continue rather here to separate my opinion from the explanation.
I did not feel unsure about if it will be vocaloids or not, because they said not. Also I was not unsure about the app digital thing. As you said. It will be just some bonus content. Yes, it is kind of fake projection of "you can be with the idol", but those fanatics fans don't think right anyway, so it doesn't really matter, how they will accept that. What more even whole concept of idols can be fake that it is different person as a idol, which was made by the company, and as a human being, which is also a thing, which not only sasaengs sometimes don't see.
The only thing, which could be really weird, if those fanatics will not be able to realize they spend time with virtual avatar/member, not literally with the real idol/human.
From the perspective of music video production and song.
It is a huge flex, but flex in way as for example WayV - Moonwalk, not as SuperM, where it is kind of shouting to us "hey, we have a fucking lot of money and we are god damn rich". Here it is "hidden" in the whole production, scenes, camera work and animation.
Music itself is my thing, I like it. I don't really listen to Red Velvet songs. I used to listen to some of f(x), when I got into Kpop, but not anymore and yeah I like some SNSD songs, but again, as you said, this is not something, what SM has done, so from this point it has a fresh feeling for me.
Just one thought for the end.
I am not saying this is female version of NCT. But back in 2016 during SM's conference about NCT as the "movement" and also group, I was thinking there might be in future new girl group, which will follow the music or in general production style.
And this is exactly how I imagined that!
So it is not like female unit/version of NCT, but it is the girl group of New Culture Technology if Lee Soo-man still would have considered New Culture Technology as a current thing.
And funny theory of mine and after that this big comment will end.
Lee Soo-man has never done some unusual concept for a girl group. We had here Super Junior 05, where every year one member was meant to be replaced and then it was changed to just Super Junior with KyuHyun. After regular group SHINee we had EXO, which was separated into two subgroups EXO-K/M according to the language versions and after all we had NCT, which should have been a combination of Super Junior 05 and EXO concept, but went wrong/different way.
So I would rather expect some unusual concept for a boy group again and for girl group just simple one. But after NCT not making that much huge boom as EXO did or in general after many many fans did not understand NCT concept and that made NCT hard to follow a stand, new boy group would not be a clever move, because many people might not like it.
So my theory is, since last year were announced both new boy group and girl group (what more every 4 years SM has a new boy group...) this concept might have been for a new boy group, but it was easier to not keep their word with boy group, because of what I mentioned, and also use the situation of long waiting for a new girl group and made æspa as we have it now and if it is popular the new boy group will follow this concept, maybe just not this year yet, but maybe soon.
One fact to support my theory is, many girls from SM Rookies left SM lately. I mean some of them not recently as Hina (who is half Japanese half Korean and Giselle from æspa is Japanese member, who trained not even for a year...), but those others left also in some time, in which this concept was probably already in a game and those girls were worried about this unusual thing and concept, so they rather left.

The virtual idols will have their own activities and probably interact with the fans through sns or smth. I'm really concerned that the fans/audience may start seeing the girls as avatars and not human beings (which is kind of a problem already in Kpop) and start imposing higher standarts on them & other idols. My one issue with this song is it feels like any girl group from the last four years or so could have performed it. One thing I love about SM debuts and SM groups is even if their songs aren’t perfect, they’re ambitious and they represent how the group is different. No other group could perform Happiness, no other group could perform The 7th Sense, no other group could perform Into The New World.
For me, it was the first time SM played safe on a debut song! Maybe they have foreseen that people will not like their concept at first so they wanted a "safe" song on their debut.
They want a safe song that will slowly introduce their lore and when the lore is complete, they will give hard hitting song. I am not expecting them to play safe on debut, but I expected them to release a debut song that will match the pace of their storytelling aspect, which for me is effective as it may not be an explosive song, but enticed me to learn more about them.
I feel like AI versions of idols could be helpful. Fans always demand “content” when they haven’t seen or heard from their idols in the last 24 hours, forgetting that the “content” (photo shoots, MVs, EPs, LPs, reality shows, variety shows, selfies, streams, etc.) are *labor* - not just for the idols, but their managers, stylists, songwriters, producers, and so on. Plus, people put their happiness onto idols, which is a lot of pressure on one person to be coming from so many people across the world, so having something to stand in could give them necessary mental, emotional, and physical breaks from demands that are truly, even if unintentionally so, inhumane.
My issue is the sexualization of the AIs. I expected it to be antis & creepy fans w/boundary issues that would manipulate the AIs’ images - but SM’s own design has them shaped curvier than the idols naturally appear and they are wearing more revealing clothing. That’s a conscious decision and I’m wondering who that decision is being made for and if it will encourage sexual manipulation of the images. It may not have bothered me if they weren’t so young and new, but as they are, I really hope SM redesigns them before it gets out of hand.

I'm surprised you didn't think about Exo! Mostly when you talked about the possible story line aspect, like, Exo is the group with the most impressive background story after all, and they're in the same agency. So yeah, I'm surprised you haven't noticed how many similar aspects aespa has with Exo! I thought about it already from the teasers, then the mv confirmed it. I still don't know for sure, but I saw lots of people agreeing with me that both their story line might join at some point. For many reasons, which I'm way too lazy to explain out rn haha.
Honestly the only thought I had about the A.I situation before this debut is that people were very quick to judge the concept before the group had even debuted, it's like people bashing a movie when they've only watched the trailer, I don't think it's fair ! After seeing the debut, I think that as you said, the A.I thing can be a fun addition to the group, maybe it will play a role in some sort of story line :) As for the debut, not a big fan of the chorus, but other than that I thought it was incredible, their vocals are amazing, the choreo looks impactful, the MV and styling are a 10/10 for me, and obviously the members are drop dead gorgeous !

There are also issues where some people are saying that aespa is sort of sampling/copying this and that girl crush group when i feel like this girl crush thing have this kind of generic sound and movements regarding the overall sound, choreo and style, and bcs sm never rlly have such girl crush group before and now people are paying attention to them, that's why people feel like it's the sound they used to listen and some parts of the choreo that they've seen from others, bcs when sm does it, a lot of people paid attention to it, they sort of highlighting the girl crush concept even more and it suddenly looks common? when it actually has been done by many other girl crush group before, some things do looks similar but it is actually not, idk how to say it but it's like things that are within the same category? and people tend to compare. About the AI thing, there's more negative feedback than the positive one but yeah it all depends on the execution so we will see how they will make use of that AI thing and judge for later. I'm anticipating this group since it's the first sm girl group with huge girl crush concept and sm artists usually will hit even bigger with their comeback, so i'm anticipating what kind of sound they will bring out next. So far, i would say this is a good debut overall, the song is not the best but it's not bad either, it's still decent and catchy though. Vocals and dance, they've nailed it. They broke records for being the most viewed debut mv too, so i'm sure they did well with their debut.

Aespa looks like they will become really successful. good for them and SM cause it has been a while since they produced a Popular group since RV in 2014. Especially a gg, and let’s be honest here, RV was kinda a little behind Twice and BP. SM dominated the scene for gg before when SNSD were at their prime, and bg with Exo but now we know who is at the top. They had to redeem their image as the top company so they had to go all out.
I think this is the most they have done for a debut project since exo debut teasers and when you invest well like that it works!
My only concern is that i hope SM does not become too experimental with Aespa sound.

Ok, so I know with a 4 member group in terms of dancing there are only so many positions you can do. But while watching the MV, no one was really covered. I could see them all. Also, I didn't expect Winter to be that good of a vocalist. I love her tone. Also, I kinda wish Giselle kept the blonde hair. She reminded me of Girls Generation's Hyoyeon, where that colour could be a part of her trademark. They slayed it so well. But, even so, she looks great as a brunette too!

You can see in the MV, suddenly black mamba came to their world. And then karina's eyes change, I think its like their poisoned. And after that ae-Karina seems so sad looking to karina and ae-Winter dissappear in the mirror. And finally they fight back.
The one at the end, maybe ae-Black Mamba, new member in the future, or someone who will be important role in the next comeback. We dont know.

Even though I'm not the type of person to only enjoy Intellectual Music, the only thing I am iffy about it is the lyrics (mainly because I'm confused). The lyrics sounds like they're talking to/about the AI versions of themselves but then "hate my mamba"... what? Does anyone know about the lore or do we have to wait on that? Anyways great debut in my opinion, I'm curious to see what they'll put out in the future!
so from what I get is the black mamba is the woman in the scene with Karina or what people are saying is that it could be a computer virus which was what Ningning was struggling with in her computer scenes. Its stopping the virtual counterpart and the girls connecting which is why there wasn't much of the virtual stuff. Also people are thinking that Karina may be contaminated cos her eyes went black and she was expressionless when her and the virtual's fingers touched. Basically I think this mv is a world building thing and the next mvs will be going from there. Sorry this is so long and hope it helps!

Yeah it doesn't make sense. Plus, the music video is amazing so I don't why people would hate on that either. It's really the way SM handled all the situations surrounding the debut that's the problem. The good news is the like/dislike ratio on the MV is actually very good. So haters are a vocal but very small minority.
