BTW I don't know if others have mentioned this yet, but for your old shredder that is on it's last legs, perhaps it needs some shredder oil, which is basically canola oil in a squeeze bottle. One pass left to right then right to left of the oil into where you feed the paper, then run your shredder 10 seconds foward and 10 seconds backwards and you might have a new refreshed shredder. It brought my shredder back from the dead, saved me $, and saved having to put more into a landfill. Supposedly you need to oil a shredder regularly. Fun fact. :-)

I started my bins with compost, shredded leaves and newspaper. Bought 150 red wigglers from Walmart to fatten them up to fish with. Now I have fat worms and hundreds of small juveniles in my big bin, time to get the other bin going. Thanks for all your info and willingness to share.

Totally agree about not having drainage out the bottom. No need to have a bin that wet. 💕✌️

  • @catherineblair550

My bin does have a drainage bottom and it is nested. It was built as part of a worm composting workshop. I was actually a volunteer for these workshops. And I noticed my bin NEVER had drainage much less enough drainage to justify the spout we put at the bottom tray. Also, I hated that the babies got out through the bottom even though there was a screen. However, if you get micro screen and glue gun around the holes nothing can get through that. Not baby worms and not fruit flies. SInce I already have the nested system ANYWAY I intend to put a cooling or heating pack in the bottom in extreme heat or cold. Right now it's 90 degrees inside all the time and my bin is HOT at least 120 inside and I can't believe they are still alive but they are African nightcrawlers. Another advantage is the lid can be removed at on the bottom spout and air can get though the bottom. Whenever you use a screen, use micro screen.

I now have 3 bins, one with the AN one with the LSW, and one with LSW cocoons. Love your channel and all of your guidance.

Great video. I`m glad you made the point about the anaerobic bacteria because I see so many people calling the leachate worm tea and championing it as a wonder fertiliser. i think the commercial wormery manufacturers are at fault here because their systems encourage drain off and they don`t educate people about leachate. I think this series will help a lot of people.
    All the best. Mark

If the drainage becomes anaerobic it's not good for a nutrient additive if you know how to harvest it and store it you can have yourself a major worm casting liquid if you know how to separate bacteria's and stuff that others won't get into I can go on and on about The true definition of anaerobic bacteria

Hi Emily Great tutorial on starting a worm bin. A little background: I set up my first worm bin a week ago using coca coir and well composted leaf mulch, shredded packing paper, egg cartons, cardboard and a handful of nice garden soil for grit and just a little bit of vegetable scraps. This morning I added a pound of med. size European worms to the bin for composting and also for fishing use. MY question pertains to aeration. Since I'll probably be keeping the bin in the house I haven't made any holes in the bin yet but keep the lid sitting loosely on top for now. My fear is attracting insects like gnats. I was wondering since I already have aquariums and air pumps if you think it may be possible to place say a couple of 12 inch long air stones at the bottom of the bedding medium and pump fresh air directly into the bedding material itself and not drill holes in the bin where bugs could enter. I would probably have to monitor the moisture level more often but do you think that may be worth a try? What's your thoughts on that? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

what a cool channel! I started my first farm a few weeks ago and I wish I´d found this sooner. so far, the wooden box (DIY) seems to be running ok, can´t wait for the population to grow. I got about 100 wormsies (who can count them?) from an existing box, so they don´t really eat much just yet. It´s an excercise in patience. I´ll watch your videos while I wait.

    Hello!
I am just starting out with worm composting and have been using the UWB 2.0 for a few months now. I have two questions. First, I have a large amount of coconut coir bedding (I think I might have added way too much when starting the bag), do I need to feed the worms deep into the bag in order to get castings at the bottom for harvest? If I feed just on top how will there be castings at the bottom? Second, how can I tell the difference between the coconut coir bedding and the castings? Thank you for any help you can provide as I have not been able to find these answers online.

Hi Emily, saw you on martysgarden channel stream today and thought I should subscribe and check out some of your videos.
I'm from Melbourne Austraila where it's a bit cooler than Marty's zone. I We get frosts but snow/hail maybe once every few years and it soon melts.
I think we'd be similar to a US zone 9.
I do worms 3 ways (sounds like a cooking show)
worm feeders - basically buried buckets with no base that I put scraps in, then harvest some of the castings and worms and drop them in my raised beds.
Big stackable bins about 25gallon capacity and a smaller worm cafe stackable system - the usual size for home use.
Look forward to getting some good info from you.

I dream of a world where more people describe themselves as 'the crazy x lady/guy'. Nice video, by the way. Do you ever try worm bins without the drainage holes, like I've seen one guy on youtube doing it? I'm trying to decide how to raise worms, and I wonder if the trouble of worrying about water-logging is made worth it by not spilling worm juice everywhere. And if anyone's going to spill worm juice all over himself, it would be me.
EDIT: I just got to the bit in the video where you address this completely, so ignore this question. Or comment on it if you want, I guess.

Unless all your clothes are made of natural fibre (cotton, wool, flax linen, etc) I wouldn't add them in. Even then there's maybe the consideration of the dyes involved during manufacturing. Synthetic fibres like polyester won't break down in the compost. Where peanut shells are concerned, I don't see why they would be an issue, unless they're salted or something.

Is tending to a worm bin overall time consuming? I use worm casting only for my garden but my time is already very limited.

    • @robtdougherty
      @robtdougherty 4 роки тому

Depends on your personality. Once my bin is together, I spend on average 5 minutes, twice a week, putting in food and adding bedding. If your more involved, maybe more. Or if your more hands off you can feed once a week or every 2 weeks. So basically I would say on average 30 minutes a month on the worm bin. You can harvest the castings every 6 months to let it build up and make it worth the time to harvest. Keep it in 5 gallon buckets maybe till your ready to use it in the garden so it stays moist

I do sell Euros! I love them. They are a little quicker to climb with weather changes and tend to do well in systems that don’t have lids. I think they are fantastic.

@@vickimccaleb2253 freeze all of it, breaks down the cell walls. Blend until it's pretty much a liquid. Add a shot of activated lacto bacteria, after its reached room temp, made from either whey or a simple rice ferment, both can be found on yt, rice ferment lacto is the cheapest and quickest. Add enough shredded paper, cardboard, cocopeet or peatmoss untill its barely damp, feed this mix to your worms, and you won't have those issues.

just curious, why would i want to add things to my worm bin that the worms would not come by naturally in nature, for example newspaper and cardboard? inks, processed paper, glue, etc.. wouldn't a more natural habitat be better for you and the worms? thanks in advance.

Hi Emily. Just a quick question. Do you have any thoughts on using strictly aged horse manure as worm-bin bedding? Maybe with a little shredded cardboard or dried, crushed leaves. Forgive me if I already sent this question. I was thinking (?) about this the other day, and I think I actually may have typed out the question, but I don't know if I did, and if so, did I send it. (I had major surgery recently and am on narcotic pain meds :) )

What type of bedding is in the bin? Is there adequate aeration? What type of worms do you have? Is it raining? A lot of variables could be in play here. Give me some details and lets figure this out.
