The Major FLAW w/ 392 Manifolds

  • 6.4L 392 intake manifolds have active runners which is something that many 5.7L v8 hemi Charger RT, Challenger RT, Durango RT or Jeep owners upgrade to. If you're looking into getting an upgraded manifold like 6.1L SRT or Edelbrock make sure to consider a 392 Manifold but watch this 1st! The active runners in the 392 manifold go from long to short in the RPM range which creates a flow in performance. You will find this 392 intake manifold on all Scatpacks, 392 Daytonas, 392 SRT's & 392 T/A on the road.

Price vs performance it's better to do just a bolt on with the 6.1 instead of messing around with the 6.4 because there is literally very little difference in power between the two. Like 2-3hp👌

The manifold for the 6.1 is heavier and was one of the reasons that they went with fiber on the 392 in 2011, but the 6.1 is waaay cooler and the best-looking production mill built in decades. If you port them out well, it shave's some weight off

Yah most that select a 6.1 are planning on running a centrifugal forced air setup because of those advantages. I like the active runners but the 6.1 upside with forced air is the better option.

4800rpm is the optimum transition point for airflow in the manifold. That's down to helmholtz resonance and the manifold design, displacement differences between the 5.7 and 6.4 don't affect it.

I couldn’t pull the trigger on something like that especially since it comes stock on models like the 6.4 Hemi’s. If going with an aftermarket manifold I’d go big with in mind of pro charging it but I also wouldn’t bother if you plan on doing a positive displacement supercharger(whipple) since the manifold wouldn’t be needed. Just depends on the way you wanna go rather than having to reverse it. Although It would be cool to see a build with a billet Frankenstein manifold on a HEMI, those look awesome and do give you real gains when building an engine.

    • @RTLife

R/T Life sorry not sold on it for the minimal gains but I gotta say no one else has dove into this like you have so thank you for the content and info on this, if I was doing even a pro charger I’d probably look into manifold swaps but I’m leaning more towards a whipple so I wouldn’t need it. Just depends on the route you really wanna go and it does get to a certain point of decisions like that otherwise you’re gonna go backwards to get more hens money lost. Gotta think of it like a mod tree not a list lol

I suspect the reasoning for that factory calibration is to keep it from downshifting and changing the runner at the same time for improved driveability (full throttle pull)Basically never gonna see that rpm window unless its partial throttle of forcing it to be in too high of a gear (road track) thru a turn.
Recommend doing a running pull thru the gear shift and see the window its using.
The early v-tech days the honda guys would set them to come on too high. It would spin the tire on transition .

What about the Ram 5.7 intake? i've read that's where the extra 25ish hp comes from. And doesn't it also have variable intake runners? I don't know $1000 is a lot for an intake and i've never really liked the variable runners. Just more Togo wrong and for the extra 20-25 hp i'm not exactly sure it is worth it. i'm sure you could get some good gains by porting the 5.7 intake and tuning for it.
