- [4K] Vampire Coaster at Chessington, join us in Wild Woods for a stroll through the forest queue line into the Vampire's lair, past Marcel on his pipe organ, and on to the coaster where we take to the skies, soaring over the tree tops.
This was Planit Park's James, who had just reached 1.1m, first ride on this amazing coaster and we check out his reaction to it at the end.
Vampire is an Arrow Dynamics coaster located in the Wild Woods area of Chessington World of Adventures. This fantastic roller coaster opened on the 11th of April 1990 in what was then the new Transylvania area before it was renamed Wild Woods.
The trains hang from the track and swing freely as the roller coaster completes its way around Wild Woods. It has two lift hills, featuring many dives and turns through the trees and around the front of the Vampire restaurant and over the ride entrance and queue line. The ride's layout was designed by John Wardley and the theme was designed by British firm Sparks Creative.
Towards the turn of the century, the Vampire coaster began to suffer breakdowns and maintenance problems and was closed for the 2001 season. At the time it was rumored that this closure would be permanent as the manufacturer, Arrow Dynamics, had gone bankrupt and it was thought that little could be done to rectify the problems with the coaster.
Fortunately, a decision was made to modify the ride so that it could use a new type of suspended coaster train. The track layout was to remain unchanged so as not to require new planning permission but this required that the new trains would have to be able to swing around the tight corners to reduce lateral G forces. This led to the development of a swinging suspended floorless coaster train, manufactured by Vekoma, which is the one that is still in use today. The modified Vampire coaster ride opened in 2002.
A lot of the original theming has been removed which is a shame. Originally, the queue line had castle gates, a fog-filled underpass beneath the coaster track, a graveyard canopy with Gothic tombs, and a dark passageway into the station.
The ride itself has also seen changes, the original trains which were black, and bat-themed were replaced by the Vakoma floorless ones. Towards the end of the ride, the coaster takes a sudden drop into a tunnel, before entering the brake run. The tunnel was originally longer, darker, and themed as a cave, but this has since been removed.
Despite being 30 years old (20 since the new trains were installed) and a lot of theming has been removed this is still one of our favourite rides. We would love to go back to the early 1990s and see this ride with all its original theming and trains. We would also love to see Merlin restore all or at least some of the original theming that it had in the 1990s.
Height restrictions for the Vampire coaster are 1.1 meters (3 ft 7 in) for this ride. To ride unaccompanied guests need to be at least 1.3 meters (4 ft 3 in). Vampire reaches speeds of around 45mph with a g-force of 4g's

And don’t forget VBK is outside.
Has this ride gotten slower and less aggressive? I’ve went on this a few years ago and could’ve sworn that it gave me neck injuries
When the man said “that was fun” when it stopped I thaught it was over and I was like geez that’s short
I love the ride is one of my top Favourite rides
I'm going this weekend with my bsf and I went back in 2017 and 2018 and refused to go on this ride but I'm determined to get on this weekend, wish me luck lol ill need it
Good Luck, hopefully you will love it and be queuing up again straight after, let us know how you get on
When I went chessington in a school trip it took me 2 hrs to get on the ride
Very popular ride, we still love going on it when we can, the queues are always long, usually see around 90 minutes at least on busy days.
Went august last year, queue said 20 minutes, ended up waiting for more like 70. Great ride though, can't wait to go back on it tomorrow!
Yeah it's a great ride, is subject to breakdowns and lengthy queues, but we love it, it's a must ride for us during the Howl'o'ween event. Have a great day tomorrow, hopefully the wait times are not too long
@@PlanItPark thank you!
I’ve always wanted to see what this ride looks like going on it tomorrow! Thanks
Hope you got on it and had an awesome day
I’m sorry it’s been a couple days Xd but I went on it and had an amazing time I went on a lot of other rides too including kobra!
I went on it today and it was scary I started screaming.
Place really needs a lick of paint. Gone down hill.
Good video, really enjoyed and look forward to more POV's in future on this channel. 100% by the way Vampire either needs to go a.k.a a new rollercoaster replaces it or my liking a retrack takes place with new track installed replacing the old and new immersive theming is added. Cause ride now looks rundown to the point needs in my opinion more theming, new colours to pick the excitement and story back up. Maybe could do with more Dracula themed castle theming with more building structures as near miss elements? With new & more vampire theming around the ride lift hill and paths etc. More effects aswell, maybe a logo update and station aswell? Coaster aswell with new trains to replace old ones? Would like to see this coaster reimagined 100% more than a new coaster or moved to another section of park & reimagined and retracked there? With a new coaster type placed in this section a.k.a thinking maybe a wooden GCI Coaster. But guess will have to wait & see what happens in future. But yeah, good video, really enjoyed and look forward to more videos in future. 😀👍
Absolutely, it is could be so much more than it currently is, it has had a quite bit of theming removed over the years. It is still a great ride with a great atmosphere right from when you step into the queue, when they had the queue lines come alive a few years back, with Dracula and other characters roaming the queues it was so much better, but that was a one off for the Halloween event. We would hate to see this great ride removed, it is still really popular but it could do with some updates. With the new Jumanji area coming this year it is not likely that Vampire will be getting any updates soon.
@@PlanItPark, I don't really want to see it removed from the park as its a good rollercoaster for all ages to experience, which is why I would prefer they moved it elsewhere in the park if they could. Which is unlikely, creating space for a new coaster or attraction in its place? Think likely it will be retracked after this season I hope or next season 2024, but think it could also do with longer experience, more immersive theming added to it and maybe more character interactions in the queue lines aswell maybe at the entrance? Maybe even offer a preshow section somewhere in the queue line? To properly immerse all guests into rides storyline? But I guess have to wait & see what happens in future? But yeah cheers for this video, really enjoyed and look forward for more videos like this in future. 😀👍
I say get vekoma to entirely retrack the ride (seeing as they offer suspended coasters) and give it their new gen train design
When is it getting a refurb ?
Nothing has been announced regarding Vampire, with the successful refurb of Nemesis at Alton Towers, it is hoped Merlin may consider doing the same for Vampire, Vampire is 4 years older than Nemesis. However Chessington has plans for a huge water park which if this was to go ahead would be the next project, although not much has been heard about this since the consultation last year. With other projects in the pipeline we may have to wait a bit longer for a Vampire update.
Did the little boy rides on it? He was too young to ride it.
There is no age limit on Vampire, there is a height restriction of 1.1m, our boy was just over 1.1m so was allowed on it, he loved it, rode it twice as there was no queues at the time. It's old ride but still one of our favourites, wish they would give it a new overhaul like they did with Nemesis at Alton Towers, we can hope
