I use both methods. We like to wander, go where a whim takes us knowing we can navigate to any given point anyway.

That’s funny-I guess I do use my Montana almost entirely as a moving map because I will go to a trailhead and then just walk-I like to know where I am and I do that by making the map scale bigger or smaller…. I also always like to go a new way each time I go somewhere just to see what there is to see. And then I use my Montana to ensure I can get back to my car and not be turned around or something…. Most of the places I go don’t have any or reliable cell signals so that is the main reason I have a GPS rather than using a phone app…. And then when I get home I like to see where I went and I load it onto the computer and look at it there. Also I do what is called cani-cross which stands for canine cross-country and for the club I belong to I’m required to keep a record of where we went; sometimes we go a long distance and other times not. I guess I’m not much of an advance route planner! 😊

In one of my 'walk and talk' videos I discuss how the Montana is great for those people who do not want to plan routes before heading out, here is the extract - ua-cam.com/video/IVq-Jk5_PZ8/v-deo.html
