I like the sequire sq-001. I think there was an even bigger price difference from the ts-100 when I bought mine than there is now. I must be running older firmware, because mine goes to 450.
What a difference a year makes eh. The Pinecel was slightly ahead of the game a year ago with a small lead on the TS100 but only in a couple of areas. Now, since December, 2022 we can buy the TS101 which has two power ports extending the flexibility of the product. The Pinecel does not allow rotating of the screen for lefties and that's me so right off the bat, it is not suitable for my use. I will be using a barrel plug on the TS101 I have orfdered so the USB C in both of these comparable irons isn't even an issue for me. The TS101 is shorter but both suffer from long reach which exaggerates any hand wobbles that may occur - deadly for SMD work. So sadly for me, I still haven't found the perfect iron, and I have 9 different types.
In your heat-up test, you talk about how the power dies off as it gets closer to the target-temperature. That's because the tip-temperature is actually controlled by a PID-loop, same as 3D printers or a quadcopter like what we fly, so it's intentionally lowering the power to avoid over-shooting. Or at least, I remember that being a selling-point of basically all of the more fancy irons... Also, if I remember correctly, the TS-100 on official firmware has a max-temperature of 400C, and the power-boost mode that Ralim uses can push it to max (I think it also disables the PID loop), which is probably around 450C. But I haven't looked into it since the week I got my TS-100. :)
For price, why not the Sequre Mini SQ-001? It's a TS100 basically that RDQ sells with a barrel to XT60 cable and small solder iron/sponge stand for $44? That seems like the most economical choice at least for people in the US to get a TS100.
I'm running my TS100 off of a power tool 18V (basically a 5S) battery. I built myself an adapter with a XT60 plug, to slide on the battery (the base part is from AliExpress). But to be honest, I use it very rarely, because I do almost all solder jobs with a couple of T12 soldering stations from China.
Pinecil is running RISC-V, not IV, and I believe the number five is just a name. Pine64 is based in Hong Kong, and they at least ship from China. Bought it from taobao, it ships from Shenzhen.
Yes all of what you said regarding how FPV pilots would think about this soldering iron is accurate. I also thought about not being able to use 6S on this iron. RISC-V is not as well known as ARM (which most MCU are using), and China is basically pushing toward RISC-V in order to not be dependent on ARM.
Going to buy the SEQURE SQ-001 soon, it's like 38 euro. Bought their spot welder aswell, the quality is pretty good and the prices are pretty low compared to other brands. Was wondering why you didn't mention that one, but I guess you didn't know about it's existence.
I watched your video on the Pincel. I bought it and was happy with it for the 3 times is worked. As of right now its dead on the desk, I emailed Pine 64 but haven't heard back yet. The price was nice but I'm bummed its dead.

I have the TS100 and I use only a 3 cell battery. It heats up to 550F very fast and I can solder with any size solder no problem. I do like the price of the clone you have. It's nice to have choices which is why also have a few other small portable (rechargeable) options to choose from. Anyway, nice video look forward to your next episode. Ty
There is a ways to power TS100 from usb PD, using the special cable, and there is a ways, to use Pinecil v1 with higher voltage. Btw, 21v problem with Pinecil v1 was fixed in Pinecil v2.
So I bought the pinecil the right after I watched your first video on it. I Used the affiliate link :) I finally just received it. I plugged it in to a 4S 1550mah at 3.8v per cell and my iron heated to 400°c in 27 seconds. So I don’t see a need for 5s anyway. So far I only fly 4s quads so this iron is great for me
I jsut ordered myself a TS101 for my birthday.^^ I think they're all just amazing and exactly what's still missing from my toolbag and often kept me from successful repairs in the field... ;) cheers
Forgot to add another informative vid. And thank you again for making my fpv hobbies understandable. You don't get how much you do for the community, I would have ended up killing my wife burning my house and killing my self in a car accident this hobbies is so hard but Joshua, the pope of fpv saved me, he gave me patience, he said son watch the vid! You will learn something today and I did! And on the second day I was told son you might learn something today and again I did. Thank you our farther who out thou in fpv heaven for your help when God himself couldn't! Love you stuff bro
I still currently only have a bench soldering station. Still on the fence on portable options. Currently using a ToAuto 3-1 station. It work's well for me in most applications. As thing's continue to shrink in size in the hobby. I am looking at a flight pack powered option. I don't mind buying a few 5s to solider with. Easy way not to mix actual flight packs with tooling packs. Thank you Joshua once again helping ole Gandaulf fumble his way down the FPV rabbit hole. Mad respect sir.
i run my pinecil off of a 24v laptop charger with no issue... with voltage set to max also there is a power setting for like what I can only call hysteresis don't remember what it's actually called but there is like a dwell time where it will sit at a higher wattage for longer
If you need a XT60 to USB-C conversion device, check out the ToolkitRC SC100 wire. In order to connect it to the flight pack you will still need a XT60 male to male adapter, but when you have a soldering iron, you can make it up yourself) Also, having say a ToolkitRC M7 charger you can potentially power up the iron from the Power Output on the charger through the SC100 cable. And there are some other options which you can come up with, so there is a field for experiments. P.S. Pinecil V2 for the win!
The Pinecil V2 was just released today, and has bridged the gap between the V1 and the TS100. It now accepts 24v @3a through the DC jack, while still maintaining the USB PD input and the USD$25.99 price. I believe they are opening an EU store to reduce shipping cost outside of the US as well!
@@JoshuaBardwell I guess we'll have to find out if 24v is a hard limit. Strangely, it's rated 18-88w rather than 72w (24v * 3a), so it might not be a hard limit
I think it’s an all around good model given it’s shape shifting ability. However some may question it’s use given it failed it’s mission in Terminator 2.
I went for the TS100 as from the UK and was widely available and the tips are also widely available perhaps that’s the same for the pinecil tho could not find any sellers for that iron in the UK and with an adapter one could power from a USB-PD power bank since the Type-C for firmware upgrading
Ya I have the aftermarket firmware on my ts100 and it seems to go to like 430 or so fine but I like that wattage display I looked a couple weeks ago to see if anything changed but I didn't really find any useful information so I may update it
You flashed the firmware from the pinesil soldiering iron on to the TS 100. That is why it's behaving Exactly as the other soldering iron. I have a completely different firmware flashed on my TS 100. It goes to 450° no problem.
Thanks for mentioning that it's hard to get in EU, I have a very high end powerbank that's capable of supplying 65W and I would much rather use a powerbank than waste Lipos in the field, being able to power it with USB-C PD is a massive upside to me.
What I was told is that it burns out a pin on the chip that is required to flash new firmware. So it will still function, but you won't be able to flash new firmware to it. I haven't verified this.
I'm running TS100_EN 2.05 PCB1 052018 ver on TS100, big diff in temp of 420c or 450c, 420c my normal temp and 450 for xt60 connectors and wire, got 2 ts100, 1st came with small power adapter and flaky, the second came with brick power supply and solid connecter, fyi I think u said in video ts100 does't come with PSupply both mine did, course my first ts100 is over 5ys and when they 1st came out. t has done over 200 kwads.
FYI, NV14 is now on latest Edgetx, new life for a dumped controller, neg-got to power xfire w/ ext batt and I need to update my 4in1 range tx module, maybe not, as long as D8 and D16 work.
Everyone seems to recommend the TS100. I bought a Pinecil to save a few buck. The Pinecil lasted 3 days and now shuts off on "thermal overload" Guess I shouldn't have been cheap and bought the TS100 from the start.
DC to usb pd: XY-PDS100, no xt60 just barrel plug,12 to 28v input (buck converter so input has to be higher the output) But personally I use a t12 soldering station
The main advantage of the RISC-V processor is that, being an open source architecture, the manufacturer doesn’t have to pay royalties to use it. That likely contributes to the Pinecil’s lower cost.
I use my multiple Pinecils off of my 6s packs. All the time. I noticed they used to write -25v on them but now they write 21v... Wonder why. None of mine have blown yet and I have the clear cases which look so fancy 😂
I did show that in my original Pinecil review, but that's just a function of the firmware, which runs on several different irons, and doesn't mean the Pinecil can support higher voltage. Several commenters on my original Pinecil review video said that a component in the iron would be damaged on 6S input.
@@JoshuaBardwell Ah yes, maybe I missed that. Good point about the firmware, nonetheless, they do in fact work on 6s as I've tested 3 so far. Not sure if it will effect the life span of it or not, but so far so good. They could have also disabled 6s if they know it is problematic. Pine64 are a tech company after all.
From the official Pine64 wiki: The first batch of Pinecil's were rated 12-24v @ 65W. After some heated discussion on the discussion group, it was decided that it would be downgraded to 12-21V @ 60W, due to concern over the connection of the DC jack to the USB-PD chip, which has a recommended maximum of 21v, and absolute maximum of 28v.
You can get USB PD to DC barrel jack converters in many of the standard diameters, so the TS100 can overcome that limitation. However when that is said and done, why not just get both?
What about using the ToolKitRC P200? It has a PD2.0 and PD3.0 USB-C output and a XT60 7-28V input. It may be a little big but it is small for everything it does.
ts100: the 65w are not used is not a firmware bug. we could reproduce it. 65w is not possible on 4s. You need the almost 6s (22v) to be able to use 65w at the tip because the soldering iron apparently passes the input voltage on to the tip 1:1. maybe this is for joshua bardwell from the future in the video. 😜
TS100 for many years.. put a silicone piece from a pen on it like the Pinecil now has.. Better grip ! and on the solder tip i`ve put something similar to it, so i can grab it "lower" ?!
Funny thing. When you order from germany it is exactly the same price. I thought I could try the pinecil, but it literally cost here 50€ same as the TS100. So with no price differences. The TS100 is for me slightly more worthy
Now need to test if temps are accurate.. No 6s kinda sucks, but I have 5s typically with me.. Already have the ts100, but might get the this one as a spare. Might like the wider grip. And I do have usb laptop chargers
No unfortunately that's the opposite. It goes from USB-PD source to XT60. So you can run a charger off a USB-PD supply. I need something that goes from DC input 6S to USB-PD 20v output.
I got the T's 100 and it's brilliant as long as you pump the heat up to 480c and you don't have to do too much negative stuff as it rips the heat out of it. But out and about the T's has been the difference between going home or making one quad out of 2 broken ones. Either way its a must have in the tool box, or talk your flying mates to get one?
I think my post didn't work because of mentions from a shop, just search for "usb pd trigger board" somewhere and you'll see a cheap device that does the job.
Yeah, I don’t think a soldering iron is something most people would upgrade or whatever unless you’re already in the market for one. It always gets me how my friends will have like 3-5 radios, but their flying is still the same, even after they upgraded the radio. I think the same for this iron… your soldering won’t improve without practice, so if your current iron works, what’s the point in getting a new one? Just me?
It's not that hard to get it in Europe. I bought it from the official store, they also have European warehouse (in Netherland if I remember), you have to pay for the shipment of course but it's still cheaper than ts100.
Some irony about the title "two delicious irons": with a 450 degree max, soldering lead free is basically a non starter. JB knows for sure that he's tasting a fully leaded snack.
Wow... So I'd recently upgraded from my non-digital Weller to a Hakko bench top iron. It doesn't label C or F and I'd just assumed it was giving temps in C. Lesson learned.
If i understood correctly about a xt60 to usb-c connection I have one that came with my SEQURE D60...the one with the LED numerical. I dont know if they sell that cord adaptor separately but at least its a start?
How does the Pinecil perform on a 13,8V 20A PSU, please? There is 12V and 20V setting on it, if I remember well. 13,8V and 20A could give in theory 276W, so if voltage can be considered flexible there are plenty of amps to pull. So basically is the iron limited on voltage in this setup?
Shipping is (or at least used to be) an 11$ flat rate to Russia from the pine64 store. Buying several irons and sharing them with the community makes it even less per iron. I guess I don't need to say which iron I've got. The price and USB-C capability were the deciding factors (although I must admit I've only powered it once from USB-C, and that was to solder up an xt60 to barrel plug wire, which I've been using exclusively since then :). Oh, and I'm also one of those weirdos who fly 5S :) Anyway, it's an awesome iron, especially for the price, but I can't say if it's the best. I probably would've been just as happy with an SQ-001 or TS100, but would never have bought the latter. It's just too expensive for what it is :)
What about those adapters for adding PD ports to your car? They take 12-24v input and and have a PD output. Could they be used to adapt a 6s battery to the pinecil PD port if you wired an xt60 to one?
I'd love to get portable iron for when I'm out and about, but I'm used to irons with very little stick-out and I'm not sure I'd be able to manage. I stopped burning myself with soldering irons many years ago when I bought one without the long stick-out, is the flexibility of where you can use them really worth burning yourself every month?
I can see some stores on Aliexpress have the Pinecil 64 for $AU55 post free. Waste of time (and money) buying anything from the US these times with the postage at a minimum of $US25. Greetings from Tasmania.

Hi Joshua, I love your content as a embedded software who recently got into drones (I only fly in sim tho) I want a new soldering iron for my daily work and saw you which I don’t why but didn’t expect to see you and when you mentioned github I suprised more and when you talked about processors I was very surprised but laughed when you said risk-IV because that’s is the literally the first time I’ve ever heard someone called risk-IV. This is not a insult or something, I really love your contents and it’s a tiny mistake. Bye ❤
my TS100 with new Ralim FW has no issue getting to 450... run it at 450 literally every time i use it. that was a huge turnoff in your last video about the pinecil cause alot of us solder Macro Quads and thicker guage wire... oh... and just to let you know... im using the SainSmart ts100, but own a Knockoff by MIN aswell (your TS100 in your Video) and that specific one DOES have trouble going higher than 425... maybe using a more Namebrand ts100 for review for proper comparisons would eliminate that 25 Degree issue atleast. not trying to troll just sharing my experience with the irons
It's not just the pinecil though. I think it's a firmware issue since there is a ralim github issue about it. github.com/Ralim/IronOS/issues/567 I also used to have a TS100 that went all the way to 450 on an older version of Ralim. Ralim themself says, "Its quite possible before when you had it set to 450C it wasn't actually reaching 450C."
@@JoshuaBardwell its possible... and i know there have been github and troubleshoot threads about it too. My info is more about a possibility that it could be the firmware and hardware combining... Im not sure which release candidate you used for Ralim upgrade but i just (about 3 weeks ago) updated to the newest version... both my Sainsmart and my MiN ts100's... both on the exact same FW release, and downloaded file... and the MiN does NOT get to 450... whereas the sainsmart Does...so if it were just a firmware issue... than using the same firmware file on 2 different brand TS100 should have the same result... if hardware had no influence on it that is... Hence why i mentioned to try it on the Actual TS100 by sainsmart... not one of the Wholesale versions like MiN... They both seem to be decent irons...

Btw, 21v problem with Pinecil v1 was fixed in Pinecil v2.
Just had to fix some LEDs the other day, made me finally go buy a portable one even though I love my station. TS101 is the way to go IMO.
So far I only fly 4s quads so this iron is great for me
We have the same pfp
I’m more than happy with my ts100 and won’t be changing.
I jsut ordered myself a TS101 for my birthday.^^ I think they're all just amazing and exactly what's still missing from my toolbag and often kept me from successful repairs in the field... ;)
cheers
Got Pinecil V2 from official site. Shipped from China
I'm pretty sure some portable lipo chargers let you discharge the batteries via a USB c output, not sure if it is QC or PD compatible though...
I use my TS100 and SEQURE SQ-D60B as portables, with my 65W baseus BS-30KP365 powerbank and works like a charm!
You could use the XY-PDS100 usb pd module with an xt60 to barrel jack adapter. It's rated max input is 28v dc.
i run my pinecil off of a 24v laptop charger with no issue... with voltage set to max also there is a power setting for like what I can only call hysteresis don't remember what it's actually called but there is like a dwell time where it will sit at a higher wattage for longer
If you need a XT60 to USB-C conversion device, check out the ToolkitRC SC100 wire. In order to connect it to the flight pack you will still need a XT60 male to male adapter, but when you have a soldering iron, you can make it up yourself)
Also, having say a ToolkitRC M7 charger you can potentially power up the iron from the Power Output on the charger through the SC100 cable.
4.2 * 6 = 25.2 volts. 24v is still not 6S rated :-(
@@JoshuaBardwell I guess we'll have to find out if 24v is a hard limit.
Ya I have the aftermarket firmware on my ts100 and it seems to go to like 430 or so fine but I like that wattage display I looked a couple weeks ago to see if anything changed but I didn't really find any useful information so I may update it
About the RISC processor.
Think it's becauce it is open standard so to support those organisations who open up for there tech.
Voltage hard limit? Hmm I've been using my pinecile of 6s since I bought it, still works
What I was told is that it burns out a pin on the chip that is required to flash new firmware. So it will still function, but you won't be able to flash new firmware to it. I haven't verified this.
@@JoshuaBardwell hmm in that case I won't be able to comment until I try upgrading the firmware. Good to know though.
If you can verify it please let me know. Email joshuabardwell@gmail.com please rather than reply here though.
DC to usb pd: XY-PDS100, no xt60 just barrel plug,12 to 28v input (buck converter so input has to be higher the output)
But personally I use a t12 soldering station
The main advantage of the RISC-V processor is that, being an open source architecture, the manufacturer doesn’t have to pay royalties to use it. That likely contributes to the Pinecil’s lower cost.
Pinecil V2 is now up to 24 volts FYI
I'm a year late and it's not a big deal but just a heads up. RISC-V is risc '5' not '4'. :)
Isn't it RISC-V?
URUAV XT-60 to USB Charger Converter. Its a 3-6s XT60 to 20V 45W USB-A Converter
Has anyone found a good stand for the ts100 ? The soldering iron has no decent stand out of the box, it keeps falling on me and on my stuff.
I bought the official little ceramic one, it's kinda cute but expensive.
I use my multiple Pinecils off of my 6s packs. All the time.
I noticed they used to write -25v on them but now they write 21v... Wonder why.
None of mine have blown yet and I have the clear cases which look so fancy 😂
And.... In the power menu it goes up to 6s.. you could have showed that.
@@ZED-PV did you test only ones that say -25v or also ones that say -21v ?
From the official Pine64 wiki:
The first batch of Pinecil's were rated 12-24v @ 65W. After some heated discussion on the discussion group, it was decided that it would be downgraded to 12-21V @ 60W, due to concern over the connection of the DC jack to the USB-PD chip, which has a recommended maximum of 21v, and absolute maximum of 28v.
Why don't you have a PD powerbank to charge your XT60 batteries with? there's PD chargers
xy-pds100 is what you are looking for. Use a barrel connector with a xt30
You can get USB PD to DC barrel jack converters in many of the standard diameters, so the TS100 can overcome that limitation. However when that is said and done, why not just get both?
I love my ts80 iron. It's currently available for little more than the ts100.
For what it's worth...recently bought the PINECIL soldering iron. Never had a chance to demo the TS100.....
You can't get replacement shell for TS100, I tried and it's very sad. Pineci is newer and it looks like the ts100 is discontinued.
Could you not use a speedybee adapter to power this from a 6s?
TS100 for many years.. put a silicone piece from a pen on it like the Pinecil now has.. Better grip !
and on the solder tip i`ve put something similar to it, so i can grab it "lower" ?!
Bought the Pinecil and fell in love with it.. Replaced the garbage one I had been using from Radio Shack.
you ca open up the pinecil and cut a single trace, no functionality lost, and it will be fine running 24v, look it up
Funny thing.
I power mine of my 6s packs no problem. I also use a PD capable powerbank and that also works really well.
Get 3 Pinecils for the price of 1 ts100 😂
Pinecil ships from China, although you can buy ones from certified resellers that ship from different countries
Isn't this the cable you're looking for?
ToolkitRC SC100 USB-C to XT60 Adapter Cable
He meant a source board not a trigger board
That's correct. Trigger board goes the other way. I need from XT60 source to USB-PD 20v output.
You realize the 450 is in celsius right? That's more than hot enough for use with lead free solder.
You really like the smell of burned wire do you? xD
Oh, and I'm also one of those weirdos who fly 5S :)
Anyway, it's an awesome iron, especially for the price, but I can't say if it's the best.
Thank you man! I have 6s SolarSystem, so i got my decision^^
What’s the best affordable at home type wall plug in iron?
TS80P comparison pls
I'd love to get portable iron for when I'm out and about, but I'm used to irons with very little stick-out and I'm not sure I'd be able to manage. I stopped burning myself with soldering irons many years ago when I bought one without the long stick-out, is the flexibility of where you can use them really worth burning yourself every month?
I've never burned myself with any iron... maybe just be more careful? TS100 user here and before that, cheapo $30 Amazon specials.
I’ve had my ts100 since 2017 (it was 43$ back then BTW) and use it all the time. Not once did I burn myself.
I can see some stores on Aliexpress have the Pinecil 64 for $AU55 post free. Waste of time (and money) buying anything from the US these times with the postage at a minimum of $US25. Greetings from Tasmania.
Hakko fx-951 on the bench and ts100 portable, sorted :)
Are tips interchangeable?
I'm only finding result's for RISC-V? more digging to be done.
Ummm. Maybe it's RISC-V? I have to confess that was not a big part of my research on the iron.
@@JoshuaBardwell It is. Nerd me had to go digging. My brain never stops with the quest for knowledge. Thank you as always Mr. Bardwell. I really hope someday soon I can fly the two quads I have built with your instruction. I look forward everyday to see your video's. You, Lexie, Bot and Tommy have kept my spirits high and taught me ton's of priceless knowledge. I hope one day to be able to repay all of you. My Ts100 is 3 years old..... if it ever dies I think I'll try....... another Ts100 ;-)
Can your review the QianLi Nano Iron and YOUYUE E210?
Also check out this $12 solder review: Cheapest 8W USB Soldering iron Review - By Handskit.
Bye ❤
new revision can make 28 volts and 126 watts. So inow this is the best solder iron in the market.
I was sooo lost when you mentioned RISC-IV I'm going to have to nerd on it after the video... dang it......🙈
my TS100 with new Ralim FW has no issue getting to 450... run it at 450 literally every time i use it. that was a huge turnoff in your last video about the pinecil cause alot of us solder Macro Quads and thicker guage wire... oh... and just to let you know... im using the SainSmart ts100, but own a Knockoff by MIN aswell (your TS100 in your Video) and that specific one DOES have trouble going higher than 425... maybe using a more Namebrand ts100 for review for proper comparisons would eliminate that 25 Degree issue atleast. not trying to troll just sharing my experience with the irons
It's not just the pinecil though. I think it's a firmware issue since there is a ralim github issue about it. github.com/Ralim/IronOS/issues/567
I also used to have a TS100 that went all the way to 450 on an older version of Ralim.
What's the point of USB C if it needs PD? I'd rather have USB B so I could actually use it heheh
PD can supply more power, upto 240W for Power Delivery 3.1
@@nblynx2148 yeah but PD is pretty rare rn, you might as well just use the main cable, and not many ppl have that kinda power supply for PD. Whereas EVERYONE has usb b cables, and itll work with most likely any power supply
The iron requires high power to heat up.
@@JoshuaBardwell I just feel like if usb b is enough for that one, then usb c should be good enough for the other. But i suppose theres something going on inside I dont know about that requires EXTRA power than the ts100 does
@@JoshuaBardwell like I wish the ts100 had a regular usb c
