I like to think there’s no justification needed if it’s a hobby. That’s why we all have careers: so we can afford to do the stuff that gets us excited about getting out of bed. If you have 17 Les Pauls, who cares! It’s what YOU want. Hobbies are basically irrational, No one else has to understand it.

As a 20 year old, seems choosing a Tele, Strat or Les Paul can get you playing in bands for a few years. Along with an acoustic. But - hobby! Playing cover bands, open jams, and just at home - with a good job, getting a new guitar every 3-5 years is fun. IMO, some spend more on gambling, the bar, or extensive traveling. Nice to have something to show for it after years. Something to share with the kids, too.

I was up to 90 guitars… just listed 50 for consignment at Carter Vintage in Nashville. I’m in the Zach side of this where I love physical objects - appreciate the details and colors and design choices. I have the emotional attachment for sure. I could collect thousands of pens if I let myself. I have had to literally work surrounded by guitar cases and boxes. I’m grateful I’ve figured out how to let some go, but every time one sells it’s definitely bittersweet 25:00

Years ago I went through firefighter training for a major city. One of my classmates was tooth-grindingwhiteknucklepantswettingjellykneewildeyed afraid of heights. And he still went up ladders, again and again. Bravest dude I ever knew. After a few weeks he told us, "Guys, I'm not having fun here. I can't have a career in which I am this scared all the time." None of us faulted him or thought less of him for stepping away.

Similarly, my uncle was a line man for the department of water and power in Southern California where high winds will frequently knock out the power. He said being on top of those poles, swinging back-and-forth in high winds and complete darkness was always terrifying. But he made really good money.

For ages I went back-and-forth buying, selling buying, selling. I then picked up my 335 (well, Collings - but still) and it just stopped. I now just have one of each main categories: Strat, LP, 335, P90.

DANG! I was just about to make a video on my tiny little channel about this topic. I probably still will. Short answer - guitars (when combined with amps and effects) are like keyboards. The palette of sounds you want determines what you need. And if different guitars cause you to write differently, and songwriting is important to you, that can help.

I live in LA county and given the recent wildfires, I organized my most valuable guitars and equipment to the bare essentials and it was quite revealing to me what I really value most (1998 PRS CE 24, 2024 PRS Custom 24, and 70’s era Gibson Hummingbird, Mesa Boogie Mark V, plus some pedals no longer made or otherwise difficult to replace) in case we needed to evacuate. Thankfully that didn’t happen but it was an interesting moment. Nevertheless, GAS can be fun, just be honest with yourself whether it’s causing you harm or it’s a distraction from the hard work of being creative.
BTW, I think Rhett has worn that Madison Cunningham Revealer shirt for the last three episodes 😂

Had the same thing with the Australian Wildfires of late 2019/early 2020, which was then followed (the following week) by severe flooding at my place and in my area.
I got me gear together and only had enough cases (having not been able to get to a music shop to buy more) and filled only the 3 cases I had. Turns out, the only one I really kept after all these years from my original guitars back then was my PRS.
In theory, I could survive with a tele and a humbucker guitar, despite being a strat guy at heart. Tele is just too versatile.

I think this is a question that has two streams. 1 how long have you been playing 2. How big of a music career you have.
So most people have a similar pathway. As a kid you want to play guitar. So day 1 you have 1 guitar. Sometimes it’s an acoustic sometimes it’s an electric. As you get better you likely buy the other.
Neither of this has any real resale value so your collection has 2. About when you get to your 20s if you gig you upgrade these so that’s 4 or maybe 6 if you need back ups.
If your a hobbyist that doesnt gig well it’s probably 2 more before your 30. Mid priced upgrades.
In your 30s if you’re a local gig guy. You likely add at least another 4 cause well you’ve started to beat the others up.
If you got slightly famous your probably getting to at least 10-15 cause they are tools and your looking for sounds and so forth.
The hobbyist starts having kids and so forth. So maybe no more maybe a few more depending on your income
In your 40s the local gog guy has another 4 sane reason.
The pro just has stuff turning up.
The hobbyist finally starts to build some wealth maybe another 2 -4
I’m a hobbyist I have 18. About 8-10 have been bought since I was 40 and that was really about just buying good stuff. About half of what I have is totally worthless and the rest are so much money I have to list it seperately in my contents insurance.
Sure everyone’s journey is different and this is a generalization.
The pro gets to their 70s and have to sell about a 100 just to clear room out of their storage cause they really won’t be out playing much.
The local gog guy probanly starts selling in their 50s cause well you’ve really haven’t touched the older ones for a while and that’s $$ in the door for better stuff.
Anyway that was way too long. Sorry haha

I have GAS for sure. I just left a local shop with a Way Huge Swollen Pickle. Do I need yet another fuzz? No. Do I really play with fuzz a lot? Nope. I’m more of an overdrive guy. Am I happy I bought it? Hell yes. That thing is a monster pedal. I’m a hobbyist who never plays for people. But I love having this stuff and like Zach said, working on the stuff is just as much fun as playing.

So many good nuggets here - GAS related - dopamine hit, 100%, structuring the deal in your head (what can I sell to get X) trying to get a new one, etc. The bigger question is what happens when you build up 3-5 excellent ones and you have to consolidate, and you believe there is merit in all of them lol.

Besides that I have 14 more. One was bought because the band I was in at the time wanted to do some songs that required some serious dive bombs so I got a PRS SE with a Floyd Rose on it. The rest are a mixture of guitars I bought because they seemed cool or were free or in one case a Christmas present or are mules to hack around mess with repair and/or carve up as experiments. Some some are instruments to be played and others to be played around with but they are all good fun.

I used to chase guitars I hear on UA-cam thinking that this or that guitar will finally enable me to grow as a player. In the end, playing is the only thing that can make me a better player. When Julian Lage gets his sound from a telecaster, you realize it’s not about the guitar. I say this as I look at my 8 guitars, and I still suck as a player!

    • @ScottsGuitar
      @ScottsGuitar 3 дні тому

Discipline pays dividends over time. I just saw Julian Lage live recently for the first time and you can see the hours in his playing. And yet how much joy does he have when he plays now? If someone can relate practice discipline directly to joy then it becomes easier to justify when it’s not always convenient. Ive been playing for 25 years (many professionally) and that’s what’s kept me going. That and personal goals to keep you accountable, of course 😊 I have never had more joy playing the guitar than I do today. Listen to ppl like Slash and David Gilmour and they will say the same: they’ve never had more fun than they are right now. That hard work pays off then you get to keep it forever. Cheers friend

I had three -- two Jazzmasters and a humbucker guitar. I ended up buying another humbuggy guitar as my original one was getting more use for recording, live performances, touring and weekly practices and was starting to wear. If it went down I'd be boned.
So I'd say four is a good number. I never needed an acoustic since and it's less necessary since I use digital modelling at home so anything's a couch guitar.

I have a hard time justifying my collection even to myself. I'm a mediocre noodler on my best days and I wound up with 12 guitars - many of them impulse purchases. Now I realize that they own me instead of me owning them. Just the string changes, twice a year setups and maintenance equates to less time playing. Out of the 12 I have I'd like to unload 7 and either get or build a super rad custom Tele.

None, if we're being completely honest. It's not a job. It's just a hobby.
Now let's consider fountain pens and watches.

Sheraton II with Gibson 57, Strat SS + minihamb little 59.
    4 acoustic guitars (3 western, 1 classic).
For studios working that good. All guitars for left handed.
Joe Pass have been 1 guitar… One guitar!??…. Yes! ;)

you can think of it this way: buying fewer guitars allows you to get more pedals.

I hear yah @Rhett Shull. I’ve played guitar and sucked at it for 30 years. I’ve put a pause at it and I really recommend Bitwig as a DAW. It tickles my interest. It will be awesome for controlling and enhancing your synths

In my case I have 10, I NEED 8. What I need is an SSS, an HH, an acoustic with a preamp, and a bass - all that x2 cause I need backups for gigs, which makes it 8. I also have a classical guitar that was my first ever guitar and a super cheap crappy acoustic I borrowed from and a firend and she doesn't want it back so these are the 2 I don't need.

I've seen those 'body guards' foam rubber melt the nitro finish off an old guitar and then you had to chip it away from the guitar. Do NOT apply to anything with a nitro finish.

I was looking at real estate in Park City Utah the other day. If someone can justify spending $50 million on a "ski cabin", then buy as many guitars as you want. It's o.k.

I don’t think that’s a ladder per say, very likely there was another piece that would’ve created like a staircase ladder. And your buddy was right that was for dolls and our plants and what not that is not a ledge for children to play, the tines of the railing are spaced much too far apart….i describe my illness as “P.A.S” , or Pedal Acquisition Syndrome, i’m a professional bass player, but I started playing guitar again last year bought a telecaster and thanks to guys like you two, I can’t stop buying pedals for it, I have three overdrives three flanges, three phases overdrive preamp Evantide H9 compression and probably four delays at least including a vintage Ibanez AD 80… in fact, yesterday I just had to have an 80s era Japanese made Boss super overdrive, please help.

Honestly i have can oive with 1 electric and 1 acoustic. I go crazy with pedals but i find guitars just sit there if i have a few. I currently have 2 electrics - greysch white falcon, and strandberg salen. Only the salen gets used at the moment

I think if you play at all outside your bedroom in public, one can argue that you need 2 guitars at the absolute lowest level. Obviously this might not be realistic for some people financially but if you have the means I would say it’s ideal to have 2. If something goes wrong you at least have a backup ready to go

The moral of this entire discussion, is who cares what anyone else chooses to spend their money on. It may seem stupid to a whole lot of people, but if it’s not stupid to them, then it’s not stupid.
