One thing i noticed a lot over the years is how seemingly every year drop will put itself in a major controversy with one of it's collaborator(s) without fail. Be it the earlier holy pandas, the holy pandas x, the mt2 debacle, etc, i steer far away from any drop products because the corporation just feels scummy at this point.
Yea as someone that’s newer to the hobby of all the places to get products drop has easily been my least favorite. Rndkbd, kbd fans, kinetic labs, Ashkeebs, Novel keys etc. just seem like way better companies than drop
@@wolf-xf6hf the only thing drop has going for them is the availability of in stock GMK as far as I'm concerned
I still get stuff through drop but not without expensive research or knowing what I'm spending may be a bit of a gamble.
I'm looking hard at the hifi man planar magnetic headphones he-xx4 or whatever they are called. At the same time I recognize they are a "proceed with caution" organization.

I’ll hold my full opinions on clone keycaps, but as a designer, I’ll say this. I get why people buy them, I won’t shame them for doing so. However, the people who evangelize clones and shout about greedy designers from the rooftops are part of the problem. The vast majority of us don’t make enough money to justify doing this full-time. Groupbuy margins are usually razor-thin. The designs the clones are copied from wouldn’t exist at all, if not for the work of fellow hobbyists who were passionate enough to commit time and resources to creating them. Seeing outright clones of something you spent many hours of your spare time on can be very demotivating.

Since your point was all about the clone keycaps, may we have an update on PBT Darling? I came relatively late into the hobby so Darling GB was already over, but I fell in love with it and have been rocking clones for close to 2 years now. I know it's not the same as the original but it's the closest I have to it.
I'd gladly pay retail for your design but not the stupidly inflated aftermarket rates.

Awesome video once again! I absolutely love learning about the history of the keyboard hobby.
Also, I can attest that the Holy Pandas still come with factory lube on the leaf, even though they're advertised as unlubed. Had them on one order and two subsequent batches of replacements 🙄This is why I got myself a batch of YOK Pandas, so that I can somewhat experience the original Holy Panda feel
Props on digging up the Ivan & Redline situations. Most people in the hobby now have no idea about these & they can be considered the OG "keyboard drama" (although I'm sure there were some situations before that, just not as high profile or high dollar amount). Oh also while we're on KB drama, hey Jaxx how's that ice cream machine treating you????????????

Really enjoyed the content and historical context for some of the controversies in the hobby! Seems like those of us who have joined in the last 3 yrs have had it pretty easy with group buys being a lot more reliable (and generally shorter in length at least for keyboards). I entered my first GB in 2021 for a Bubble 75, it got delayed maybe 3 or so months due to COVID among other things. My Mode Sonnet and JRIS65 also had some short (
the group buy model is always been a controversy even outside of mechanical keyboards community. I was active in local hifi/audio gear years ago and there's a huge fiasco like this about IEM group buy to the point it's heavily regulated.

My favourite drama was krepublic vs epomaker and epomaker having to run away with their tale between their legs proved wrong and lairs.

one controversy that I thought was really random was the GMK Taegeukgi "cultural appropriations" thing. I remember it being right in the middle of covid and it seems like people ran out of things to do so they latched on to this (me included).
Another weird controversy was the Rama splitting with Kate situation... I remember there being so much general confusion as to what happened, but I think the community ended up raging on Rama because he wasn't fulfilling the orders on time. (plus other unfavorable business decisions)
Space cables was another one. I forgot much of the details, but I remember there being google docs to expose the owner of the company?

And honestly I was buying a new mechanical keyboard to replace the one I had bought for 15 dollars. It's not that great and sometimes feel uncomfortable but still. It's better than a group buy especially when most of the stuff is outside of our reach😊

There are actual invyr holy pandas available online, and imo they are better than any other type of panda including drop or glorious. I consider the holy panda x to be a sort of variation on the concept of the holy panda and in their own category with certain other switches

hey can you cover the GMK Lavender artisans all mysteriously "going missing from the post office" and the maker dropping off the face of the earth because he is busy with some supposedly really important remote job? Is the teaha holy panda sound test a controversy or nah? I feel like the conclusion to the obsession over that sound test was that the sound was edited since copies of that build don’t even come close to the original sound.

I was part of the PBT Dark GB back then. Sad times man. Things have definitely improved, but the whole GB model needs to go.
Then there was the Zeal/Durock stab drama
Rama was the worst I experienced with group buys. I did have a wait issue with GMK Fuji and Epbt Ramen stop at the same time, it was Rama not posting normal updated and then the whole thing with him and Wilba. All of that turned me off from ever joining one again.

I wasn't paying full atention to the holy panda bit and now all I know is multiple different parties claimed to actually own them and denied the others did. Absolutely amazing.

About clone keycaps… I understand why people buy them. Some sets are hella expensive. But I personally know designers since I work with them in my field and I understand the work and effort that goes into the design process. And it doesn’t feel right to see your design ripped off. I myself have bought clones during my early days, but as I got into the hobby more, I either go for second-hand lightly used original sets, or go for other sets from manufacturers such as Milky Way or PBTfans.

I got into the keyboard game right around the holy panda craze.
My first keyboard was a fjell with some glorious pandas I lubed myself, and they are great! Highly recommend.
I'm looking to transition that board to some "endgame" tactile switches, though. Whatever that will be...

No colorway drama? I remember when I got into the community back in like 2015 that was a big thing, wish I could remember the name of the colorway but I recall the photo of the creator sitting with his leopold and color swatches for his set which borrowed from some terminal colors... classic stuff
