This guy is a hero. 90% of tiny desk concerts sound better that the studio version. There are tens of bands that I will only listen to the Tiny Desk version of their tracks.
@@mistersydster I agree with the oc on alot of performances but anderson.paak isnt one. Personally I like the studio versions of the songs he performed. But I would love to hear songs from ventura in a tiny desk concert
I've been waiting for this! I always find myself admiring the sound quality whenever I'm listening to Tiny Desk. Would it be possible to make more of these videos please? And maybe go more in depth too? I would be very interested to see what you do in the mixing and post production phase!
Josh you're an awesome engineer mate the crispness, quality and dynamic range of your recordings are outstanding. keep it up, have you considered doing another video on the rest of the chain of events into the recording mixing down, ADC etc? I'm sure your fans would be very interested
I think part of the appeal of the Tiny Desk sound is the fact that most of the bands will play very quietly, compared to regular gigs. They will also be much closer to each other and have little or no foldback, forcing them to listen more to each other.
"this one is not", very funny haha. But seriously, NPR and engineer Josh Rogosin you guys represent the best live sound I've never seen, the sound quality is unbelievable. Looks easy but we know there are a lot of knowledges.

I listen a lot of CDs and if I compare Your recordings to CDs or other music, You have much better quality. The sound is perfect. You show how really music should be!
Lovely sound indeed! I guess the players playing softly on low-mid volume amps also helps the sound a lot! It's so refreshing to the ears, makes you want to lean forward into the music in a relaxed way. Thanks for that!
NPR tiny desks are the best concerts ever... and the sound is always amazing; so well done to technicians; you can definitely be proud to produce such shows
Yes, finally the video I've wanted ever since I listened to my very first Tiny Desk Concert! Thanks a bunch for making this, I always loved the sound of your recordings!
Assumming you haven't heard any NPR tiny desk and just purely looking for advice about studio setup and you stumple upon this video, you can tell Josh's advice are on point and working great right from the jingle music.
I cannot believe in short words I told UA-cam the knowledge I need and it brought me straight to this wonderful video that answered so many of my unknown questions. Love
I think the audio on the TDCs are better than any other performances I have heard...even better than some studio albums. Thank you for making the music sound it's best Josh!!!
Super fan from the Tiny Desk Concert sounds here! The quality of the mixes has always been astounding: nicely recorded sources, but also expert ears at work. Congrats!
I suppose if I used an instrument instead of the finger snaps and humming that went with my singing, having these mics would be a nice addition, but I know that Tiny Desk would find the right mic for the need. I listen to the audio feed at work and just marvel at the quality sound regardless of the size and variety of the bands I hear. Keep it up!
Thanks for sharing your engineering techniques. I'd love to see a video about how you guys mix the sound in post-production, I feel like that's part of the reason why the TinyDesk videos have some of the best live sound
The real secret is in the mix / post-production where I use EQ, compression, a little reverb and tons of level riding to get the balance just right for each moment. Everything's then mastered using iZotopes's Ozone.
@@globalsoundconcerts Thanks for the insight! Do you find level-riding to result in a more natural sound (opposed to a heavier compression?) I usually hand-select portions of tracks which are significantly quieter/louder than the average volume and alter the volume through edits, opposed to riding faders. Would you imagine this results in a similar outcome as your method?
Very nice Have discovered some absolute gems here Always top notch audio quality at tiny desk Would have been interesting to see the mixer/console and how you combine inputs physically for the multitrack recording as well as the software used Keep up the excellent work!
i owe this guy a firm handshake
Maybe even two
with a glove or not
Same.

true!
I love Anderson .Paak but man do I wish tiny desk just produced all his music

The sound at tiny desk is outrageously good. It sounds better than some records the artists that play here have made.
