Earning the CCIE: My Story and Tips for Achieving Your Goal

  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert is Cisco’s most prestigious and most difficult certification to achieve, typically requiring years of industry experience and a deep understanding of networking technologies. The lab portion of the exam alone is eight hours long and costs $1,600, and candidates typically spend much more than that on preparatory courses. But professionals with the expert-level CCIE networking certification are in demand, and the value is reflected in significantly higher salaries.
    I passed the CCIE Routing and Switching v5 exam (now called CCIE Enterprise) December 2019. It was the most difficult thing I have ever prepared for. I'm sharing my story, how I got into networking, and how I approached studying for and earning the CCIE. I hope it helps give you an idea of what it takes, and I hope that if you're considering going for this exam, to do it! Its a journey, but 100 percent worth it.
    Welcome to Network Engineer Pro. I'm Rafael, CCIE 64356.

    Absolutely love this! Got my CCNA at community college in Summer 2019, just before transferring to a university for my bachelor's.
    I'm done with my Bachelor's now, but out of everything I ever studied my CCNA was by far my favorite. Looking for a job now where I can use it, and about to begin the process to recertify, as it sadly expires in January. I probably should have begun studying sooner, but I'm fine letting it lapse for a while to take the time to study and pass my exam
    I'm only just now starting my career journey, and there's many steps between here and there (like CCNP), but getting my CCIE is one of my long term career goals

    i did an in person INE boot camp. I didn't feel like it helped me all that much. So you're probably better off with the one you did. I took the V5 twice. Failed twice. Was SOOPER close the 2nd time, January 2020. I rescheduled beginning of March, right before they were changing it. Then COVID and they extended the V5 for a couple months, so I made the mistake of pushing my test back a month. Then a WEEK before my test date, they shut down ALL test centers for a year and a half. And of course they now have SDA/SDWAN so I've been back studying for another year. My next attempt is Feb 7th. Since you made this video in 2022, I was hoping it was the new exam. Wondering why it took you 2 years to make the video after you passed...

    • @NetworkEngineerPro
      @NetworkEngineerPro  2 роки тому +4

      Sweet, thats awesome you started CCNP. The current exam has some automation introduced so maybe you can do a python script. If you are able to, then the thing is how long does it take to do one with python vs a TCL script? Time is not you friend so which ever one you can prep the fastest is gonna be the best choice i think. Once you have the IP's creating a TCL is like 60 seconds max. I havent done one with python so not sure exactly how long it takes.

      -If you're slamming coffee's and labbing for hours make sure to drink enough water. Sounds simple i know but its going to dehydrate you. After a few hours, you might get headaches and difficulty concentrating. This happened to me a few months into my studies and I shoulda mentioned it in the video. You can bring snacks into the lab. You can also take breaks, walk around ect.
      -Throughout the lab, on each router, copy the ip's in "show ip int bri | ex una" paste them into notepad. Incase you're asked to verify reachability later. Prepping a tcl script will take less time.
      - i dont think there is a tshoot portion in the new exam format but if that changes or you need to troubleshoot something heres a mega show command:
      show run | i prefix|access-list|shutdown|security|event|map|filter|list|nat|policy|police|control-plane

      -Speed, speed, speed. If your using secure crt to lab, which is nice because you can config fast and all sessions to devices are on one window in their own tabs. Dont use that, in the lab its putty or one of those crappy free ones that open a separate window for each connection. Get use to labbing large topologies with that, managing all those putty screens, copy and pasting into all those screens. I had a mechanical gaming keyboard in my house, i swapped it for a logitech k120 which is similiar to what is used.
      -If you're asked to configure something but you cant use this, this or that and the only way you remember how to configure it is a way that breaks a restriction.
      Break the restriction. Its better to break a restriction, lose points but get something up. Then to not configure it, still lose points and it affect something later in the exam.
      -I felt what I was asked was clear, no real trickery. I either knew it or i didnt. You dont need a 100 to pass.
      -You might be using these already, but cisco live on demand which is free has great videos about the lab format and alot of the topics. Nick russo's ospf troubeshooting video from 2018 or 2019 is one of the best things i've seen. johnny bass has good videos there and books called "stupid ccie tricks" check them out.
      IF i think of more ill post them for sure. Hope that helps!

    Motivating for sure and great insight. I will be starting CCNA and preparatory studying for OSCP next week and this is the kind of passion and commitment I need to pass these two. I asked for a promotion at my current work, but I am feeling as if there's a glass ceiling situation. Manager fobbed me off saying the progression is currently not a priority for the organisation, but the reality is that this other person that he took in the same position is not able to pass an exam which is the requirement for promotion. Hence, my promotion in the current role has been stopped because of this awful and jealous person. Manager is supporting him out of the way and despite of my hard work and fulfilling the pre-requisites for the promotion, I have been politely told no. Just disappointed and not fair at all. Another factor here is race as well, he's white and I'm not. He's incompetent and still being praised for nothing at all. Whereas, I have done tremendous amounts of work and still no praise at all. So, I have decided to gain qualifications and leave the company.

      @NetworkEngineerPro  Рік тому +2

      Hey Joe, sorry for the delay. I think it's still worth it and will be for a long time. Besides employers finding it valuable. The network fundamentals you learn from it builds an excellent foundation to learning cloud networking. Many companies that go cloud, do it a hybrid model. It's the most popular. Those cloud connections have to connect back on prem to some network device using sub interfaces, VPN's , static routing, BGP stuff like that depending on the type of connections involved. So some of the technologies and protocols will still apply. Some things in the cloud differ but routing tables still exist for example, so having a good networking foundation from a ccna for example for sure helps and is worth it. If you're in a Juniper shop for example then the ccna equivalent of that I'd suggest.

    • @NetworkEngineerPro
      @NetworkEngineerPro  Рік тому +1

      @@walternakatana7603 I know exactly which labs you're talking about I went through them an insane amount of times. I spent weeks on a single protocol in the beginning of my studies but once i had a decent foundation on them I wouldnt spend weeks on them anymore because of exactly what you're saying. I put all the ATC topics on flash cards so I when I select them, they are chosen at random. I would then do multiple randomly selected labs throughout the day and night. So in 1 day i get OSPF feature-x, BGP feature-y, MPLS feature-z. More than 3 but you get the idea. That helped me see hit multiple technologies frequently which helps with forgetting stuff, did that for a while. After that i redid the flash cards with only the really difficult stuff from all the protocols did that for a while too.
      I certainly forgot stuff walking into the lab, i think its impossible to know everything. But the doing multiple random topics really helped. I did the full scale, foundation, mock, ect labs many times too. Once i understood everything about them, i would do them for speed. I'd do those in the morning, Then do random ATC labs in the evening. Same process for Narbik.
