You explain things so we'll and it makes so much sense. I haven't been painting but a couple of years but enjoy it when I have time to do it. I still work full time and I will be 67 in a few months. I have trouble matching my exact color if I need more. I think that is because of my low vision. I have never been able to see well but I won't let that stop me from trying. It may take me longer and I have to get very close but that is ok. I am just glad I can paint and it looks ok. Thank you for sharing these quick tips they help a lot.

You have extremely good color perception. Where you see 10 values, I can only distinguish maybe 6, if I squint. I love your videos because you are so excellent at explaining while you demonstrate. Always helpful! Thanks so much.
One way to develop that value perception is to distinguish between what's in shadow and what's not in shadow. We can usually expect to see up to five value differences in each.

Thank you as ever, Dianne. You mention nomenclature; one part of the spectrum I struggle with is the violets. I was raised to call red violets purple, and blue violet, just violet. It is a small thing but for some reason those two colours have confused me since I was little 😂
Gael, we use the words purple and violet interchangeably. Perhaps we should settle on just one since all the other hue-names work that way. Most of the color wheels and color theorists refer to the color in the spectrum as violet. I'd say choose the word that registers best in your perception, then when you hear the other one, just translate it in your head.
Visualizing the colors might help, too. For example, red-violet sits between red and violet, and blue-violet sits between blue and violet. Substitute the word purple and they still sit in the same place. The English language can often be confusing.

Jill, any time you lighten a color, whether with white or a lighter color, the some of the hue will diminish. That is the nature of mixing color: adding also subtracts. If you're asking about keeping the warmth in a warmer color like orange or red, simply add a little yellow back into it when you add the white.
I love your videos! I have been searching for real art information when I found your channel. I always struggle with color mixing for skin tones from references, would you be able to make a video about that sometime?

So with this example when I apply this method to watercolour, to obtain the right value for the blue compliment instead of being able to use white, would it mean adding a more watery dilution of the blue to create a lighter value compliment before adding to the orange ?

I have one question, and it has nothing to do with the colors haha, it has to do with washing the brushes. What is the cleaning cup you are using? It seems a whole lot more convenient than what I currently have.

It is called a brush washer and is available as a brush washer from most major art supply stores.

I smile at your question because I've been painting all my life, but started seriously studying painting in 1961. You do the math.
"The viewer sees the result" - yep, remember that whenever you're tempted to buy a tube of lapis lazuli for some ridiculous price. It's just PB29 with a smidgen of terre verte added to it.
It also comes at a terrible environmental and socialogical price.
There are many routes to Rome in the color world. It's the results of what we do with it that matters.

@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Absolutely. I mean, if there's a colour that I absolutely WANT to have (quin magenta for example) then I'll buy it. But generally, I like to be a resourceful mixer.

my watercolor paint create mold and its sad, how do i prevent this
Wipe up all the water you can and allow the watercolor palette to dry out before covering it. This is bound to happen in humid environments.

It is a low saturation, dark, transparent red orange.
