    Can't believe I crashed my drone on this trip but at the end of it all, I had an unforgettable experience and met great people. Nothing worthwhile was ever achieved without a bit of adversity. Hope you enjoyed this video, everyone, thank you for watching. 🙏

    In 1976 I traveled on a Greek freighter from S. Africa to New York. The first three days were extremely rough, 30ft waves, we stayed in bed. But after leaving Cape Town it was smooth water, but because of mechanical problems the trip lasted 40 days instead of the 21 scheduled. Ten passengers and a dog, 40 crew, and no entertainment made us be creative. Great memory!

    “Dry cargo” can be container ships but also bulk carriers - iron, ore, grain etc in these giant hoppers. Hair-raising things, as often all loose cargo and in high seas it shifts around and destabilises the vessel and moves the Centre of Mass around and can really stress the hull. A lot of bulks lost in 80’s and 90’s would be through metal failure from destabilising and the ship would literally break apart and vanish quickly with few survivors.

    Nice one Nick, that was a trip. The accommodation was pretty luxurious compared to the ferry I took to the Andamans, which was a bunch of creaky bunk beds all crammed into one large room with lots of people and crying babies, etc. That was great that you got a cabin and the ship wasn't too crowded. And good to have some company as well. So how long did the boat ride take one you finally left the port? I wasn't clear on how many total hours it was.

    • @IndigoTraveller
      @IndigoTraveller  6 років тому +5

      Cheers, Gabe. Yeah, it was relatively luxurious all considering, nice to have the company also. One of the guys on the boat had actually done that Andaman ferry and said it was a bit brutal at times. Once the boat left port, it took about 3 days give or take I think.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos 6 років тому +3

      Three days, wow. What I heard about the Andaman islands ferry at the time (this was in 2006, maybe things have changed) is that there were two ferries. One was newer and one was older and in much worse shape. I was on the older boat. So if you ever happen to do that trip (from Chennai to Port Blair), try to get on the new boat if possible. Or take the old one and it'll be a bit more of an adventure. Anyway have fun...

    Also to prevent drone crashes, remember the drone calibrates itself based on the surface it starts from. So since the ship is almost never on a true level surface, the drone is never calibrated to a level plane.

    I know what you mean about people getting close on an open sea ferry. I took a ferry up the Inside Passage from Prince Rupert, BC, to Juneau, AK, and we passengers got close to each other in a short period of time. Really cool. People get relaxed and social on a long ferry ride.

    Super lucky to have your drone back with you. I build my own drones (btw, I am an aeromodeller since my pre-teen years) and I know how these modern drones work. They are the most sophisticated, automated flying equipment which can surprise newbies with expensive outcomes. Crashing a drone/aeromodel is part of the learning curve, so do not be so upset, but just think in every aspect before you do. The best of the fliers have crashed many times, and still crash often too. I don't know, but I just love the vans and recently I bought myself one. Will be uploading its the rebuild series on my channel soon, and hope to share my travel stories too, but will be short drives as it is a taxi van at the moment. Let's see how it goes. And great video as always :)

    The only person in my family who traveled as a passenger on cargo ships was my father who traveled to England running the U-Boat gauntlet and then past coastal patrol bombers when they got closer to England. Then across the channel to Normandy where there was no dock and had to take a landing barge to shore. The landing barge was returning from the beaches and had wounded aboard so the deck was slick with water and blood. The return trip next year was much more relaxing. You trip was relaxing and boring which is a good thing. Excitement on a ship often means things have gone horribly wrong.

  • @kennethbolton951

    A boat is a small to mid-sized vessel, which has much lesser cargo carrying capability as compared to a ship. Ships are specifically made to carry cargo or passengers or boats, whereas boat is a generic term used for a variety of water crafts. Mainly boats are used for recreational purposes, fishing, or ferry people.

      It seemed more like a ferry than a cargo ship. It was a lot like the ferry I took on the Alaska Marine Highway System from Prince Rupert, BC, to Juneau, AK. It had a hull that carried cars and RVs, with a lot of dedicated floor and cabin space for civilian passengers. I would have expected to see shipping containers if it were cargo ship. I also would be interested to know how much the Caspian ferry cost. The AMHS trip cost me maybe $500 with a car and a cabin in March, but that was back in 2008.

I moved over to NZ from UK about 8 months ago to get a job and start saving some money up to go travel India and South East Asia. My intentions were to start something similar to the channel you've got here; this was before I found your channel, not trying to rip you off or anything. It was encouraging to see someone on UA-cam having success in a similar area that I want to start in. How do you get a berth on a cargo ship in the Caspian Sea? I mean, seriously. Is there a clearinghouse for travelers, a place to search these things?

    This man is flustered about chipping the prop on his drone. I'm at the point where I just carry a bag of extra props and I even broke the frame recently.

    You are very lucky you didn't loose the drone on that ship!
    I was surprised when you mentioned at the beginning you want to try it. A red alert flashed in my mind immediately thinking there must be many factors to take into consideration before you attempt something like this. I feel sad for Belus, he must have been very disappointed :(

    The Caspian Sea is totally landlocked. How do they get ships on it? I assume someone has a special ship yard to make the ships on the sea?

    Much cheaper she said.
