You only live once. People might say things like I’m being unambitious or that this is a choice I’ll regret later in life. But I don’t think so. I feel like to a certain extent, in terms of those conventional beliefs and ways of thinking about success, I have achieved, and their beliefs were false promises, because my success didn’t actually make me happy. As to whether or not I’ll be regretting my current path later in life, I guess time will tell. - 8:54

I think striving is not necessary a bad thing per se. Striving for material goods won't make people "happy" in the long term for sure. Striving to succeed in something they are interested in doing (like starting a F&B business to create the most delicious X etc...) and seeing customer satisfaction can be rewarding and may create long term "happiness". It comes down to the motivation for why you want to strive.

I stopped working full-time at 35. Today I work only four days a week, 4 to 5 hours a day and take long holidays. Have spent years travelling around the world. Yes, people say all sorts of things to me. And I understand their point and that it is the hardworking people and the ones who obsess over money who keep the world from stopping. I do not speak bad of them because they are necessary to a functioning society. Imagine if all doctors in America (or in Singapore for that matter) decided to quit their jobs when their portfolios reached $1 million. Or if Bill Gates decided to close down Microsoft. Etc., etc. What would happen? It would be a disaster. However, I do not want their lives, for all the luxuries they can afford. Why buy a $50K car and be stuck in traffic every day when you can get a $5000 one and travel from country to country? Why buy a house with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms if it's just you and your dog and be tied to a 30-year mortgage? Are you going to sleep every night in a different bedroom and shower in a different bathroom every morning? I'd rather sleep in a beach hut one night and in a mountain cabin the next. But at the end of the day what matters it what makes you happy.

I truly agree with you Jean. After working 32 years I finally decided to retire at 55. However, I must clarify that sometimes you can’t make your choice and one has to live for someone . I mean dependence. Fortunately , I could as my financial savings and planning have made able to realise that dream of retiring early . Society here in Singapore warrants u to work and slog till 70 on the pretext that if you don’t work you would lose your sanity faster , even your life span when the truth can be the opposite .

Your video is soooo inspiring! As a matter of fact, i am forced to leave the company as they offer staff because of the current oil price.
I was lost. Eventhough i hate going to office! I hate the traffic! I hate the people! I hate the management! And i got a slight thought that i am good and satisfied with what i have now.
But the reality when i truly leave the company is different. Coz i think being able to stay in the company is the definition of success. That is what everybody thinks.
Before even watching ur video, i had downsize my lifestyle. Though i am not a big spender, just once a while, a lot of my salary was given as a charity to my family members and others. Other then that, i just have small house and normal car, not the luxury one. I don't like shopping. But i do develop the habits of buying unnecessary stuff once in a blue moon. Maybe once in 5 months?
I was just lost as i still cant get any job offer. I am soooo lost! I am trying to make sense of my situation. But ur video really open my eyes. That i still have enough to make it through every day. I just need a plan where i should be more prudent. Like u said in ur video, u dont really need a lot in this life, and peoples perceptions are not important as long as u are happy!
I also learned somewhere that if u do good and obey god, god will make it enough for u. Kind of relatable to what u said which is to behave sensibly, then we can still make ends meet. This video really opens up a lot of things. I love it! Especially when i ask god i want to be successful. But the definition of successful is so subjective like u said!
Also regarding having faith that we will make ends meet eventhough we dont have big monthly salary!
There are a lot of impressive points in ur video. I truly love it! It really opens up my mind and triggered me to think differently about my situation.

We all make choices in our life. Some turn out to be good or bad. However, there is no need to regret. We just have to learn from it and move on. I remember when I left my company and came to study in US when i was 29yo. It was not easy but I made it and now I am a USA Citizen. This is what I chose to be. You have to take in charge of what you want in life and no one can or will do it for you. You are in fact richer than most people who have lots of money. I know! Keep up the good work and be happy as you can.

I know going to the US and making citizenship is a very arduous n long challenge so kudos for that! have a couple of friends from SG doing the same thing and it seems like a bit of a wait n hope. It just surprises me how many people out there in fact choose not to take risks and make changes even though they're not happy. They don't seem to realise that inaction in itself is a choice.

I share the same beliefs, but you have verbalised them in such an articulate way :)
I have lots of friends who keep putting up with highly stressful jobs and workplaces that take advantage of them and don't even appreciate them. I have advised them on several occasions that they perhaps should consider stepping down by getting a job that is still in their field of expertise but not so demanding. The common response they give me is always 'I can't earn less'. They don't really care about status, but they are fixated on this idea that earning less is not possible, or that it indicates a regress, or they have taken on financial responsibilities for others like family members that they don't have the courage to say no to. I just finished listening to a book called 'The courage to be disliked' and it finally strikes me that many people are the way they are because they would rather live a stressful life, or not be honest to themselves than gathering the courage to change, to say no, to get out of their comfort zone, to call out when someone has done them wrong (including demanding parents). So yeah, I've stopped giving advice to them now and I just tell them that obviously the life that they complain about must still have something in it for them.

My “downsizing” was mostly forced upon me by divorce. In the beginning it was really hard to get used to a “reduced” life style but I wasn’t ready to just go out and buy a new life either. I am very surprised at how little you really need to live well. Very few things bring really happiness to my life. Good food, exercise, good sleep, music and enjoyable hobbies.

Wow! I just happen to stumble on your channel and I am already hooked with your very gentle, kind, Loving voice. I am in love with your content already and I totally agree living humbly and simply is truly the correct path to utter happiness because It makes you grounded and let's you know what really is our reason to be here, to be alive and that is to connect with the people around us and touching their lives in our own little way. I admire your goal dear. I so love how you explain that having much more is not really the best way to be happy. Because so much of the opposite of what you are sharing is found in the internet specially in UA-cam on how to be rich, how to have more....
I am truly grateful the universe attracted me to your channel.
You have a new follower from the Philippines.🥰♥️

Thanks Aidelei, that’s a beautiful name btw! I think more is just an endless well of desire and if we start going down that path it’s a life of never ending strife to feed that more. I’m lucky that I derive the most and truest happiness from the simplest things in my life - my parents, husband and dogs, my painting and surfing, my creations like the videos and the conversations they spark. Wish u simple happiness too 🌻🦋

There’s many factors to this such as having a partner that could support your lifestyle…but in general frugality for peace is worth more for some ppl but keep in mind not everyone does this on a solo basis sometimes they have support so it’s best to assess your support system before going into this lifestyle and whether if hard times hit if you’d be able to cope even without a support system.

Couldn't have said it better. Thanks for sharing Jean. Family still think's I am crazy for deciding to move to the Philippines and live life in the provincial area. We just came back from a 3 week vacation + running errands, with my in laws in the Philippines and we are back in Singapore to finish our work contracts with our respective healthcare institutions before fully relocating.. As much as I am grateful to Singapore, as a Singaporean, I became more sensitive to that same "Rush" & "More is Better" culture, which never really sat well in my soul.

Your approach to life is a very reasonable one. You are lucky, that you thought about it so early on. The time you started saving for such an early retirement was also economically a very good timing. I think the coming years it will be much harder to achieve this even if one wants. In order to retire early one needs lifesavings and a few years to accumulate them. Its nice to see that you achieved this and you can be proud for having such a broad view towards society and your own life. Congratulations! ☺ I'm a year older than you and will probably need another 10 years to reach this point. All the best and greetings from Germany! 🍀

hi S N, thanks for leaving such a sincere note and sharing about your situation. Guess you're sitting on the fence of scaling back your lifestyle to be happier perhaps? I share about my life and experiences here but truth is people who have done the same as me are plentiful everywhere - it seems to hv worked out for a lot of people they're just mostly quiet about it haha! I love my life now in Bali. Every day feels like a precious drop of happiness. I have insecurities about things changing! thats how happy i feel i guess. I def believe ppl shd try things out instead of spending their lives wondering. Anyway if i wanted to u turn at any point even now after 10 years i feel i can, so there are always options, don't worry about being driven down a road of no return.

Very well said, every year I travel over to Asia different countries and I always love it when I get to my destinations wherever that might be and I always settle down for the easy life and everything that you’re saying and I can totally relate, my life is better I’m healthier no stress no nothing but pure relaxation and enjoyment and the longer I’m there the more I say to myself I wish I knew about this along time ago, it is so easy to get caught up in the fast paced life of the world or even your own culture/country,,,, it is sad that we have brought ourselves to this type of life, the fast-paced life,,, when I was young I used to feel like I think majority of everyone feels, have to make the money, have to be on top, have to make something of my life, have the cars the boats the nice house everything but as you age I believe that’s when you start to find out about life and things. It was a pleasure watching your video for the first time, you now have a new subscriber, keep up the good work.

Being frugal and conscious about money while living in high cost SG, taught me how to repair my washer, my car and to fully servicing my Aircon etc. I ever have a Canadian friend in SG quoted in 2008, "how come the locals (SG) here any problem will just whip out the phone for services instead of hands on approach?" I asked, "what happen to your tyre during winter?” And he instantly replied, "of cos I change them myself." His quote changed my perspective of money & the living cost in SG.

I think you are making the right decisions about your life. You only live once is so true, so the best thing one can do is try and make the best decisions. With that, making the best decisions for you and your family happiness. Drowning in debt is one of the worse places to be in life. It keeps you on the Ferris wheel and never able to get off, making a person feel a huge burden on the shoulders, leading to unhappiness.
