You only live once. People might say things like I’m being unambitious or that this is a choice I’ll regret later in life. But I don’t think so. I feel like to a certain extent, in terms of those conventional beliefs and ways of thinking about success, I have achieved, and their beliefs were false promises, because my success didn’t actually make me happy. As to whether or not I’ll be regretting my current path later in life, I guess time will tell. - 8:54
we only die once, we live everyday. Have the same mind set, however not quite there yet. Even moving to other state, stil need some capital, not as easy as u said.
I think striving is not necessary a bad thing per se. Striving for material goods won't make people "happy" in the long term for sure. Striving to succeed in something they are interested in doing (like starting a F&B business to create the most delicious X etc...) and seeing customer satisfaction can be rewarding and may create long term "happiness". It comes down to the motivation for why you want to strive.
I stopped working full-time at 35. Today I work only four days a week, 4 to 5 hours a day and take long holidays. Have spent years travelling around the world. Yes, people say all sorts of things to me. And I understand their point and that it is the hardworking people and the ones who obsess over money who keep the world from stopping. I do not speak bad of them because they are necessary to a functioning society. Imagine if all doctors in America (or in Singapore for that matter) decided to quit their jobs when their portfolios reached $1 million. Or if Bill Gates decided to close down Microsoft. Etc., etc. What would happen? It would be a disaster. However, I do not want their lives, for all the luxuries they can afford. Why buy a $50K car and be stuck in traffic every day when you can get a $5000 one and travel from country to country? Why buy a house with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms if it's just you and your dog and be tied to a 30-year mortgage? Are you going to sleep every night in a different bedroom and shower in a different bathroom every morning? I'd rather sleep in a beach hut one night and in a mountain cabin the next. But at the end of the day what matters it what makes you happy.
Thank you very much for reminding us to live and not to only exist..My daughter and i gave up our jobs in America and sold everything 3 years ago.We have traveled to19 countries and counting. We are currently live in Panama with a salary of $10.00 per hour.We have not bought any clothes since 2019.Central America are linked together by bus.We take the bus instead of flying. We spent our days hike and doing everything together..We are so bless to recognize that consumerism was eating us alive. We lived in Bali, Vietnam, Malaysia South Korea and more.
I’m currently leaving an abusive relationship. I have decided to live a frugal life on my own is preferable to putting up with torment. I want to be happy in myself 🙏
@@Grrrrrrr123 👍👍👍👍. All the best to you. I wish you much strength. No human being should stay in a toxic relationship. I went no contact many years ago with some of my biological family. It was very difficult at the beginning, but later as time went by I healed and am so glad that I left them.
I am a lawyer from London. I also quit. But only after a burnout. I watch your videos on days I question my choice. Thank you for the inspiration. Like you, I feel so much happier. I now spend my time with my teenager and volunteering for charity.
oh don't worry sweetie. I think it took me about 6 years or so before i stopped ever thinking "oh maybe i should u turn and go back". And all for the wrong reasons i think. The biggest of all being financial security cos i always felt the job was much more stable. But the pandemic blew that thought finally out of the window lol. Spending time w ur kid and volunteering sounds like stuff you'll look back on and find joy and meaning in at the end of our days. U go girl.
Ooh so fun!! One of my bucket list dreams is van life eventually!! Not sure I’ll get around to it tho it seems more like a Western Europe or US kinda thing
Hi great video. I left my well paid job at 42 it was making me ill. Went part time working in a call center, massive drop in money, but it was well worth it for my own well-being. I’m now 56 still working part time, it was the best decision I ever made. Picking my children up from school walking them home absolutely amazing. Priceless.
You're very wise and clearly articulated a lot of things after many years' experience on the planet I've come to understand instinctively. This mindset can be summed up in the phrase: The things we collect, we stop owning them and they start owning us. Freedom is letting go of chasing status and material things.
I truly agree with you Jean. After working 32 years I finally decided to retire at 55. However, I must clarify that sometimes you can’t make your choice and one has to live for someone . I mean dependence. Fortunately , I could as my financial savings and planning have made able to realise that dream of retiring early . Society here in Singapore warrants u to work and slog till 70 on the pretext that if you don’t work you would lose your sanity faster , even your life span when the truth can be the opposite .
Yay for u Krell Dragon! Actually we see on our life path a lot of ppl who hv made it even tho they bring their kids w them, mostly caucasians of course, that being a brave n liberal step to take, but it also shows that with proper long term planning it is still possible to cover dependents also, so that’s why ppl shd know about this kinda thinking earlier, but yes of course it’s rather anti SG establishment. They need labourers to work the SG machine!
We all make choices in our life. Some turn out to be good or bad. However, there is no need to regret. We just have to learn from it and move on. I remember when I left my company and came to study in US when i was 29yo. It was not easy but I made it and now I am a USA Citizen. This is what I chose to be. You have to take in charge of what you want in life and no one can or will do it for you. You are in fact richer than most people who have lots of money. I know! Keep up the good work and be happy as you can.
Its so true, and you obviously are a brave soul and believe in shaping your own life. I know going to the US and making citizenship is a very arduous n long challenge so kudos for that! have a couple of friends from SG doing the same thing and it seems like a bit of a wait n hope. It just surprises me how many people out there in fact choose not to take risks and make changes even though they're not happy. They don't seem to realise that inaction in itself is a choice.
@@JeanVoronkova Inaction is a choice, very true comment Jean. Thanks for reminding us, hope you had a wonderful time with your parents, special memories 💯
@@JeanVoronkova Yes Jean, bet You miss them, but fortunately you all had a very special & lovely time, so there are many precious memories, there forever. Take good care of You All 💯😊
Your video is soooo inspiring! As a matter of fact, i am forced to leave the company as they offer staff because of the current oil price. I was lost. Eventhough i hate going to office! I hate the traffic! I hate the people! I hate the management! And i got a slight thought that i am good and satisfied with what i have now. But the reality when i truly leave the company is different. Coz i think being able to stay in the company is the definition of success. That is what everybody thinks. Before even watching ur video, i had downsize my lifestyle. Though i am not a big spender, just once a while, a lot of my salary was given as a charity to my family members and others. Other then that, i just have small house and normal car, not the luxury one. I don't like shopping. But i do develop the habits of buying unnecessary stuff once in a blue moon. Maybe once in 5 months? I was just lost as i still cant get any job offer. I am soooo lost! I am trying to make sense of my situation. But ur video really open my eyes. That i still have enough to make it through every day. I just need a plan where i should be more prudent. Like u said in ur video, u dont really need a lot in this life, and peoples perceptions are not important as long as u are happy! I also learned somewhere that if u do good and obey god, god will make it enough for u. Kind of relatable to what u said which is to behave sensibly, then we can still make ends meet. This video really opens up a lot of things. I love it! Especially when i ask god i want to be successful. But the definition of successful is so subjective like u said! Also regarding having faith that we will make ends meet eventhough we dont have big monthly salary! There are a lot of impressive points in ur video. I truly love it! It really opens up my mind and triggered me to think differently about my situation.
Just got back from a trip in San Francisco. At 29, I saw so many older folks in the streets and mall and tourist places and public transportation immensely stressed out and mentally disturbed. The amount of money they are making doesn’t justify that trade off
My wife and I live frugally in Vancouver Canada. Though it is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live, we geo arbitraged to the cheapest area of the city. We live frugally and have been both able to work part time since our 20s. I really like the mentality that you are encouraging. It really does make people happier.
As I look back on my life the most important thing I wish I had spend more time with family. No one at the end of life will say " I wish I had worked more".....family & Travel 👍
There’s many factors to this such as having a partner that could support your lifestyle…but in general frugality for peace is worth more for some ppl but keep in mind not everyone does this on a solo basis sometimes they have support so it’s best to assess your support system before going into this lifestyle and whether if hard times hit if you’d be able to cope even without a support system.
My “downsizing” was mostly forced upon me by divorce. In the beginning it was really hard to get used to a “reduced” life style but I wasn’t ready to just go out and buy a new life either. I am very surprised at how little you really need to live well. Very few things bring really happiness to my life. Good food, exercise, good sleep, music and enjoyable hobbies. I’m not saying I’ll never own my own home again (I like the security) but I don’t think I’ll put the same emotional investment into it.
I left corporate life in Australia and relocated to Indonesia🇮🇩. My life is simple personified. I'm relaxed living a simplistic life. I don't even own a watch. Love this video... I'm free of a materialistic life, but I live well and can travel where and when I want.
Really excellent points - love that you encourage questioning what society defines as “success”, “ambition” or a “meaningful life”. Your point about the kind of meaning that’s attributed to the term YOLO summed it up incredibly well and certainly makes one question why it should be considered unambitious at all to make conscious choices that align with your values and beliefs!
TQ for your sharing Jean. I believe. I retired from job employment @ 40. A paradigm shift away from the old matrics came timely for me & my family. It was tough the 1st 4 yrs but, not anymore. Living a life filled with gratitude matters. Since 2015, i spend my time educating youth about effective wealth planning & volunteering for charity. Will be heading to Bali in October soon to catch up with old friends. Peace be with you always.🥰
Well done Eddy and thanks for being brave and then sharing your story here cos there are just so many cynics! Love that you fill your days now w contributions to others too 👏🏻
Finally I hear this from someone brave to walk the path and share the joy that comes from making less money and live simply! I had similar thoughts for long time and struggled if i would regret if i do that. Your video is inspiring and i so want to visit you in Bali one day (am 🇮🇩 lol). Happy to hear you have been doing well up to this day. God bless you!
Awesome belief and philosophy of life. There is nothing right or wrong in life esp when everyone says its right it may be wrong and vice versa. Choosing your version of life and way of living that gives you happiness is key to making your life count. Well done !
If you invest your money while downsizing your life, you can actually have double the benefits that you had: live easily with less, while having morr and more to spend just in case. Best scenario.
completely agree, and we do invest, that's how i can do this early retirement thing in bali now - cos of the passive income we have scraped together that's just enough. We got lucky! now saving whilst living simply n hoping to build more investments long term...
Couldn't have said it better. Thanks for sharing Jean. Family still think's I am crazy for deciding to move to the Philippines and live life in the provincial area. We just came back from a 3 week vacation + running errands, with my in laws in the Philippines and we are back in Singapore to finish our work contracts with our respective healthcare institutions before fully relocating.. As much as I am grateful to Singapore, as a Singaporean, I became more sensitive to that same "Rush" & "More is Better" culture, which never really sat well in my soul.
I share the same beliefs, but you have verbalised them in such an articulate way :) I have lots of friends who keep putting up with highly stressful jobs and workplaces that take advantage of them and don't even appreciate them. I have advised them on several occasions that they perhaps should consider stepping down by getting a job that is still in their field of expertise but not so demanding. The common response they give me is always 'I can't earn less'. They don't really care about status, but they are fixated on this idea that earning less is not possible, or that it indicates a regress, or they have taken on financial responsibilities for others like family members that they don't have the courage to say no to. I just finished listening to a book called 'The courage to be disliked' and it finally strikes me that many people are the way they are because they would rather live a stressful life, or not be honest to themselves than gathering the courage to change, to say no, to get out of their comfort zone, to call out when someone has done them wrong (including demanding parents). So yeah, I've stopped giving advice to them now and I just tell them that obviously the life that they complain about must still have something in it for them.
hey u! thanks a lot for the sharing. I always look forward to your comments actually cos its stuff that generally really resonates or that i learn something from too. I came acros sthe book The Courage to be Disliked too and i was planning to get around to that soon !!! was it good?!
yeah... sometimes people kinda enjoy their own quandary... or the fix they have worked themselves into. life is always a choice. They're kinda choosing to stay put and just waste time complaining. Ok lah whatever works for them. Ultimately you're right - they must be happy in their own ways!
@@JeanVoronkova I recommend it and I think it's better to listen to the audio version coz the book is like a conversation between a younger person and an old man. The title doesn't really communicate its content that well (courage to be disliked), but it all comes together as you go further and further into the book :)
Agree! Was just paddling in the surf today - it was too windy n it wasn’t very good - but I was just super grateful to be there, under the blue sky, in the clear waters, enjoying the sun. Grateful!
Thank you Jean. My wife and I are debating making a big change in our lives. After 30 years in the rat race we are looking at simplifying our lives, downsizing, and changing our mindset on what's important in life. We are both in our mid 50's burnt out on our jobs, knowing that if we take the leap we will also have to change our mindset of spending and lifestyles. Your video adds thought and assurance to helping us take the leap. Wishing you peace and happiness.
Hi Jean, having just discovered this video and learning that you made this change to your life at a much younger age (seems we're the same age) is inspiring. I've currently stepped away from my career as a teacher in international schools and enjoying time out in SE Asia whilst I reimagine exciting projects to work on as a nomad. The simplicity, the happiness, the time, it outweighs the earnings. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and being an inspiration for others.
Thanks for sharing the pros and cons and for talking me down from making for me a major purchase that I dont need. I have decided that freedom is more important than the thing I was thinking about buying.
not all expensive things are "not worth it" but u shd be weighing it up against the potential freedom the finances can bring in exchange yeah - that's how mostly i judge my spending too these days, and it makes me happier overall and more content :)
Attachment and expectation are the roots of unhappiness. Less is truly more. You can explore the furthest reaches of your mind and still remain completely dissatisfied. The ancient Stoics and Buddha and more recently Thoreau have shown how little we need. You live everyday and not only once. Finding joy in missing out (JOMO) is a true sign of taming one's wandering mind. -thread lightly.
Wow! I just happen to stumble on your channel and I am already hooked with your very gentle, kind, Loving voice. I am in love with your content already and I totally agree living humbly and simply is truly the correct path to utter happiness because It makes you grounded and let's you know what really is our reason to be here, to be alive and that is to connect with the people around us and touching their lives in our own little way. I admire your goal dear. I so love how you explain that having much more is not really the best way to be happy. Because so much of the opposite of what you are sharing is found in the internet specially in UA-cam on how to be rich, how to have more.... I am truly grateful the universe attracted me to your channel. You have a new follower from the Philippines.🥰♥️
Thanks Aidelei, that’s a beautiful name btw! I think more is just an endless well of desire and if we start going down that path it’s a life of never ending strife to feed that more. I’m lucky that I derive the most and truest happiness from the simplest things in my life - my parents, husband and dogs, my painting and surfing, my creations like the videos and the conversations they spark. Wish u simple happiness too 🌻🦋
Oooh! You’ve just appeared on my feed and this subject is one that’s really taking hold with me. I’m close to retirement anyway, and wondering how I can thrive ( not survive which was my first thought!) without income in UK . Very inspired by several content creator’s here on YT - and now you too -subbed!
When you said “feeling grounded and connected to people around me”…that resonated….hopefully this thinking spreads ….thank you for sharing your life lessons
I think you are making the right decisions about your life. You only live once is so true, so the best thing one can do is try and make the best decisions. With that, making the best decisions for you and your family happiness. Drowning in debt is one of the worse places to be in life. It keeps you on the Ferris wheel and never able to get off, making a person feel a huge burden on the shoulders, leading to unhappiness. You are doing all the right things in life. Love your vlogs.
Very well said, every year I travel over to Asia different countries and I always love it when I get to my destinations wherever that might be and I always settle down for the easy life and everything that you’re saying and I can totally relate, my life is better I’m healthier no stress no nothing but pure relaxation and enjoyment and the longer I’m there the more I say to myself I wish I knew about this along time ago, it is so easy to get caught up in the fast paced life of the world or even your own culture/country,,,, it is sad that we have brought ourselves to this type of life, the fast-paced life,,, when I was young I used to feel like I think majority of everyone feels, have to make the money, have to be on top, have to make something of my life, have the cars the boats the nice house everything but as you age I believe that’s when you start to find out about life and things. It was a pleasure watching your video for the first time, you now have a new subscriber, keep up the good work.
I am from sg too. Sync with your thought. Simple, happy, less stress and healthy life is more important. Really like the way u present, simple and clear.
Bravo. You a one in millions. You are certainly on the right path. Trust me, do not ever sway away from your revelation. Take care, and all the very best always. Warmest regards.
You don't have to answer people to what you want.. Happiness is yours...Either you're successful or a failure it doesn't really matter to the world. They have their own worries, stresses & anxieties to deal with.
Hi Jean, I have seen a few of Your videos and subscribed. You are inspiring a lot of people sitting on the fence including me. Minimalism is the way to go to avoid everyday stress and corporate rat race. Hope you are living life in Bali and congrats.
hi S N, thanks for leaving such a sincere note and sharing about your situation. Guess you're sitting on the fence of scaling back your lifestyle to be happier perhaps? I share about my life and experiences here but truth is people who have done the same as me are plentiful everywhere - it seems to hv worked out for a lot of people they're just mostly quiet about it haha! I love my life now in Bali. Every day feels like a precious drop of happiness. I have insecurities about things changing! thats how happy i feel i guess. I def believe ppl shd try things out instead of spending their lives wondering. Anyway if i wanted to u turn at any point even now after 10 years i feel i can, so there are always options, don't worry about being driven down a road of no return.
That’s correct Jean, leaving work and live a simple but happier life where I would loose 50% of net income from current employment. I should definitely try it as you suggested. Thanks for inspiring us.
Being frugal and conscious about money while living in high cost SG, taught me how to repair my washer, my car and to fully servicing my Aircon etc. I ever have a Canadian friend in SG quoted in 2008, "how come the locals (SG) here any problem will just whip out the phone for services instead of hands on approach?" I asked, "what happen to your tyre during winter?” And he instantly replied, "of cos I change them myself." His quote changed my perspective of money & the living cost in SG. I would choose to seek life rather then letting life seeking who I truly am. Thanks for your video. You let me realized that I'm not an alien in my own (busy & expensive) world.
oooh totally agree! Generally struggling to survive overseas by myself last 10 years also made me realise that i am a genius in pushing paper and research n the like but I'm completely useless in real life cos we outsource everything. We Singaporeans live in a rarefied universe right haha. Thank god the hubs can resolve most stuff at home by himself.
Your approach to life is a very reasonable one. You are lucky, that you thought about it so early on. The time you started saving for such an early retirement was also economically a very good timing. I think the coming years it will be much harder to achieve this even if one wants. In order to retire early one needs lifesavings and a few years to accumulate them. Its nice to see that you achieved this and you can be proud for having such a broad view towards society and your own life. Congratulations! ☺ I'm a year older than you and will probably need another 10 years to reach this point. All the best and greetings from Germany! 🍀
Yes Jean, a good little talk, thanks 👴👍. This same approach worked well for me, as you know; I ‘dropped out’, 12 years ago, worked out just fine so far. 🙋♂️ !
actually i didn't know! care to share your story so far? u look like you're still doing very well and comfortable w the wifey n holidays in castles n all!
@@JeanVoronkova Yup !! I resigned from a great teaching post 👨🎓🏢🙋 in 2010. That’s amazing! I knew u were a teacher but missed the gardening biz bit, well done! I think both r great professions but this turn in life sounds like it worked out really well for u n explains the lovely videos you do w the birds and the greenery! Nice nice, keep it up Don.
just discovered your channel. you speak to my soul! Hug from a 40yr old surfer and scuba diver (still feeling like 25, but worried about life passing by and me not living the life I want/need) from zürich wanting to go and live by the ocean away from the consumerist society. Had a massive mid-life crisis last couple years because my job and life here made me depressed, sitting in the office the whole day doing stupid, meaningless marketing nonsense to fuel pointless consumerist society. it's all because the system since early age groomed us to become slaves of the capitalist society and fit into this system to fuel it. It took me so long to wake up I and I feel so overwhelmed and scared by not knowing how to get out of the rat race and creat the life I want
ooh im so sorry to hear about this... i remember feeling that exact same way while wanting to just go out n surf on weekdays... sucks. It is scary though but we all had to start somewhere. For you it could be now.
@@JeanVoronkova I know you felt exactly the same way. Only people like us know how that truly feels (:) Am trying to research about how to make it happen but still very lost at the moment. you are giving me hope that it is possible. Do you have a video on what you guys did exactly to transition to this life? I of course know your story about leaving your lawyer job, training to be a surf, yoga and zumba teacher and opening your own surf school. How was your husband's journey? What type of property did you buy? Is it in Bali? How much are you making from it per month? Would greatly appreciate some insights on that from you!
@@deadstock82 She has some videos on UA-cam that you can watch. But this way of life is not for everyone. Don't quit your day job, 90% of people have to work. She is also working in her own way like the UA-cam channel. It's just more aligned with what she wants.
I am to much stressing about money and achievements in life while having kids. This makes me difficult to connect with my kids and hubby. So enough now, I would like to focus on the most important things. I know I can break the cycle. Thank you for your honest and great videos.
i love all your videos Jean!....being in the rat race, often make me lose the sense of life and happiness....money does not seem to be enuf all the time....it's true that money really cannot buy happiness...watching your videos, makes me ponder and STOP for at least awhile to appreciate my life even more.
Jean, you really fast and early to understand meaning and purposeful of live, agreed, is not lot of money and fame, simple, happy and contentment with peace of mind is ultimate. Excellent and brave decision!! 👍
finally,i found this channel.there is a thought in my mind always that people could live with less money but should live simply.i cant able to explain it even in myself but now.this is the best explanation for it.😊😊 thank you for this great video.u dont know how big this video of yours impact my values and beliefs.i know, lots of people will not understand my personal choice but its ok as long as im happy,stress-free and contented.thank you so much.❤️
Keep doing you. You are glowing. Happiness is the real success and it varies from person to person. That's my goal too , to retire early and enjoy life as we're meant too. Not get stuck with consumerism. You just rekindled my practical side. This has been real. :)
This is refreshing. I've never seen in my lifetime so many people striving to be rich as if being rich equals success. Women go to work when they could stay home and love their kids. They have traded their kids for money. They could as a couple get a cheaper house and cars and have a close knit family. Amen don't let the world tell you what success is cause they don't know.
Congratulations of your decision to downsize and live a simpler life. The process of simplifying is definitely not simple but in the end, you feel liberated, lighter and you have less worries. 🙂
The world improves on growth. People need to be constructive to contribute GDP. By working you contribute to the economic well being of your business, your colleagues, your customer and supplier, your country and the entire ecosystem and the world economy. If people think alike and quit, then we go into recession with negative GDP growth and everybody suffer. Think twice before you quit and have no money, no income, no contribution to the economy and the world and can’t help anyone not even yourself in times of medical emergencies.
I have a friend who has luxury cars parked at home ( you can only drive one at a time 😂 ) but paying car loans that’s almost SGD$2.5k per car per mth. Stays in a big house that he only sleeps in during the night ( someone got to bring food on the table with all those huge commitments 😂 ). I asked him today, are you happy? He looked at me and paused for a moment. And I told him, yeah… I thought so. I told him that there’s no limit to what you can or want to own but there’s a limit to what you need to get by.
Terrific video! Newer videos on simple living, including living on a smaller income, are hard to find lately. Videos using the phrase Voluntary Simplicity seemed to have peaked 10 to 20 years ago.
Jean, I just love listening to you. You are making a difference in my life at a time when I need it most. Thank you . I can’t express my gratitude enough.
Nice Jean I love you positive energy,, I did the move relocated to Colombia 🇨🇴 now I have more time enjoy my life with wife. And relax.. Welcome to Medellin if you ever want to visit Colombia..
nice! Colombia!! That really inspires me it just already sounds so exotic. I haven't had the chance to visit South Am yet! I think it's beautiful over there!
It is all about the balance between life of earning (work) and life of relaxing (life). Accomplistionments and self development are mile stones in every personal life. You still have your successes but you said my success, referring to your previous job, were not fulfilling. Probably the job or the study choice was not the right one. You can always choose to work voluntary to serve the community and be part of this living through contribution if you do not like the earning of money concept. You can earn a position, reputation, honoring etc. You can leave a legacy that once you die, the world will thank you for and remember you. Nobody chooses for just 'life', and no one chooses for just 'work'. We need both and both must be balanced.
I know of a classmate who retired, and he and his wife are surfing every day in Hawaii. Some do it earlier, some do it later. He bought him a camera, and is posting pictures for everyone to see. He is living the life in Hawaii.

Thank you Jean for this video! I was journaling yesterday and I finally accepted that other than money, the one thing that is holding me back is society's beliefs. Quitting my job would make me seem ungrateful for the privileges I've had in life. But the truth is, I don't want this type of success. I want to be free.
hey! sounds very similar to what i was going through, except back then when i was still working i completely fell off the journaling wagon. Glad you're doing it - it really helps one to understand one's own feelings and desires so much! Money and social pressure are the 2 great love stories of everyone's lives haha so don't feel bad. It's never too late to start building something that's right for yourself.
I can relate with you. I am from the Philippines. I am on my 4th year in law school but I stopped since the pandemic. I realized that law degree will not make me happy. Currently, I have a decent place. My health is my priority. I am currently working in the corporate world as a legal, but I am thinking of ways to leave this corporate world because the legal profession is simply very stressful and toxic.
it is terribly stressful and often toxic sadly. I also started my career in litigation cos i wanted to make a difference (idealistic youth) then halfway in practice i alr realised all i do is serve big corporates and i'm just chuggin along for the money which i don't really care for. So i quit in the end. You can think about how it really works for you in your case :) good luck
Another great video Jean. You put so much into your excellent presentations. You seem really happy with the life you live now. Thanks and I always look forward to your next video.

Is a choice every individual makes and lot of time it depends on various situations & factors. The age & timing you in.Having a partner that share the same preference will enable the support from each other. The choice & considerations might differ if you don't have a partner.Later might wish to have children your thoughts & priorities also changes.Nothing in life is permanent.Life itself is not permanent.Partner priorities may also change.Every day thing changes situation changes. Thus, honestly true peace is within us individually.Flow with all & any situations good or bad ,happy or sad, with some one or no one, with something or nothing.when we truly is not control by any changes, concepts & perceptions that this way is better or that way is better.Hv more is better,hv less is better. With someone is better or alone is better.Coz that is still struggling even if it is very mild.Wishing you well & happy always.🙏
to be honest you are right.. most of the time when we visit a country is only touch on the surface... just a few days and really is more of going to the attraction and no longer meaningful to me
yeah back when i was still working and travelling during my limited time off, i always felt so depressed at the end of my holiday when i had to go and all i really wanted to do was hop on a local bus and go around and see more haa!

I like your way of thinking, stay well and travel safe
Curious what kind of work/source of income you have now?
Hey are you up for a talk?

Thank you very much for reminding us to live and not to only exist..My daughter and i gave up our jobs in America and sold everything 3 years ago.We have traveled to19 countries and counting. We are currently live in Panama with a salary of $10.00 per hour.We have not bought any clothes since 2019.Central America are linked together by bus.We take the bus instead of flying. We spent our days hike and doing everything together..We are so bless to recognize that consumerism was eating us alive. We lived in Bali, Vietnam, Malaysia South Korea and more.
Love it. Might run into you around the world. Just bought a one way to Cambodia. See where I end up this time.

2. Self-improvement
3. Downsizing
4. Exercise
5. Sleep
Great lil list! I’ll add to that a healthy diet as well! We’ve been going more plant based recently n feel great!
You forgot the thing you do before sleeping 😈
Perfect list.
The most important thing you have in life is time ...not gifts...spend this time wisely with family ..
Fully agree!
U go girl.
I am with you. Sold my 6 bedroom house on 10 acres and bought a 2 bed apartment and a camper. Spend my days exercising and travelling and learning.
Now that's downsizing! Good job if that makes you happy.

Hi great video. I left my well paid job at 42 it was making me ill. Went part time working in a call center, massive drop in money, but it was well worth it for my own well-being. I’m now 56 still working part time, it was the best decision I ever made. Picking my children up from school walking them home absolutely amazing. Priceless.
too much of a downgrade.
You're very wise and clearly articulated a lot of things after many years' experience on the planet I've come to understand instinctively. This mindset can be summed up in the phrase: The things we collect, we stop owning them and they start owning us. Freedom is letting go of chasing status and material things.
Yes absolutely, but so many ppl love all those things so much it’s baffling! I love the freedom!
Well said...

This should be the most popular video on UA-cam "bar none". Well done.
😍🤗
Just got back from a trip in San Francisco. At 29, I saw so many older folks in the streets and mall and tourist places and public transportation immensely stressed out and mentally disturbed. The amount of money they are making doesn’t justify that trade off
My wife and I live frugally in Vancouver Canada. Though it is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live, we geo arbitraged to the cheapest area of the city.
Curious what your thoughts are about saving for retirement?
Really excellent points - love that you encourage questioning what society defines as “success”, “ambition” or a “meaningful life”. Your point about the kind of meaning that’s attributed to the term YOLO summed it up incredibly well and certainly makes one question why it should be considered unambitious at all to make conscious choices that align with your values and beliefs!

TQ for your sharing Jean. I believe. I retired from job employment @ 40. A paradigm shift away from the old matrics came timely for me & my family. It was tough the 1st 4 yrs but, not anymore. Happy to hear you have been doing well up to this day. God bless you!
Awesome belief and philosophy of life. There is nothing right or wrong in life esp when everyone says its right it may be wrong and vice versa. Choosing your version of life and way of living that gives you happiness is key to making your life count. Well done !
i got lucky, but hoping to spread the consciousness around to more people!

I share the same beliefs, but you have verbalised them in such an articulate way :)
I have lots of friends who keep putting up with highly stressful jobs and workplaces that take advantage of them and don't even appreciate them.

Attachment and expectation are the roots of unhappiness. Less is truly more. You can explore the furthest reaches of your mind and still remain completely dissatisfied. I think you are making the right decisions about your life. You only live once is so true, so the best thing one can do is try and make the best decisions. With that, making the best decisions for you and your family happiness. Drowning in debt is one of the worse places to be in life.
This makes so much logical sense. I think we folks living in consumerism driven societies have it wrong. I love your videos.
You let me realized that I'm not an alien in my own (busy & expensive) world.
oooh totally agree! well done u - can service your own Air Con - wah start side line eh - ur back up if the main job fails haha. or should u decide to start own biz.
Good things to consider, good arguments. Thanks for presenting them in a thoughtful manner.

Thank you for uploading 🙏🏻
Congratulations of your decision to downsize and live a simpler life. The process of simplifying is definitely not simple but in the end, you feel liberated, lighter and you have less worries. 🙂
We just sold everything and moved here in canngu. We love our decision so far! Thanks for sharing yours!

I told him that there’s no limit to what you can or want to own but there’s a limit to what you need to get by.
arrrghh sounds like your friend has some very heavy burdens..... poor dude. ack that thought about the empty luxury house.... what a pity indeed.
Terrific video! Newer videos on simple living, including living on a smaller income, are hard to find lately.
Videos using the phrase Voluntary Simplicity seemed to have peaked 10 to 20 years ago.
Thanks! Glad the thinking behind the vid resonated 🌻🦋
This should be taught in SG primary & secondary school!
haha i really don't think Lawrence Wong would sanction that! what a thought! ROFL.....

We need both and both must be balanced.
thanks for pointing that out and i fully agree with what you said. It does need to be a choice borne of a balance.
You are truly an influencer. Love you for inspiring❤
I know of a classmate who retired, and he and his wife are surfing every day in Hawaii. Some do it earlier, some do it later. He bought him a camera, and is posting pictures for everyone to see. He is living the life in Hawaii.
Hehe great for him!

I love the honesty of this post. Thanks, Jean! Love your channel. Keep up the great work! :)

Inspiring experience, simplicity is happiness and peace

With someone is better or alone is better.Coz that is still struggling even if it is very mild.Wishing you well & happy always.🙏
when am i gonna stop looking for these vids?

to be honest you are right.. most of the time when we visit a country is only touch on the surface... just a few days and really is more of going to the attraction and no longer meaningful to me
yeah back when i was still working and travelling during my limited time off, i always felt so depressed at the end of my holiday when i had to go and all i really wanted to do was hop on a local bus and go around and see more haa!
