      After like 3 years I’m almost winding down my gift lotions/ones i bought before I knew about or had access to more sustainable ones. Same thing with perfume too. Honestly I feel so accomplished whenever I finish up all of any given product or thing so whenever I finish one I get this sense of accomplishment 😂 I have gotten one new lotion (I always like to have one unscented lotion on hand if I want it for various reasons) and I’ve been using a plastic free one for that. But everything else I’m just using up all the ones I’ve accumulated over the years.

    • @KoalaGardens
      @KoalaGardens 3 роки тому +2

      @Water Wigglier yes I grew up bringing groceries home in paper bags and string bags. I even remember when got our first freezer! Before that we did not buy packaged food to heat up like ever. (actually I have not done that for many years either as I would rather cook fresh food anyway). But things changed, and now we have to help re-educate people that they don't need to waste just because they can 🤗

      @Lauren Humphrey Be the friend! Talk about your switches and how you do it (in a non-judgemental way) and it will show others that it's possible to do it too! Eg: I started a worm composting bin and that got my mom to start using her area's composting program!
      Behaviorally people that see others (that they like) doing an action are more likely to start doing that action themselves, so if you make the good you're doing visible, you may pick up a few people on the way ^_^ Then you'll have friends into the zero waste movement!

    I’m a big tea drinker and switching most of my teas over from bags to loose leaf tea in infusers and strainers has been great! I get it from my bulk bins. A great perk is it’s so much fresher and delicious. Makes me so happy 😁

    • @maximalismrehab6030
      @maximalismrehab6030 3 роки тому +13

      I have also switched to using loose leaf teas. Another perk I have found is how relaxing it is to brew a nice cup of loose leaf tea. Watching the leaves unfurl in the infuser is so calming for me, almost like a mini meditation a few times throughout my day.

    • @mackenziemarien1252
      @mackenziemarien1252 3 роки тому +11

      I never realized I could get even more passionate about tea than I already was but loose leaf is genuinely awesome in so many ways! I actually work at my local natural foods coop and I recommend the loose leaf teas in bulk constantly, and customers always tell me how impressed they are with the quality of them that it really becomes a no brainer if you like tea. I love that a more sustainable option can also just be the better option! That doesn’t always happen so it’s really cool when it does

    • @Liam_xxii
      @Liam_xxii 3 роки тому +4

    • @PerfectPride
      @PerfectPride 3 роки тому +10

      Not only is it fresher but it’s better quality. The tea used in tea bags is called “tea leaf dust” and it’s basically all the broken bits of tea leaves that fall down the sifters on the tea processing floor and they kinda just.... sweep it all up and bag it and call it a day. Lol So it tends to be lower quality since the small pieces loose their oils more quickly resulting in a tea with less flavor.

      My local farmers market sells their berries in open punnets, I just dump them out into my own bag and give them the plastic back 😅 I know a woman that does this in supermarkets too to make a statement, she unwraps her items (that she can't already get plastic free), and hands the packaging back and says "this shouldn't be my responsibility to dispose of". I live in rural Texas, so food desert as you call it. So, on the things that I can't avoid in plastic, I choose a durable plastic so that I can reuse it to grow plant starts. My tofu for example, I choose a hard plastic container rather than the soft thin plastic.

Even for veggies I have to travel further the get to the store that has some things not in plastic, but at my local store everything is wrapped because it's so small and they're trying to preserve freshness. Essential oils are kinda controversial but the perfume brands likely use them or something similarly wasteful anyway, so you could DIY it, and don't go into excess. I don't know which brands there are in your country but stay away from Young Living, they're a horrible company. Essential oils last a long time as you really don't need to use much to create a blend. Please be very strict with the safety instructions as they are potent chemicals.

      Not a mum so I‘m not saying this is the perfect solution.
      We used to thrift most of our toys and I had a shit ton of plastic toys (also just generally a looot of toys) but they were dirt cheap and mostly almost new. We got new stuff as treats but being able to get more toys for less money and most importantly, being able to choose much more freely and independently what toys we wanted made me feel empowered and grateful. It taught me the value of money too. We also brought back our old toys to thrift stores or gave them to friends and I loved theorizing about what the toys might see in the new places. I used to imagine elaborate stories for all my thrifted stuff.
      Yes, there were episodes of wanting the newest version of something. Much more often however other kids were jealous of us having more interesting and different toys.
      I hope you find a solution that works for you and I hope that more sustainable toy brands go mainstream so they’re the trend every kid wants ☺️
