I never wore cardigans until I knit one. I can’t take this thing off! I’m hooked on cardio now! So much easier to knit that I anticipated. And so versatile.
A great video, thanks! Lots of inspiration here, thanks for doing the research for us!
Tanya, when u speak fast, if I close my eyes, I would think that it's the lady from Very Pink Knits who is speaking LOL
Love your podcasts :))
Thank you, I think I would start with the one you started with. That is the one I like
Speaking as an advanced boo-boo making beginner, my first 2 cardigans were by Tara Lynn Morrisson----NANAIMO and KINIKIN. Both knitted top-down with larger needles and bulky-super bulky yarn. Quick, easy, and a huge confidence builder! No buttons, pockets, or special shaping techniques. For me me that is not/or would not be a "beginner" pattern. Also, Ashley Lillis---produces FULL
-length video tutorials for cardigans, pullovers, and vests. If you need a friend to "show you", she is your gal! Might be ready to attempt Caidree's "Home" Sweater. Thanks for compiling.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Thanks for sharing. Great info.
The Harvest is a great option. I just finished mine-it’s both my first cardigan and first sweater.
Congrats on knitting your first garment!
The Felix cardigan is definitely a great one to do, very easy top down. Love it ❤ love your podcasts too ❤ from Australia
Thanks for the suggestion (I think we're going to have to make another video with all these great ideas)!
Thanks for the great podcast 😊
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great video, now that it’s not raining in Washington state, so I’m not knitting. Outside working in the yard!
One of the easiest cardigans is the cloudy day cardi. It’s a lovely garment, I did one in a colorful green and am planning to do another one.
Thanks for the recommendation!
What a great video !! Thank you !
Glad you enjoyed it!
that was great i love you so much thanks
Top Down Seamless Cardigans are the BEST.
Thanks .
Beatoful
Thank you!
Great video! My first cardigan was the Felix by Amy Kristoffers, and it was really great. By then I had already knit a sweater by Isabelle Kraemer, who had German Short Rows with a linked video so I knew what to do when I got to the Felix. I really think I lucked out by knitting Isabelle Kraemer first. Her patterns are so well written, and the Felix was also great.
I love Isabelle Kraemer's patterns - so well-written!

I knitted a Harvest cardigan for daughter.
I think you knit a long garter band for the neck and then pick up the rest and work down.
Easy enough for a basic knitter that had a long breaks.
This is jus whatI look for
Good idea to have beginners start with a baby cardi.
I actually started with a doll vest and will be starting the doll-sized sweater next. Then I plan on a baby sweater, toddler sweater, and then I'll try a simple sweater pattern for myself. The vest turned out really cute! Thank you, Tanya, for your tips and descriptions of the various sweaters; it is so helpful. Happy knitting, everyone!
I knitted the Kukka Cardigan of Rosa P. - a simple Top down raglan cardigan - together with a beginner friend. She had never a question, the pattern seems to be well written. I like your channel and appreciate your recommandations very much, with greetings from Germany!👍🏽🙋🏻♀️
Thanks for the recommendation! We might just have to do another video with all these great ideas. I'm glad you enjoy the videos!
Just found your channel, have liked and subscribed. Thanks so much for your input about making cardi's for the beginner. I'm just now trying to get back into knitting after a 10 year hiatus and would like to start by making a cardigan.
Welcome!
Thank you. I find ravelry overwhelming so appreciate all your suggestions. I also found your sock tutorials very helpful.
I'm so glad you find the videos helpful, Heather!
My morning knit with the nerd! 😂❤Still on socks. Just did my first Eye of Partridge heel flap. Might do a cardigan next.
Good morning! 😁
Zasio was my 1st and great although I made it too big but I have gotten the most compliments from it . I chose bright greens and yellow and some light blue stripes from one of those striped balls of yarn ? lion brand ? pattern from Very pink knits
Tonia, your videos are so informative and have helped this relativity new knitter get a better idea of where to start when considering a new project. The sources out there can be so overwhelming with the sheer number of patterns it can be impossible to know what's appropriate for a beginner. A project that is way beyond a knitters ability could turn them off from knitting completely. I almost quit several times in the beginning by biting off more than I can chew. Knitting should be fun to learn. Not a chore. Just remember that babies have milk before meat.
So true!
The Ramona Light cardigan by Elizabeth Smith is the one that I plan to try! Or Jen Geigley's Mabel cardigan sweater ❤
Thanks for the suggestions!
I would highly recommend the Kylie cardigan by Ann Klimpert. It is a garter stitch cardigan so no purling. It is a top down circular yoke cardigan. There is no ribbing on the bottom so casting off is easier. Plus picking up for the button bands is easier because you pick up 1 to 1 on the garter stitch. There is also a Baby Kylie if you want to start with a smaller version. I made both the baby and adult versions, and they both fit very well.
Great suggestions!
Hellow! The striped one, in maxi long would be nice to knitt. Do you have eny sudgestions for long cardigans? For cold winters in an bulcy yarn perhaps? And sudgestions? Strigth forward knitting on a rundneedel for example?! Not need the stripes but the modell seems rigth but in midi or maxi long! Barbro Sweden
I have a friend that has knit the 1413 Garter Stitch Kimono multiple times and swears by it. Easy and wearable. Worsted weight yarn.
Thanks for the suggestion!
The Umami Cardigan, Designs by Phanessa, has a free written pattern as well as a UA-cam Video Tutorial. Oversize Cardigan with drop sleeves knit bottom up, overall stockinette pattern with a built in garter stitch edge with ribbing on bottom and the cuffs. Knit with Super Bulky yarn so it knits up really quick. You do need size 19 needles for a large portion of it which takes a bit getting used to in the hand, but once you do, its done in a flash. I get compliments left and right on it and am knitting it for my mother this year for a Christmas present as she super covets it! Thanks for all of the other suggestions. For some reason I'm afraid of raglan shaping! I've done all sorts of intermediate and advanced knitting techniques and stitches but always shy away from Raglan, but your comment saying that it is easier than drop blew my preconception out of the water. You've now given me the confidence to try it! Thanks!
Thanks for the sweater pattern recommendations! You should definitely give a raglan a try - it's really very simple once you figure out what's going on!
Those were some great patterns. I love cardigans, and I don't have enough of them. If I wanted to modify a drop shoulder and bring it up on the shoulder, how hard would that be? I'm a size 2X and drop shoulder designs make me look even bigger. I need things to fit in the shoulders and chest then get looser.
You could make it closer fitting - you'll just want more room in the armhole (since it will be up closer to the actual armhole than just around the bicep). A set-in sleeve construction might be a better choice.
Thx 4 sharing . Is a drop shoulder sweater bottom up going just straight up on front and back ? or are there increases ? I cant picture how that pattern works ? GBU all
Often they are just knit straight to the underarm but you might find some that have some shaping as well.
V good collection. I would add Felix cardigan.
Thanks for the recommendation!
I want to knit Lion Brand wool ease thick and quick fitted knits mini cardigan. I bought the yarn and only 3 balls of wool ease as that is what required. I didn't realise it was a top down pattern which I have never done. I really like the pattern so I will give it a go. However if I can't manage it can you recommend a pattern for chunky size 9 mm needles mini cardigan bottom up
I like to search Google or Ravelry when I'm looking for patterns!
Great video! I want to try my hands at knitting a sweater. Just recently, I found a vintage 1950 waist high, short selves...looks like garter stitch....that I would like to try. Are you thinking about giving a Beginner class in sweater knitting? Thank you.
I am thinking about that - just not sure how to go about it yet!
@@NerdyKnitting Cool! 😎
Hi Tonia, this is such a helpful video. I have a question. I've just started knitting again after a 40-year break from it. I'm wondering if it is much more common to knit garments from the top down now? In my younger days I think that patterns were mainly knitted from the bottom up in pieces. Another question, do you need to use a circular needle to knit from the top down? If so, do you have a video or some tips on that? Many thanks
While you'll find patterns for garments knit in both directions (top down and bottom up) it seems like the most popular method right now is knitting them in the round from the top down on circular needles. I'm afraid I don't have any videos on that topic, though!
@@NerdyKnitting Hi again, thank you for replying so quickly.❤ I think I may take the advice in this video by practising this technique on a baby cardigan first.
@@maureen4669 Designer Julie Hoover has a strong opinion on this topic. All her designs are for bottom up and almost all are seamed for what she believes is the best fit and the best construction. I've found that to be true, so far.
With the Harvest Pattern, you cast on provisionally and work the band first then pick up the stitches
Thank you! I really should have looked at the pattern before recording. 😁
That Comodo does look interesting , that would just float over my bum :) Oh my... cracking up at my own expense here :D Being a Beginner going to need more experience for alter- to- fit. That Douglas Cardi brought out terrible terrible mental visions that left me giggling at the thought of it I can imagine those pockets falling under my bossom, going to say this one is NOT going to flatter me , hahaha perhaps in a few years as things go south, I can use those pockets :P
the Brick is a beginner friendly simple pattern ... free on Ravelry :))
Thanks for the recommendation!
I found several "Brick" patterns, which one do you mean, please?
I agree, knit a baby or toddler cardigan first..than give it to charity if you can.
My husband is a 4X he wants a cardigan and I'm having a hard time finding one for him that looks manly it can you help me
Have you looked on Ravelry? I just did a search for cardigans for adult men and there are quite a few - www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#craft=knitting&pc=cardigan&fit=male%2Badult&sort=popularity&view=captioned_thumbs
Grandpa sweater from Tin Can Knits goes from 3 months to 4x or more. Lovely pattern and I have done 2 toddler size ones. Would
I also really like the full video tutorial + free pattern of Florance! ua-cam.com/video/L9R64Q2E2lQ/v-deo.htmlsi=rllzqaWc7MqbRzdK
She explains it very well 😊
Thanks for the recommendation!
