Your words resonate with me, vet care is soooooo expensive now! In the past year I have spent $1600 on my 19-year-old baby who rescued himself as a 6-month-old by crying at my back door, he had been dumped. He finally had to be euthanized 2 days ago at a cost of $222. I am not only heartbroken, but I live on a fixed income, so I am also in debt. I didn't have insurance for him because I couldn't afford the monthly payments. This is a huge problem throughout the world, and there should be some way to get treatment and meds for our animals that doesn't cost a fortune. Our govt subsidizes so many things, some very good, others are very wasteful and expensive. I think there should be some type of subsidy that could be done to assist.
Sadly, I think most of what our government subsidizes is wasteful. It would be a benefit to humanity to provide affordable medical care for all animals and humans but I don't trust government to do it. Something needs to be worked out in the private sector. There are wealthy benefactors that care for animals, but not enough of them. Most people don't care.
You were charged $222 to euthanize your fur baby??? OMG! You have got to be kidding me! My vet charged me the cost of the medication, $13.75. He said that he doesn't understand why vets charge such high prices to put an animal to sleep, further hurting the person when the pet owner is already completely distraught over having to do it. He has a free spay neuter clinic twice a year and does as many and he can do on a .Friday and .Saturday at first come first served. His spay & neuter prices are very reasonable too. Kittens and puppies under a year are between $35-$50. Dogs prices vary because of size and weight and the cost of the anesthesia for them. But I have never paid more than $75 to get one of my cats or dogs spayed or neutered. The most expensive was my female English mastiff. It cost me $75 to get her spayed. I have never complained about prices at his clinic. Other clinics, YES… there are good vets out there that don’t charge ridiculous prices. You just have to look for them. :)

I believe the biggest issue is the popular misunderstanding of cats. Too many people think cats need to go outside, or worse, think they can survive outside on their own. They believe as long as they remember to leave some food outisde, the cat will do fine. If they remember to feed it. These are the same people who think tying a dog up alone in the back yard for its whole life is also perfectly fine.
Depends on your neighbourhood, my cat is safe outside because it's a secluded suburban area. And they do enjoy their short time outside, would always return inside when they had enough. We always have their access to the house open whenever they're not at home.
In Britain most house cats are free to go out when they choose. It is rare that they get lost because they get to know their local area well. I believe they live more fulfilled lives as a result.

He was sitting on his owners front steps when two kids saw him and sicced their dogs on him.( beware the video is disturbing) You ever see what happens when a raccoon attacks a cat? So it doesn't really matter how quiet the nieghborhood is or how close to home the cat stays. If it's outside, it's at risk. I'll give credit though, you sound like you care about your cats. My comment was about the people who don't and forget about their animals outside.
Dear Flatbush Cats, you inspired me to become friends with all my neighbourhood’s street cats, one by one... Thanks to you, every time I spot one of them, they come running for the petting and it fills me with unimaginable happiness
We live in a country that can even agree that all humans deserve healthcare, so it doesn't surprise me one bit that in our hyper-capitalist profit driven society where everyone is seen as a commodity and not human, that we can't seem to get our act straight on treating animals better. Thanks for the work you do and sharing it with us.
Spay and neuter affordable for Canadian cats too. Adopting a cat or kitten is over $250. Some people can’t afford that. Love your show by the way. 🇨🇦 💕
@@ferdabayazit4859 THAT IS RIDICULOUS!!! why on earth does it cost that much?????? I paid $100 for TWO 3 month old kittens. That included microchipping them both as well as the cost of getting them Both spayed before they were 6 months old.
I love what you do so much, as well as the reminder that inaccessible care for pets (not unlike American healthcare) is a systemic failure. I'm grateful to live in a country where this is not a problem, but am proud to be monthly supporter to hopefully end homeless, sickly and friendly kitties on the streets
I love many of the cat video content channels but Flatbush Cats is special. You are unique in that the video is always only on the cats , on education/awareness about the issues and about making things better for cats by modelling compassionate responses and care. This says EVERYTHING about what you care most about AND WHY YOU DO THIS - the cats, not your own fame/profit/ego, etc. Of course other channels are also educational and helpful, they are also about themselves and creating fame/popularity. It is different. This video was particularly important as it put responsibility where it should be, on the societal and government systems that are ignoring the problem. You are the best and if I wasn't already donating to my local SPCA in Canada, I would donate to you because you deserve support.
I love your channel. My son lives in Brooklyn Greenpoint. He walks and boards dogs. No help to you, I'm afraid. I rescued an adult feral 10 years ago. I could have used you then. She was under the bed until lights out for 15 months. She's now a loving, albeit demanding friend. Wish my life situation would allow me to take more. What I CAN do, and have been doing is contacting area legislators to create spay and neuter rescue systems. Thank you for all you've been doing.
Of course I love to see the "happy endings," with happy cats being adopted, but this is NOT what makes flatbush so great. This guy (and his team) are dedicating themselves to actually SOLVING the real issue. They have my utmost respect!
You’re right about shifting the blame. All people need to keep their pets are money and access. Money for the vet bills and access to veterinary care. It’s not easy when you live in a very expensive city.
Thank you for setting people straight about lay blame on owners all the time. They forget a lot of people can't afford to go to the vets for neutering and spaying. It makes me angry about it a lot of people don't know people's financial problems
@@1940limited I think its partly because American society often seems to have a low esteem for life in general. I live in Denmark and am constantly shocked that gofundme seems to be a very common way of affording necessary care. It's stunning that out of all the taxes paid, health and education for American citizens is an afterthought at best. If one doesn't care about the health and wellbeing of their neighbours and citizens, there is little chance their animals will fare any better
My hometown covers spay/neuter costs for one pet per family once a year and second pet 50% of the cost. They didn’t know how to encourage people to spay their pets (most families live in houses and both cats and dogs often walk around freely) - this tactic works quite well because we don’t have any female cats in my part of the town that could have a litter. Love your videos! Lots of love from Croatia ❤️
I always thank God that I have been able to take my Fur Babies to the vet and am able to get them meds. It is EXPENSIVE and has sometimes been financially painful. I think of the people who do their best taking care of their Fur Babies and are being held back financially. Thank you for explaining the Shift of Burden.
We are fortunate here. We have at least one organization that does low cost or free spay/neuter and basic vet care. That's a big step forward but there are still a lot of dumped cats. Someone gets a cute little fuzzball and they find out cats need care and attention, or the cat grows up and isn't a cute little fuzzball anymore. We get so many 6-18 month old cats from the pound. Some fixed, most not. All of them as sweet and friendly as can be.
You are just wonderful to do what you do. I applaud you! I live in California in an area and thank God we don’t have this problem. I love animals and I hate the suffering of any of them.
I can't wait to be a foster, but right now, I have an immunocompromised senior who HATES other cats. He was one of 102 cats in a hoarder situation and unfortunately never got over it (I tried, but he has an autoimmune issue that goes into overdrive with stress, I nearly lost him when I brought some kittens in for foster). Thanks for doing what you do.
I noticed the terrible neck wound on the black cat on the sidewalk. Kitten School in FL recently took in a cat with what looked to be an identical wound most likely from a fight with another cat. It took months to nurse that cat back to health and he's still FIV positive. I don't know if that black kitty will get the care he needs. These cats have a hard life. Thank you to everyone who does the best they can to help.
I really, really appreciate the direction you are taking things here. All of our animals have been rescues that we took in ourselves because the shelters were always at capacity when we found them on our doorstep. We were able to manage the spay/neuter costs, but other vet care has been difficult to pay for. It adds up so quickly -- especially when you have multiple animals. I think helping lower income families, who could otherwise provide good homes, afford vet care for their pets is a great idea. The blaming and shaming thing is NOT helpful.
Thank you so much for what you are doing in NY 🤗! You know, the vetenary bills in Germany are not really cheap either.... I have had approx. 35 cats so far (now 10, feeding a hand full more)... whenever I can touch them, I make sure I have them neutered, vaccinated, dewormed etc. It costs a fortune though.... But I have always said "as long as I have money for cigarettes, I can also spend money for cats having a better life"... So my youngest 3 girls (Honey, Sunny and Skitty) were only a few months old when I resued them from a shelter in August last year. And they are so adorable 😻😻😻
I agree that there's a larger, systemic problem. But I grew up in a home where animals were treated terribly, and I know that individual responsibility does also play a role. I never had a cat live longer than three years when I was a child. My smother forced them outside at night, even as kittens, in a rural area with bears and cougars. She wouldn't bother getting them spayed and neutered. If we moved, she'd just abandon them entirely. And then there was my stepfather who would overtly abuse them, even killing them if they got in his way. I'll never understand why people who don't even like animals insist on getting them. In my home, I think sadism played a role. It's not something I can ever forget.
That sounds like a lot of Trauma you are carrying with you, from a difficult childhood. I’m sorry you had to experience that. I totally get your premise and I do believe that “if you can’t afford a Vet you can’t afford a Pet”. The problem with that is it creates a Society where only the rich can enjoy a furry family member, and it will never resonate with people who think having animals is their right (it isn’t). There does need to be some kind of systemic solution. The cost of Veterinary care is completely unaffordable for many folks. I would love to take in a pair of Rescue Cats, but we are retired, on a partial pension that doesn’t allow for a 2k emergency Vet bill, so I don’t have Cats.
Yes, many people in Mexico don't abuse cats but they also don't necessarily regard them in the same way. They are not indoor pets and certainly do not get vet care. I mean if people live in poverty then how could they get them vet care even if they wanted to? To some people cats and dogs don't belong indoors and that's their choice but why abuse them? That's so sad.
@@cesarcueto1995 Poverty is a big problem in people's ability to take proper care of animals. If you can't feed your own children, or yourself, you're not going to be able to give medical care to animals. This is what he's talking about in this video. As for attitudes towards cats, I've seen attitudes change a lot even in my lifetime, and I'm only 51. When I was a kid, nobody kept their cats indoors. Few people even had kitty litters, since it was assumed that cats would go outside, no matter the dangers.
Thank you for rescuing these beautiful cats, and also for addressing the larger issues when it comes to (lack of) spay and neuter... I'm from a low income household and lately I've been caring for feral cats that come here for food and shelter. I don't want any more cats being born outside! I can't care for them all and I don't want to see anymore pregnant moms or tomcats fighting and injuring each other... I managed to scrape enough money to get two kittens spayed but that's all I could afford and unfortunately there is no TNT programs available in my area and I'm not quite sure what to do.
Mama Latke looks just like my ❤️ kitty Maxine who crossed the bridge 26 years ago. I’m so glad that the Spud family were all able to find fur-ever homes.
Growing up, we've always had solid coloured kitties - mainly tabbies and marmalade cats. I'm now grown and we've recently been adopted by a white and tabby cat who looks just like Mama Latke. He is the silliest, sweetest, most playful cat on the planet. 🐈⬛
Thank you for asking the PROPER questions! I own a nice size home but live on a fixed income. I would LOVE to adopt but I can never afford expensive vet care! Dental care is extremely expensive and that must be done every year especially if you can't brush your cat's teeth regularly and feed soft food! Cleanings alone are about $450 & that doesn't include extractions!! Double that if teeth are pulled! As a retired person, I have time and space and love to give but not the money it takes to properly see the vet. Hell, in this country, as long as healthcare for humans is getting more costly with about 500k Americans every year filing bankruptcy for hospital/dr. bills, you know it's worse for animal guardians! Our country is sick.
I live in UK and have lived in getmany and Switzerland. I rescued five cats in Switzerland and when I moved back to UK after 30 years I took all our five rescue cats with us. I could never have left them behind.
Sadly abandoned house cats is not just a city thing. We live in rural part of Massachusetts and have had cats unceremoniously dumped from moving cars on our dead end dirt road. We've taken in a few of these unfortunate souls and found them loving forever homes.
Being new to my area, I called around to local veterinarians for the cost to spay my cat. $350 was the average rate! After praying for the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi, a low cost shelter, veterinary, spay & neuter clinic opened literally - I kid you not - across the street from my apartment complex. The spaying surgery, yearly checkup and all vaccinations cost me $110!!
It is just amazing at how docile and calm the mother and her kittens were. I wish there were vets that would volunteer their time and services to help with TNR programs. With cat food becoming harder to find or in very limited quantities now I fear for the poor cats that cannot be rescued because there just aren't enough resources. I went to five stores this morning and none had even one can of cat food on their shelves! Stopping at all five I could only find two 3.15 pound bags of the food my cats prefer. On line services like Chewy are showing more and more out of stock notices.
That's the first ive heard about this. Are you in the US? I haven't gotten cat food since my cat passed in April and because I'm trying to catch a stray to hopefully make her my pet, this makes me nervous.
@@tlc6756, yes, I am in NW Florida and live with eight purr babies, all indoor only and all rescues. I wouldn't give up on finding another cat if you can. Even if you have to do a little extra to find the foods you want, saving a purr baby's life is well worth the effort.
Thank you for rescuing this family of cats. Unfortunately, the ASPCA vans are scarce and people can’t afford it especially when so many cats need spaying/neutering, so these poor animals live on the streets and keep multiplying. A very sad situation.
It seems like the kittens once they are trapped don't really have a grudge. To me they just have the look of someone who just realized how much he loves you.

I am so happy a cat who wanted to be inside got to go inside. I watch these videos with my cats and I always find myself petting them and being so happy they are safe, healthy and happy.
Such a beautiful and lucky cat family. You're right that the shifting blame and assuming someone else should attend to the problem of over population is unhelpful. We all have to do our part by donating, being trained on TNR procedures, fixing cats in our own communities, etc...
It's true. I just captured a feral mama and her two babies, it was OVER A GRAND to get them checked out, treated, and spayed. And that was just for mama cat. It's clear no one can keep this up for most TNR.

You are phenomenal..!!! I LOVE THE PURRING AT THE END OF THE VIDEO. YA GOTTA LOVE THE PURRING......💘😻💙😺
The USA, or its medical profession, wherever you may believe the responsibility lies, can't provide affordable healthcare for many humans. How can we provide affordable care for animals? This past summer one of our cats, a stray we took in 3 years ago, developed a serious urinary tract infection requiring major surgery. The tab to get him cured was $3000. We could afford it and didn't hesitate a moment to do what was needed to save him, but not everyone can do that. He was certainly "one of the lucky ones," has made a full recovery and today lives a very happy cat life.
The USA COULD provide healthcare for everyone. It CHOOSES not to. The profit motive has taken over an area where it should not even exist. I'm so glad your kitty recovered. One of mine used to get blockages. It was very scary.
@@krisniznik3953 For about as long as I can remember I've felt the "medical industry" was a for profit business that will never take care of everyone because of financial motivations. Government is complicit in this, too.

Dear Flatbush Cats, you inspired me to become friends with all my neighbourhood’s street cats, one by one... Thanks to you, every time I spot one of them, they come running for the petting and it fills me with unimaginable happiness
you are such a positive influence in these cats lives! thank you for loving them and providing them happiness :)
Please try to get them spayed. You might be able to find some charities like Flatbush to help you with the cost.
The one kitten that didn't struggle when put into their fleabath, what an angel!!! 😭
Words are not enough to appreciate your kind actions !! Please keep up the good work ! :)
I agree completely. Humans should be supported by the state for caring for creatures in need.
Bless the woman who fed Latke and the spuds til you could rescue them.
You are totally correct! Animals really suffer from human greed and indifference.
🔥🔥🔥
Lol when we were more capitalist healthcare was cheaper than it is today.
@@randomnerd9088 Oh look, another delusional moron that has no clue about American history.
Do you tell the politicians seeking your vote that they need to take action if they want your vote?
Your work is so important. Thanks for everything everyone at Flatbush Cats does.
Seems to me that Mama Latke herself is not much an adult cat. She looks somewhat small and she’s kneading the blanket at 2:16, a teen mom perhaps.
My 15 old cat still kneeds, and she is very small for her age. Hard to judge , most cats kneed disregard of age.
I always love when a litter of kittens all get related food-themed names.
Spay and neuter affordable for Canadian cats too. Adopting a cat or kitten is over $250. Some people can’t afford that. Love your show by the way. 🇨🇦 💕
Agreed. Here on Vancouver Island it is $194 for an adult and $244 for a kitten at our spca.
@@ferdabayazit4859 THAT IS RIDICULOUS!!! why on earth does it cost that much?????? I paid $100 for TWO 3 month old kittens. That included microchipping them both as well as the cost of getting them Both spayed before they were 6 months old.
@@ZippedUpKitz Vets are expensive sadly though very good usually. It does feel a bit like extortion somtimes
@@ZippedUpKitz There are evil people in the world, make it cheap and they can "buy" said animal for bait in dog fights or for animal testing...sadly.
Those prices should include spay or neuter. I don't think our local shelter adopts out un neutered animals.
Thank you Flatbusch Cats and all your volunteer fosters and other staff/volunteer partners for the lovely work you do!
There are no words to express how much I love this animal rescue.
I love what you do so much, as well as the reminder that inaccessible care for pets (not unlike American healthcare) is a systemic failure. I'm grateful to live in a country where this is not a problem, but am proud to be monthly supporter to hopefully end homeless, sickly and friendly kitties on the streets
Funny that Mama Kitty was so friendly but the kittens were so SPICY !!! 😂
You make this look so do-able. One of our kids just moved out and I think I will make it a room that can also be a cat/dog rescue room.
What a wonderful idea!
I'm fostering two feral kittens right now, and yeah, it's gonna be so hard to give them up 😢
Of course I love to see the "happy endings," with happy cats being adopted, but this is NOT what makes flatbush so great.
This guy (and his team) are dedicating themselves to actually SOLVING the real issue. They have my utmost respect!
You’re right about shifting the blame. All people need to keep their pets are money and access. Money for the vet bills and access to veterinary care. It’s not easy when you live in a very expensive city.
I'm still dying over Tater Tot's name!
Thank you for setting people straight about lay blame on owners all the time. They forget a lot of people can't afford to go to the vets for neutering and spaying. It makes me angry about it a lot of people don't know people's financial problems
A lot of people are irresponsible when it comes to pet ownership regardless of their financial status. It works both ways.
Yes, let’s also lay some blame on veterinarians who charge outrageous fees.
@@dandydon6049 I can't deny that.
That's bullshit if you can't afford it what are they supposed to do? Would you help pay for the vet bills?
3:56 100% agree! More compassion, less blame. More solutions, less finger pointing and judgement ❤️
Tater Tot, Shoestring, Crinkle. I love it!!!
Flatbush cats is an awesome foundation. It deserves all the support we can give.
Wow, those are wise and handy measures 👍, sounds like Croatia is great in applying civilized and thoughtful pet policy.

What a sweet mama. Thanks for all that you do.

Flatbush is not asking anymore. They are DOING! I'm a proud supporter in Texas.
Nothing more pure than seeing the familial love and bond between 2 cats
I can't wait to be a foster, but right now, I have an immunocompromised senior who HATES other cats. He was one of 102 cats in a hoarder situation and unfortunately never got over it (I tried, but he has an autoimmune issue that goes into overdrive with stress, I nearly lost him when I brought some kittens in for foster). Thanks for doing what you do.
Thank you Flatbush Cats!❤🤙
I noticed the terrible neck wound on the black cat on the sidewalk. Kitten School in FL recently took in a cat with what looked to be an identical wound most likely from a fight with another cat. It took months to nurse that cat back to health and he's still FIV positive. I don't know if that black kitty will get the care he needs. These cats have a hard life. Thank you to everyone who does the best they can to help.
Thank you for rescuing all these wonderful babies and finding them homes.
“She’s always trying to come in!” Lady that cat chose you
We have one like that who's lived with us over 3 years now. He adapted to indoor life perfectly. He knew which house to call on! :-)
Watching with my former feral fosters! We love your videos!
A local small town started a TNR program a few years ago. It's astounding how overpopulation was solved in just a few short years.
that's a great cat right there
I really, really appreciate the direction you are taking things here.
Thank you for helping Mama Latke and her babies.
Thanks!
Hello Lisa
Growing up, we've always had solid coloured kitties - mainly tabbies and marmalade cats. I'm now grown and we've recently been adopted by a white and tabby cat who looks just like Mama Latke. He is the silliest, sweetest, most playful cat on the planet. 🐈⬛
Always inspiring, doing the right thing, asking the right questions and never blaming anyone. You guys are the best.
Thank you for helping these babies
That silence after “these are the lucky ones” just breaks me heart. You know some didn’t make it
Thank you for asking the PROPER questions!

Hello Glenda
The thing that strikes me the most is how respectful you are when speaking of and to the cats. Bravo!
Sadly abandoned house cats is not just a city thing. We live in rural part of Massachusetts and have had cats unceremoniously dumped from moving cars on our dead end dirt road. We've taken in a few of these unfortunate souls and found them loving forever homes.
A huge “thank you” from Canada … I wish there were more people like you!

What I read on this channel about veterinarycare prices in the USA shocks me. Compared to the Netherlands the prices are outraguous.
Thanks for all you do!!!💝🐦🐥
