I'm glad you made it home doc. It was a dark day. I was 100 yds from the BLT building when it happened. I was on the other side of that elevated road, that's the only reason I'm still here. I still talk to most of the guys in my platoon on a regular basis.
Don Howell, You deserve all of the accolades you’ve received. You had the skills to care for for your fellow wounded soldiers. I’m sure it took more than the skills you had acquired. It also took a great heart. You obviously have that. Men like you… make all Americans proud !!! Thank you for your service. Signed half breed in Kansas
Wow! What an impactful interview Mr. Carr. Thank you and Mr. Scott for telling this story and bringing the forgotten memories of this tragic event back to light for so many who had either forgotten or never knew of it. Mr. Howell truly seems like the kind of guy I could sit with for hours over a beer, or two, or three.
We forget that these were young men for the most part looking forward to living their lives. Gone are the hopes, their plans. Lost sons, husbands, brothers. Thank you for reminding us.
I was in the Corps during that time frame. I felt our response to the bombing was piss poor. I heard Casper Weinberger talked Reagan out of responding hardcore. If true horrible! Semper Fi Doc God bless all those guys
My dad was there, he doesn’t talk much about it. So this podcast gave me some closure on a lot of stuff. Can’t remember what company he was with, but last name is Spivey
Had a friend who was on guard duty when the barracks came down. His Platoon was in the building… most were lost. He lived with a lot of demons. Saw him at our Recon reunion in 2015 and he asked me to draw a portrait for him shortly after. I sent it to him & he told me he was having it framed & giving it to his son. A few weeks later he took his life. A couple of years later I had a guy call & email me about that portrait. He was the owner of the frame shop. Jackie had never returned to pick it up and my name was scrawled on the back so that dude googled me. I got ahold of Jackie’s ex-wife and they were able to go get it. Beirut was hard on a lot of guys. My room mate in Lejeune lost his big brother in the bombing and it influenced his decision to serve. Burnham Matthews was our Comm Chief out at 2d Recon Bn back in the mid 2000s. Great podcasts thx.
hi gunny I was wondering I new a sgt matthers during the gulf War I know he was in 2nd recon during beriut bombing I remember him telling me all he remembered was cleaning his rifle Sunday morning and than the explosion and than hearing other marines screaming for help but he Said because of his injuries he couldn't do anything the last I remember of him he was at the drill field could that be who u are talking about semper fi steve
Jack, It would be awesome to hear an interview from a marine who deployed to Beirut after the bombing and what happened there the months after the attack. My dad was in Grenada Fox Co 2/8. They were sent to Beirut immediately after the attack. It would be interesting to hear what happened there during that time. Can’t wait to read the new book. Thank you.
I enjoyed listening to the podcast… I was in Beirut the first half of 83… Fox Company 2/6… I been in the BLT.. I was at the Embassy just days before it was blown up and the day after…

Jack thank you for writing this book. The public needed to be reminded of what these young men did and went through. Thank you from a Vietnam Veteran
Etched forever in my brain. I lost a friend and my ex a survivor. God Bless you and all who continue to live with the memories of this day.

The ultimate compliment, she could have been a marine. Apparently a tough wife searching for her husband.
I like the new intro
Adding to the algo❤
We were constantly shelled at outpost 69 airport runway, we had to stop patrols thru town
Doc Ogelsby ring a bell there Corpman .I was alpha 1/8 weapons platoon .
I have a question for you. Are you letting chat gpt write your books?
So, are we going to admit that this disaster was Reagan's fault since those troops had no business in Lebanon to begin with?
