  • I found a free canoe and needed some paddles, shortly after I found these three paddles but they were in need of some restoration.

    I've been watching your videos because I need to restore/preserve some tools I own but I also have two old fiberglass boats that need to be restored. One is a canoe which came with....three damaged paddles, lol. I'm glad I watched your knife video which led me to this video. Good stuff, keep it coming!

    Great resto! I wish that I could find paddles like that, but here in the southern US we don't have the heritage to have great canoe things like this. We only have the generic square end paddles here. I am considering reshaping my squared end paddles to a more classic beaver tail or otter tail design. Thanks for the inspiration. It's getting fall and the grass is slowing down, so I will get more time in the garage.

    Those paddles look awesome. In my area I continually come across old paddles in thrift shops and flea markets. My favorite so far is an old Otter Tail paddle that just needed a little love and some boiled linseed oil. Great video, looking forward to seeing your progress on the canoe.

    Beautiful work! I always prefer the older style & restoring old things. When I needed a fishing boat the cheapest to get on the water was the 3 air chamber inflatable (3 chambers required here). $20 including PFD & everything to legally go boating during the day. Plus the $15 yearly launch permit. Being retired I have extreme budget. Next step is to add a wood floor to it.

    Wow, those paddles could be put on the wall after each use. They look awesome and you put a lot of work into them for sure. Great job like always!

    On the paddles, try multiple coats of either spar varnish or marine varnish for the finish, after fixing the cracks with waterproof glue or epoxy. For the canoe, go online and look through the products sold by Jamestown Distributors and/or West Marine, for starters. You will find that the difference in cost between everyday products and marine-grade products is not that much compared to the time you will spend on labor doing it the first time, and then re-doing it again a year or so later when the wipe-on poly fails. Thanks for the video - the paddles look great right now.
    P.S. Blue Painters tape will pull up new paint if you're not really careful, as you may have noticed.

    Where the glass is, might hold up a while... Suggestion, drill a hole in the top of the paddles and insert a nice brass grommet. then use paracord or the like to make a lanyard. You don't want to wind up up the creek without a paddle. If you're going to be messing with things actually made to be in the water, you've got to move up to marine grade products. You do beautiful work, and these are nice, I don't know how much use they'll get, but one canoe trip could ruin them with average everyday products not made for the job.

    Nice job on the paddles. A tip for you you can precoat the paddle before adding the fiberglass or presoak the fiberglass beforehand. Less chance of air bubbles that way. Thanks for sharing.

      I almost did that. I chose not to to limit the fraying or the fiberglass cloth by moving it after cutting... not sure that was sound thinking or not though. 😁

  • @tootall5559
    @tootall5559 5 років тому +4

    Poly isn't going to cut it long term. You must use marine grade varnish. That paint won't stay long either. You'll yave to redo these probably once a year with minimal use.

    • @explorermike19
      @explorermike19 5 років тому

      Why won't the paint last? He fiberglassed over the paint. The fiberglass/resin should protect the paint and wood underneath.

    • @explorermike19
      @explorermike19 5 років тому

      I agree that a good marine spar varnish with UV protectant is needed especially to protect the fiberglass/resin. A good marine spar varnish should certainly last more than one year, however..

    • @tootall5559
      @tootall5559 5 років тому

      @@explorermike19 You'd think so, but it won't, not if they see a lot of time out in the sun and actually get used. UV rays for one thing, but mostly I was referring to that final coat of poly. It won't hold up in sun and the smallest nick can start it all going bad. It's UV rays that kill paint, and yes even fiberglass and gel coats. Even marine grade paint and varnish has to be redone every few years if they see a lot of outdoor use. Except for some very expensive coatings that the common man can't get hold of, nothing much stands up to UV rays long term. Some paints and varnishes do have some resistance but none are completely UV proof... no matter what the label says.

    Its great that you've put fiberglass over the blade, but in my experience the paddles break at the throat. I oil my paddles to get that natural flex into the shaft before the fiberglass and PE finish. I also run a resin cap on the end of the blade so it doesn't damage the fiberglass as you push the end of the blade off of rocks or sand while you're on the water.

    Only half way through the vid, but thought I'd drop you a note. Dude, that varnish should be vintage MARINE GRADE varnish. Citristrip is too namby pampy for that stuff. It takes a serious marine grad stripper, the kind that you have to wear a respirator and goggles and rubber gloves to use. Anything less, well you see what happens.

    It's great to see a restoration that's going back into service. They all looked great. Sometime you should try a burn and sand finish on wood grain. It really makes the grain show.

    Awesome video! Question for you. Do you need to put the fiberglass over the paint to seal it, or can you just poly it and it will still be fine for the water?
    My paddles are in good condition, I just want to paint them differently. Thanks!

    • @oldshovel
      @oldshovel  4 роки тому

      I did fiberglass to strengthen the paddle not to protect the wood. That said I am no expert. These are the only paddles I have ever restored or made. 😁
