    while the oversexualized songs ARE bops, I 100% agree with this sentiment. I think it’s reflective of our society. Female artists have more to offer than just being sexualized

      I feel this way too! On one hand it's great that they can express themselves sensually but it feels like it's a requirement for new female rappers to be hypersensual that they are just clones of each other (because that's what the industry wants).

    Rapping about the same thing is a bigger issue in female rap because it doesn’t mirror their real lives. Rapping about how your a bad bitch and men are your plaything then getting constantly put down by and mistreated by men is jarring. Notice also that male rappers seem way more tight lipped about their disagreements these days, female rappers constantly seem to want to put each other down and be validated by their male counterparts.

    • @jonispringer
      @jonispringer 5 місяців тому +30

      That’s true but don’t say only for woman. Men also make other men down in rap and objectify woman as their "toys"
      It’s not a female rap problem but a general rap music problem

    • @JD-fz3hy
      @JD-fz3hy 5 місяців тому +53

      @@jonispringerYou didn’t read my comment. It states that men do objectify women and that they have beef. The issue is that the image that female rappers portray in their music does not match the selves in their personal lives. Additionally it’s just odd that female rappers are aware of things like what happened to Meg and Cassie but never use their music to speak on it.
      Men objectify too, but they practice what they preach (for worse of course). Men have beef but as we saw with Tory Lanes they are more than willing to close ranks. Female rappers rarely band together, most of them watched Meg fall and hid.

      @@JD-fz3hy THANK YOU. I’ve *always* been curious about this. 🤔 These songs likely aren’t written by them. But still. The music doesn’t pull from their real experiences or background. It’s an escapist power fantasy for everyone else. I’m losing interest in that these days.

    I hate how, for example, Nicki's most personal songs never become as big as ones ab sex, and it's completely on the same people that say that she only raps about sex, the audience.
    She literally put out a very personal and overall amazing song as a lead single, Pills n Potions, and yet Anaconda, the second single became not only the hit of the album, but among her biggest and most iconic singles.
    This happens for so many of her songs, she has so many well-written personal and deep songs, and yet people act like they don't exist.

      It is all about selling sexuality when it comes to female artists. The days of Roxanne Shante and MC Lyte is over. There is one musical genre, is about respect to women and that is Metal. There is a huge rise in women in Metal. Floor Jansen (vocalist for Nightwish), Courtney La Plante (vocalist for Spiritbox), Jessie Williams (vocalist for Ankor). There is a big rise of female guitarists and all girl bands. They are for musical creativity, unfortunately for commercial it is all about quickly making money.

I have been a BIG barb since I was 11 (25 this year) and I can say without a doubt this is the most boring album Nicki has ever even had a verse on let alone make herself. Flows are generic, lyrics are boring, and beat uninspiring. Her singing songs have nothing on the beautiful ballads we used to get like Grand Piano or Marilyn Monroe. As a millennial I got bored very quickly of all the sameness of male mumble rap and missed champagne bottle popping hyper-sexual party rap. It’s what I grew up with. Women were actually the only ones really providing that recently and I appreciated it. I didn’t grow up in the ghetto or face extreme adversity so I don’t relate to gangster or issues rap. It’s just what it is for me and lots of people I know. Women are just capitalizing on this hole in the market men left wide open. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

It’s like for other genres it’s “sex sells” but for women in mainstream rap, they are EXPECTED to sell sex. Personally, I believe the problem doesn’t lie with the female rappers but with the demand by public. There are several female rappers who are not rapping about sex yet they are paid dust and there are mediocre female rappers rapping about sex and are praised. There are also main stream rappers like Nicki who is versatile in the sense that they rap sex and other topics yet the sex songs are what tops the charts. Music is a business and they are going to do what sells, pop is no different to be honest. Do I prefer the sex songs? Nah, I will not deny that there is a demand and they are filling that demand.

    I think Salt N' Pepa started the whole "Sex sells" image with female rappers back in the early '90s with their "Very Necessary" era, along with Patra. After that came Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Trina, etc.
    As far as female rap today, I don't find anything wrong with the hypersexuality today. Male rappers have those that are hypersexual as well and others who show more versatility, same with Female MCs. Their is also Kamiyah, Rapsody, Chika, Lady London, Young MA etc. who had a little success but aren't huge yet because their not getting the support their male counterparts are.

    Not a trace of Doja Cat in this video when YOU know she’s one of the most talented and promising rappers we have… you’ve made it too obvious you don’t like her even a little bit BUT not to include her here is pathetic, especially when she’s one of your most discussed rappers in this channel. If you make money out of her controversies, you should give her her 10s too. Luckily the comments didn’t disappoint

    How you make a whole video about female rap and not mention Nicki Minaj once? Plus, Nicki has BEEN vulnerable and talk about different topics in every single album she’s released, those songs didn’t top the charts as much as the sexual songs for sure - but the music is being made. PF2 and The Pinkprint have SO MUCH range sonically and thematically x

    I think it is very much the industry's fault, honestly. Anyway, I think it says so much that "Cobra" had to be independently made. That's the encapsulation of this issue in my opinion. Hopefully others will follow her lead if their contracts don't let them make the music that is different from the mold, if they really wanted to make it!

    Female rappers today I think, are afraid of being their "true selves" or less sexualized, because they know what "makes money" in this world. Sad as it is. And I have no problem with seeing the female body, I'm a woman & I like woman. So that's not the main issue, for me. It's the fact they don't do ANYTHING but show or show off their bodies. When they don't have to & shouldn't feel they need to. Not to mention how that effects young girls... when ALL their fave female rappers are looking & talking about the same things. So YES. It's an issue. At this point.

    The music was to reflect the present day issues. What could be inferred is that maybe America is no longer able to maintain focus due to so many distractions and consumerism and maybe collectively we re not seeking truth or critical mindedness. Maybe the audience and clearlymusic execs do not have a baseline on what quality music is. And currently is only prioritizing financial returns over art and creativity. Yes we can have modes of various music genres and subject matter but when we allow music without substance to rise over music with substance or at least not have a balance between the two its not a good outlook. Love the video and its critique for sure.

    Thank you for this video. This is something I’ve noticed and pointed out a lot lately. Female rap has become increasingly frivolous with the accomplishments meaning less and less in recent years. “Owning” your sexuality is not the same as being beholden to it as your brand. This goes for Nicki too (especially?).
    Cardi’s debut was such a cohesive, well-developed album with emotional complexity and variety but she’s squandered nearly all that good will by waiting 6 years for a follow-up and giving us only lightweight sex jams that don’t move the genre forward in any way.

    There are some seriously talented female rappers putting out great music & being successful!
    I think it just so happens to be the case that the most sexualized ones gain the most fame & notoriety.

Most Nicki songs aren't sexual at all, despite Nicki being called the industry standard she has never used sex appeal to sell songs i would say Anaconda was her most Sexual song and even then it's pretty tame compared to Wap or Bongos.... The person you're describing is Cardi B and she even said it herself that when she dropped be careful no one cared

    I agree with all of this but what’s with you constantly downplaying Nicki? You may not like her or her music but to say there’s no one pushing for a change in female rap atm in terms of substance while Nicki Minaj is RIGHT THERE is kinda ignorant and/or biased. The girl you love to critique in your videos is the same girl who’s keeping the genre alive. She’s given the culture rap, pop, r&b, edm, dancehall, etc. which is more than any female rapper past or present has done. Her latest album Pink Friday 2 is imo a very personal album that’s glazed and nicely decorated so the general public can easily digest it. She gave her fans singing pop tracks, as well as gangster rap & even some dancehall & gospel all while making it consumable to mainstream media. It’s genius.
