The other problem is that Canada has only a few cities separated by large tracts of chilly, bear-haunted lands. Residents of small towns must either settle for local entertainment or else drive for hours in their bear- and moose-resistant armored cars and then stay overnight in a raccoon-proofed hotel.
The U.S. is probably somewhere between Canada and the U.K. in terms of going out to see things - we tend to go out on the weekends, Fri or Sat, but not more than twice a week and not always every week. Also, people here don't always want to spend money to see music or comedy on a casual night out. Especially because comedy is such a Celebrity/Film thing in the U.S., the average person doesn't really want to see some random local standup. Music is much more yhe things Americans tend to vo out to see - locals, live bands at resurants/bars, concerts, whatever !
