  • Today we're making a Hopped Blueberry Session mead! This is a mead that is generally lower ABV and super crushable. I think this mead would be perfect for summertime. Check out the recipe below and be sure to watch the video to learn how to make it. Cheers!
    Hopped Blueberry Hydromel Recipe:
    3.75 Pounds of Blueberry Honey
    3 Gallons of Water
    5 Grams of YLP-005
    1 oz of Galaxy Hops
    26.5 Grams of Priming Sugar (or the carbonation tablets)
    Erythritol for back sweetening (if bottle carbonating)
    2 tsp of DAP

    You could also bottle carbonate then pasteurize the bottles in 180 degree water for 10 min or so. This will allow you to keep is sweet with natural sugars, and kill the yeast so they don't explode.
    I use my sous vide to help keep the temp up.
    Happy Brewing!

    Hey my friend, I believe I found a whole kegging system for roughly $150 on northern brewer. It was corny keg, regulator, co2, and all the tubing included. Idk if the deal is there anymore, but it’s life changing ;)

    Another reason why your fermentation may have never taken off with the ale yeast is because DAP is toxic to yeast in their wake up/rehydration phase. Usually it's best to wait ~24 hours after pitch and you notice fermentation has started (AKA after the lag phase) to add DAP.

It all helps those of us who are so new to mead making. I can't wait to try out this recipe. Is this recipe considered a 5 gallon batch or a 3 gallon batch? I have a 3 gallon and 5 gallon carboy. Not sure which one I should use.

    Hey great mead going there. I wanted to add that from my experience, k1v 1116 doesn't bottle carb well in general and i looked it up later on lalvin's site. it says that this yeast does not produce a prominent secondary fermentation when removed from its lees. It works great though with cold crashing i did that years ago with sack meads, one was finished and cleared in 2 weeks lol

      You can puree them with a blender or you can just use a something to smash them up quite a bit! Add the pectic enzyme or pectic enzyme when you start the brew or right on the fruit 24 hours before you start the brew!

    I have a question concerning K1V-1116 yeast. I have some but have read that it is a yeast killer. So, being super paranoid, I have not tried it out yet. Is this something that will get into a plastic fermentor and take over in future batches of homebrewed beer, mead, cider? Or am I just super ocd/paranoid? My sanitation is on point. Thank You

    • @ManMadeMead
      @ManMadeMead  Рік тому +2

      That only matters if you are trying to use multiple yeasts in a brew! It shouldn't matter otherwise!

  • @EtherealPrelude
    @EtherealPrelude 3 роки тому

    After backsweetening with erythritol, taking an FG reading is skewed since it's not as sweet as other sweeteners, right? For example, if you had two dry brews and both were backsweetened to 1.010 but one was backsweetened with honey and the other had erythritol, wouldn't the brew backsweetened with honey be discernably sweeter since the gravity points of erythritol and honey are comparable?

    • @ManMadeMead
      @ManMadeMead  3 роки тому

      I definitely think there could be a difference in sweeteners. So - you're right! I think the final gravity would definitely be different from if I were to back sweeten with regular honey or some other substitute!

    So you need to carbonate more at the end typically? Doing my first mead right now.

    • @ManMadeMead
      @ManMadeMead  4 місяці тому

      This brew is way better carbonated! If you don't do it carbonated, I would recommend doubling the blueberries and honey to make it a stronger mead... it'll be pretty watery without the carbonation.

    i don't know a lot about melomels and hopped meads, but i'm kinda confused about the total time, with my traditional mead it took several month to be barely drinkable (around 3weeks primary + 2/4 month secondary for clarification and carboy conditioning, correct me if i'm wrong), here instead it ends in 9 days + 2 days of hopping + 3 weeks bottle conditioning (1 month total)...shouldn't it be yeasty as hell? just asking, i just want to know more :)

      I almost exclusively make hydromels, but have made some standard, higher ABV meads and understand your concern. The short answer is no. Unfortunately I’m not knowledgeable enough to know exactly why, but I think it’s due to the yeast only consuming 50ish points of gravity in sugars, there tends not to be nearly as much yeast compared to it fermenting on 100+ points. It’s not a linear scale as ABV increases, it’s orders of magnitude more yeast, so more yeasty.

    I've read some conflicting information about bottling carbonated meads and wines in regular wine bottles. Is this okay or should I use beer and champagne bottles?

    • @ManMadeMead
      @ManMadeMead  2 роки тому +1

      You can’t carbonate something in a regular cork wine bottle. The corks will fly out! You can cork in champagne bottles with the cages on top because they’re intended for carbonation. Beer bottles (bottles with crown caps) and those champagne bottles are graded for pressure. Regular wine bottles are not!

    • @danglerfish4175
      @danglerfish4175 3 роки тому +1

      I find that really depends on the mead. I usually try to taste mine at room temperature before I chill them to see how they go both ways. In general I'd say fruity/sweet meads are best chilled and spiced/dry meads are just fine at room temp
