  • Today at Badgerworks, we follow on from our "Red Five" build and picture what would happen if Darth Vader flew a Messerschmidt 262 jet fighter.
    In this build we'll be looking at how to use tonal variation to add interest to a fairly monochromatic colour scheme.
    Please excuse my slightly croaky voice - my hayfever is just starting to kick in :-)

    I played Wings of the Luftwaffe on PC when I was a kid and it really stirred my interest in WWII aircraft. Outside of politics and ideology I really loved the designs Germany came up with like the Horten 229 and the ME 163. It amazes me that some of the stuff was so ahead of their time.

    • @Spartanm333
      @Spartanm333 4 роки тому

      Yes but they didn't promote the failures at the time and there were many. Or the pilot deaths. A country like England or America would have never asked a pilot to commit to a suicide test mission. The German's did, literally strapping decent young pilots to a rocket in order to guide them, with no practical way of ejection or deploying a parachute.
      And the design process, they pushed boundaries for sure and with a bat-shit crazy leader many of these went into production even though they weren't practical or cost effective to produce - the multi engined and twin cockpit / fuselage aircraft spring to mind. Britain in particular had a history and experience of engineering excellence with a filter process for functionality and practical build - even the great Barnes Wallis (Wellington superstructure, bouncing bomb) and R.J.Mitchell (Spitfire) didn't get all their ideas and designs approved. Mitchell was held back significantly for several years until a private benefactor stepped in with cash and side stepped government red-tape.
      Frank Whittle - the first practical jet fighter was derived from his turbojet engine design (first patent filed 1930) - way beyond the German thinking with their virtually uncontrollable and impractical 262 - it was fast at 500 MPH but how long was it's flight time? How rare / expensive was its fuel? The first allied test aircraft derived from Whittle's engine exceeded 400 mph in 1943, the resultant production Gloster Meteor over 600 mph in late 1945 as the war was coming to an end. Had Whittle been better supported, the Meteor in 1943 would have ended the war much sooner and there were plans to install the engines in the heavy bombers. The German designers and engineers did well in rocket technology, struggled with guidance - many went to America after the war and became the foundation of the NASA Apollo programme - credit to them, but they weren't any more innovative than the allies. That would be a twisting of history in my view.

    Always had a soft spot for the 'Schwalbe'. A beautiful looking machine, even now. Let down by it's powerplants. A few years ago, some guys in America built a new Me 262, but were told it would be unsafe to use genuine engines, as their reliability was dodgy, to say the least. I believe that the 262 flies with engines from an old Lear Jet. But don't quote me on that - I binned all my 'Flypast' magazines last summer.

      @@michaelgershon870 There'll be a new video out tomorrow where I use it again. The basic trick is to let the putty dry for about 20 minutes, then rub over it with a cotton bud soaked in isopropyl alcohol - this will remove the excess and smooth out what remains, removing the need for sanding.

    Wow the better aircraft for Darth Vader!
    excellent construction although, as far as I can see, the new kit maintains many inaccuracies typical of the Airfix of past years.
    One for all the Stuka 1/72 (at that time sold in a transparent plastic bag with the instructions stapled on to close the bag) completely without recesses above the engine cowling. Coming back to this model: the left side of the black area on the nose is not as straight as the right side but slightly narrows along the second panel. I must say that seen from the front you notice the difference but seen from the left side the dividing line is harmonious and not bad. Hello

    Word to the wise if you're going to do this kit with the undercarriage down, make sure you glue the weight as far forward as you can, I glued a BA 6 nut to the cockpit firewall and it was still a tail sitter. I ended up having to fill the nose gear well.
