This is the first I have heard of the channel and it has been a great introduction to Korean history for me as well. I am fascinated by this An Jung-Geun especially. Maybe at some point he'll deserve his own video, as he might be a good jumping off point to explore the ideas bumping around Korea at the time. Keeping track of Korea's attitudes toward its larger neighbors can make its political history a little intimidating.
Great video! I am fascinated by Korean history. Who killed queen Myseongseong and why? If you have videos that discuss this, please point me in their direction.
The reason gojong signed his country away to japan despite japan killing his only true love queen myseongseong. Was because back then even now Japan was twice the size of Korea geographically and population wise. Japan had modernized 30 years earlier and had more technology because of heungseun daewongun Korea failed too modernize on time and by the time they did it was already too late if Korean empire went too war against Japanese empire it would’ve been suicide. He literally had no choice korea was too weak and modernized too late he tried his best it is said gojong wanted to annex territory so that korea could be an actual empire
North Korea likes too think of themselves as the successor of Joseon. What’s interesting is gojoseons geography was all in the north the south was known as Jin.
I hope there will be efforts from the authorities to restore the Korean monarchy by establishing South Korea as a constitutional monarchy, similar to Britain, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Canada, the Netherlands, and others. The benefits of a constitutional monarchy: 1. Political stability: The monarch acts as a symbol of national unity. 2. National identity: A symbol of culture and heritage. 3. Balance of power: Democracy is preserved, the monarch plays a symbolic role. 4. People's connection: A representative for all layers of society.
Much can be said about the Korean Empire...for me personally I really DO believe that Gojong of Korea...the Last Joeson Monarch did this as Last Ditch Effort to strengthen the Monarchy....Sadly it was not the case...With centuries of Interfaction fighting....generations of civil servants within the gov't that despised the House of Yi.......not to mention Imperial Japan on the rise....it lead to end of Joeseon Dynasty.
@@loonytricky I think it would’ve remained they would’ve just been a protectorate so soldiers would remain but they would have autonomy but still be part of Chinese territory. A good example would be Tibet officially they were under Qing dynasty controll but the dalai-lama was still allowed to rule.
@@loonytricky what I find interesting is that Okinawa or ryukyu was more pro China than Korea despite not bordering china. It’s interesting because Okinawans even adopted the clothes of the ruling dynasty in China. During Ming they wore Ming clothes and during Qing they wore Qing clothes.
@@dragothunderstar6526 Ryukyu/Okinawa had strong trading ties to China and is culturally Chinese influenced despite being ethnically and linguistically related to the Japanese.
@@dragothunderstar6526 That would be a problem plus an ill fated that they wouldn't be protectorate for long. If anything then the Great Power now have more claim that wanted that territory to be in their Sphere. I can see 3 will want Korea. First far most it the Russian. Then the French with their expedition now just able to force the Qing to give it to them. Lastly the late comer is the German. Overall not a great outcome too. Full independence and mordenized Korea with alliance to one of the Great Power is better. At that point the Qing already a sinking ship.
It is great to find so many videos detailing Korean history! Thank you for your hard work.

@Loonytricky do you think Korea would’ve been saved had they accepted full anexation by Qing china ?
well no... Korea / Joseon would've ceased to be if that was the case

omg, what did he say?
the voice in this video is too soft and difficult to understand

고종은 무능한 왕이 분명하다 왕으로써 유능하고 자질이 있었더라면 일본의 식민지는 되지 않았을 것이다
He just loves power. I can't believe he has never managed to make a constitution for Korea during his reign
7:55 WTF America
Imagine if they did that today . Actually, no need.
I wonder what if Korea still have royalty what Korea will be like
How can they just hand over Korea to Japan without a fight, even if the chances of a successful resistance was bleak. Where were the true patriots?
I think sunjong was gay
