Decades ago, I had store bought potato sprout. I threw them out in the yard. They grew. I didn't harvest them. Those potatoes left in the ground sprouted also. Now, I have potato growing all year round. They keep coming back. Free French fries anytime I want.
Hehe my dad has potatoes all over his garden, because he puts the skins off his shop bought ones into his compost. He's had plenty of lovely, healthy spuds out of his flowerbeds! 😀 I'm primarily growing Setanta this year, they're an Irish variety so have been bred for blight resistance and hardiness. 🙂
The first few years he had no idea what they were and would pull them up, until I told him they were spuds! Now he leaves them and enjoys getting a few potatoes. It's just luck where they pop up, for him. I'd imagine it wouldn't be the most reliable method!
Wow brilliant video Erica. I’m literally about to plant some potatoes 🥔 after watching this video because I have a bed with nothing in so this is a great idea. X thank you . And good luck 👍🤎 🥔
Great video and haven't tried growing potatoes from supermarket ones. I will have to try it but I am going to wait until the spring next year because I have other plans for this year. Continue having fun gardening everyone and hopefully you have a good harvest of your crops.
Great video! You have such a nice accent! My son and I attempted this last yr in zone 6b. We planted inside a plastic lined laundry basket w so-so results. We plan to do so again this yr; hoping for better results. 🙂
Hi Erica. Yes your videos are very inspiring. Keep it up! I'll tell you what happened once. I bought a bag of white potatoes from the market. I didn't know the variety but I bought them with intention of planting them all in the garden. If I remember there were several rows in all. Anyway the weeks passed by and nothing came up. Eventually I dug some up and found they hadn't grown at all. I later done some investigation and found that there were treated with a chemical to stop them growing! I don't think the major supermarkets do this practice but it was a whole lot of wasted time and effort. It's true home grown potatoes taste so much better. I think the worst vegetable to buy in supermarkets are plastic bagged carrots. They seem to go rotten in just a few days and taste bland.
Yes, it is crazy, just goes to show that veg does hang around a little while before you eat it if they have to spray it. These potatoes that I put in the ground had already started sprouting so fingers crossed they will grow, if they don't I will keep adding soil and it will be ready for something next spring.
I found your video very informative and your teachings as well this and your seemingly kind personality got me to definitely subbed. Thank you and happy, healthy growing from 🇨🇦. Canada 😊
Erica's Little Welsh Garden it’s not a bad little thing you’ve got going there I’ll keep watching your channel to learn a few things maybe you would like to do that the same have a glance or have a look at videos and my channel comments and feed back are much appreciated cheers Andrew
Hopefully HUMONGOUS spuds! Mt Desiree have got about 3ft of top growth spreading out from the buckets... I hope there will be something underneath! Nice vid.
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden I planted them mid May and so 20 weeks would take me into early September. I will probably have a little fumble around in August to see if they have sized up, cut the tops off, and store them in situ in their buckets until I need them, as I had an amazing crop of Charlotte recently, they were planted 2nd Feb, didn't show any leaaves until after the late frost and were really big and clean.
Hi Erica. Nice vid. I'm going to try some Pentland Javlin seed potatoes this summer. I do have a shop bought potato growing that I sowed in April. It's in a fairly small pot. It is flowering at the moment so I won't harvest just yet. I'm looking forward to seeing what - if anything - I get.
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden Thank You ! your video gave me such great info i never would have thought to do, I made a nice little nest of hay, coffee grounds and a tad of 10-10-10 fertilizer and then place the potatoes in the nest and covered them up with dirt, I could tell right from the start those potatoes were so happy in their nest/hole lol can't wait to watch them grow. Peace and happy potato peeling :)
Sorry for the late reply, you can plant them straight away but if they have not sprouted you won't know if they have been treated with an anti sprouting chemical.
My dad has been growing potatoes from ones that he had in the porch that were starting to grow, they're doing well so far, not sure exactly what variety they are. One other thing I have tried is tomatoes. I had some baby plum tomatoes from the co-op earlier this year, and followed a suggestion from someone else online to keep the seeds in a jar in the fridge for a little while to let the coating on the seeds ferment away, and then dry the seeds off and plant them. The plants have grown well but haven't fruited yet so it will be interesting to see whether they are true to what they were. The variety was this: www.fairtradetomatoes.com/ a mix of different colours of baby plum tomato.
The potato is the coolest plant ever, if you don't eat them or they go all wrinkly you can just plant them and grow loads more... I heard that potatoes are the most thrown away vegetable in the world. Imagine if everyone grew them instead? How many food miles would be saved?
Not these ones nope, you don't actually have to chit them, it just gives them a head start early in the year... We've had the longest day now and we're marching straight into the dark now so getting them in the ground ASAP is best (in my opinion). 😊
There's some things I refuse to buy at the grocery. Potatoes and carrots are two of them. Store bought carrots truly do taste like disappointment. If my harvest fails, I will buy from a local farmer and store in my cellar.

Amazing!
Just picked a load of Desiree from supermaket. Delicious.
They are tasty... but to be honest all potatoes are yum yum!

Blight resistance and hardyness are very good traits! I have tried growing from peelings but have never had much luck to be honest.

hi, how many potatoes do you get when planting two potatoes?
Depends on a number of things but you should get about a kg each.
Very inspiring. Thank you so much. I love watching your vlogs. 👌
Thank Alison, glad you're enjoying them. 😊

Great way to grow potatoes if your short of space great work keep up the effort and hard work and reap the rewards 😃cheers Andrew
Certainly is a good use of space, also as they are in pots they are easy to move into the polytunnel when it gets cool.

My main crop potatoes are shop brought ones due to covid I couldn't get seed potatoes, they are growing well!
What variety are they? Love growing potatoes.
So many weeds in your garden
Does that upset you?
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden Yeah it kinda did upset me
smashing video
Thank you
Erica i have done this for the last three years and always get great crops. I keep aside the ones we like and chit them.
It's such an easy and cheap way to get more food! Think of all those food miles saved too!
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden 100% agree. We've had dinner for 6 nights so far from ours. Great that you are sharing the idea with others.

Nice one Erica. I have a few shop bought spuds going in soon - plus the Charlottes for Christmas
I'm going to also get some potatoes for chrismtas... I'm wondering if the garden centres will have any this year 🤔
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden I had to buy some online ☹️ but I didn't check the garden centres.
I will have a look around....
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden You could always use your own (knowing what a skinflint you are LOL - your words not mine 🙂)
Haah, true, we will see... I have nod had a pay cheque in 2 months... I might treat myself at the end of the month. 🤔
Some shop bought potatoes have been treated with Growth Regulators to make them store longer and as such can be slow to grow.
Yes, you are right... So far it looks like these ones are growing ok and did not get sprayed. Many thanks.
Thank you :-)
Glad you found it helpful.

I'm sure you will get something for sure... A potato reveal is always a bit scary I find, just incase the pot is empty...
The potatoes i have got growing are from shop bought 😊
Oh nice! Love growing shop bought!
I'm gonna try this! If you have a potayo with lots of eyes on it, can you divide/cut it in 2 and plant it?
Yes you can, I would say you should let the curt dry for 24 hours too just to stop it going bad once it's planted.
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden thank you so much!
so you only covered them with about 2" of dirt correct ? I'm going to try this thanks for the info , Peace !
Yes and keep adding more as they grow if you want a bigger harvest.

No real need to chit maincrops potatoes, just 1E/2E spuds.

Tell you what, I sowed abput 20 millions carrot seeds this year... I have 2 actual carrots growing! Next year I have to sort this out!
My potatoes were planted in October and the leaves died. Does that mean my potatoes are ruined
They won't grow anymore but you may have potatoes in there.
