In the second part of his exclusive CV Stories, Sven-Göran Eriksson talks about the years he spent with Sampdoria, before moving to Lazio and winning a league-and-cup double in 2000.
Eriksson won seven trophies while manager of Lazio. In his first season, he won the Coppa Italia and led the team to second in the 1998-99 season. In his third year, Eriksson led I Biancocelesti to only the second Serie A title in their history - and threw in another Coppa Italia too.
After nine years spent in the Italian top flight with Sampdoria and Lazio, Eriksson was offered the England job.

Really intelligent guy. I liked the part where he said that the players you have decide your system of play. Very important.

Yep - except he didn't do it for England. The Gerrard-Lampard-Scholes midfield axis should have been the best midfield in world football but instead he tried to shoehorn the three into a 4-4-2.

@@vikdaddy how is that the best midfield in the world? They have excellent technique of course but what about closing space? What about winning possession? If anything the three of them is very difficult to field together. The biggest mistake of erikson at the time was not to include Hargreaves as a key player - since he was the only holding midfielder with the right talent and winning mentality. With Hargreaves then yes a 4-3-3 would have been possible. Although then you had the problem with the wingers...who could play as wingers? Maybe rooney could have been converted, but who else? Don't forget the importance of david beckham to the team and he surely could not play as a right winger. The only real system that could have made sense for england apart from Erikson's flat 4-4-2 was a 4-4-2 diamond but I really don't think england were really suitable to play a closed game

@@darkseidistheboss5781 Easy - man-for-man, they were probably the best midfield quartet in world football. I never said they shouldn't be accompanied by a holding player, or that one of the players couldn't have played in a more attacking role as a 4-3-3. As I said, Eriksson tried to fit the foursome into a 4-4-2, and it stifled their play.

He is intelligent but that's one of the mostly used sentences by coaches and doesn't mean a lot...

He was great. I think if he stayed another few seasons at Lazio ,after the collapse of cragnotti, the club would have recovered much better. He was a master class.

Great video! You can tell he is very sincere when he says Italian football is the best. Just look at when he smiles as he reminisces about his time at Lazio. Thank you also for the video as I was not aware of how many successful Lazio were not so long ago and what a team they had.

WAS the best. At that time serie A was by far the best league but now it's definitly bellow england and spain and possibly even Germany

@@mmasavant7731 True, the quality of Serie A never really recovered after the 2006 Calciopoli scandal, although Italian sides remained competitive and still won some European titles. But I'd say that it's still the best tactically. Carlo Ancelotti explained this in an interview at FourFourTwo magazine, when he said that as Real Madrid manager he found that Spanish teams had better quality players but he was able to outsmart most Spanish managers because in Spain no team would ever change its tactics (making it easy to identify weaknesses) while in Italy these tactical changes happen every other week

Eriksson had a very good career in club management overall (league and cup doubles in Sweden, Portugal and Italy, and in European competition both the UEFA Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup). And in hindsight, his England spell, while not impressive, wasn't a failure. He did have an excellent group of players, but so did Brazil in 2002 and Portugal in 2006.
