Thank you for this - here 6 years after the fact. Don't need to replace it but do need to clean it from time to time. I am guessing every six months or so as part of regular maintenance of vacuuming out the dust from the coils and all areas underneath the fridge. Great job and great video. :-0
I can tell you my way that is a lot easier, quicker and more simple. I clean mine twice a year. I simply remove the front cover. I use my wet dry vac and a spray bottle of cleaner. First I use my wet dry vac to suck any water out of the drip tray. You don't need to remove anything but the front cover. Put an extension on the vacuum and stick it in the tray. The sides are flexible so gently press down and you can get any water out. Then I use the vacuum to suck the dust out of the vents as well. This last part is optional but I do it to kill bacteria and remove odor. I spray a mixture of water, bleach and vinegar into the tray last thing before I put the cover back on. It takes me longer to drag the wet dry vac out and plug it in then the actual cleaning does and I don't have to pull out the fridge or remove the back cover.
Why don't they design these where you can just open bottom front panel, slide the pan out, clean it then slide it back in (All from the front)?? It's such a pain to access the back, especially since my fridge sits tight between cabinets and a wall. 🙄
Man I wish I would have found this video last night before I started this nonsense. It's unconscionable that Whirlpool made the drip pan out of such cheap plastic. It's unbelievable that they locked the drain pan in with the stupid water filter holder. My kitchen is tiny and the fridge is a pain to pull out.
They make it look simple. My refrigerator has zero “extra line” from the filter so there is absolutely NO WAY to get the filter out in order to pull out the tray without unhooking and reattaching water lines to the filter. It’s ridiculous!!
I came here to say the same thing!!! 😡 Tore everything out, loosened all there is, and still not enough slack to pull out the filter. Soooo frustrating!
During this video, it is apparent that one of the water lines to the filter that connects near the back of the refrigerator is flopping around loose. No mention is made of this and it would lead to a fairly large leak once the water supply is turned back on. We own this model, and it is an absolute impossibility to get that pan out easily for cleaning. This leads to sometimes unpleasant odors that can only be lessened by adding vinegar to the tray to kill some of the smell. Poor design causes unnecessary burdens for cleaning and removal of the drip pan.
The water line shown had been cut by the previous owner and we did not replace it before shooting the video. I agree, this is a tedious procedure to remove and install the drain pan. You could try adding the vinegar by pouring it into the evaporator pan directly below the evaporator inside the freezer.
I've had some time on my hands lately and I've been deep cleaning my appliances, which are all Whirlpool or Whirlpool Gold. I don't even want to eat anymore. There are so many places for disgustingness to grow and hide that I think Whirlpool should sell their remaining inventory to the CDC and call it quits. I don't know that any other brand would be better, especially since they're often made by the same company and have the same innards. Then when I was cleaning an Ikea bookcase I found tiny spiders in the metal shelf supports 5mm posts, which are hollow in the Ikea version, unlike all the other ones I've encountered. (I'm not sure what they are called, actually. There are four per shelf. The posts fit into the drilled holes on the inner sides of the bookcase.) In 32 of those metal supports for 8 shelves, I found almost as many mini spider homes or sarcophagi. Now I'm going to tackle this drip pan thing. I'm afraid I'll faint.
consider this ridiculousness when purchasing a new unit. Of course you have to do way too much research with every brand. It should NOT be like this. It never was.

I have the same problem. Did you ever figure out how to make it work?
