Thanks Thomas for such holistic notion masterclass. Even I bought your ultimate brain, it is very valuable to tweak it further 😊
Super! Thanks for open-sourcing it! ☺
I'm VERY new to Notion and I wish I was able to join this outstanding stream. I've been exploring a number of the videos on this channel, and I've learned a great deal. Looking to exploring more of these amazing videos!!!
Love your lecture.
I learned so much.
God bless
Thanks Thomas, very useful video. A valuable source of ideas to update my work Notes Dashboard.
Awesome Notion masterclass! I'm loving the way you are breaking down each step and showing us how to build a Notes Dashboard. I'm definitely going to use this to help me to better organize my projects in Riples, the social platform for sharing and collaborating on projects.
Whaatta dude. Been wanting a place to throw notes in Notion for a while now but never paused to think it out and randomly would uses Apple Notes instead. This will be one of the last instances of running my business completely out of Notion. When I had a team I did email “memos” using normal notion functionality but OY if there’s a way to send and receive a actual email in Notion that would be the ultimate
Omg advanced filtering makes so much more sense and “advanced” makes it intimidating. Damn you notion!
Thank you Thomas, for such an informative and thorough video. It's packed with useful insights! Could you offer your advice on how to handle nested subfolders-essentially, a good practice for organizing a 'tag within a tag'?
This is really, really hard to do well. I experimented with adding sub-tags to Ultimate Notes, but eventually decided to leave them out. The main issue is quite technical, but it has to do with how the limitations of self-referential filters affect how sub-tags are displayed on their parent tag page.
It's just way to easy to create more layers of sub-tags than self-referential filters can display, which can lead users to create pages that they then can't see later on.
@@ThomasFrankExplains However, shouldn't be "subfolders" (which here means subtags) a main feature of a Note Taking system? I hardly see how organizing notes in a single layer of folders is useful in any way, without a hierachical structure. At this point, if the limitation is technical, Notion cannot be regarded as a viable Note Taking software if your aim is to store notes that are hierachical.
What about using subpages? Maybe creating a subnote with another tag that could be regarded as "subtag" even though it is not formally a subtag in the tags database? Would that solve in any way this issue in your opinion and experience?
I have been watching your videos, and you have helped me SO MUCH with learning Notion.
Quick Question: How does this ultimate notes database and the tags work alongside the PARA system? I can't seem to work this through myself. Maybe it's super obvious, I'm a noob. Lol
Very nice your live performance thx for all those insigths
Thank you!
A must watch for sure
Thanks for the great course on Notion. For me, by the way, such a course is a training in English, because it is not my native language :-) Speaking speed of the presenter knocks down, but they give advice. Thanks.
Amazing content, Thomas! Thank you.
Maybe you know how to make that Notion consider the end date as the 'due date', instead of the 'start date'? I've seen one of your videos explaining that, but it's from 2020 and i can't find that feature available in that place anymore. Do you know where it could be? Would be amazing if you could guide me on that. Many thanks again!
Notion recently fixed this! When you filter by a Date property now, you can choose the Start Date or the End Date. Here's an example you can duplicate: thomasfrank.notion.site/End-Date-as-Due-Date-20996fa3a55247d0b0e71544ab9fcb25?pvs=4
I am new to this Notion. I am a beginner and don't even know how it works. some one suggested i need to look in to this product for collaboration. I have a couple of questions
1. Does this product support other language locals ? example Arabic, Japanese, Amharic..etc ..fonts ?
2. do you have a basic beginners course step by ste that i can use to actually start learning ?
SUGGESTION FOR FLYLIGHTER As a musician (it would change my life)
I already have my playlists to organize my references, but sometimes you save a song in "chorus ideas" and it would be great if you could leave a note developing the idea further ("see how the bass interacts with the...").
A lot of times you just forget. You know the song has a good chorus, but maybe you don't remember everything you thought of the first time.
I've always wanted to be able to make notes on a video that catches my attention and have them there when I go back. IT WOULD BE GREAT if it worked with spotify, but if it worked on UA-cam music, I would definitely leave spotify for UA-cam music, 100%.
PLEASE MAKE THIS POSSIBLE
You should open all of your videos with a short “noodle guitar session”! :)
Please do explain what tags, favorite, recent etc pages are for? what is there aim?
I love this, but I just finished the "Building a Second Brain from Scratch" tutorial and I don't know how to integrate this with that workflow...any tips?
Fantastic Video as always. I am wondering about Tags and specifically using a relation database as the Tags like in this video. How should we deal with Notes that have multiple tags? I am setting up a database to keep track of traits in people with Aautism. When you enter a 'Note" or Trait, each Trait could link to more than 1 Tag. I created a database for the Tags so that each Tag can have resource infor mation and web clippings to that relevant Tag.
When entering a new Note/Trait, selecting one Tag is easy enough, but when it's time to select more than one tage, it gets messy, especially if you are adding the Tag to an existing Note in Tbale view. Instinct says to just click the Tag field on that line item and select the relevant tags from the list. BUT, when you do that it clicks intot the Page related to the tag that is already in that field.
I hope what I wrote there makes sense.
I see the flylighter waiting list is a Notion Page as a website. Been so curious about the SEO of that. I’ve read it isn’t great
When you mention you can add "Favourite" page as widget on iPhone or Android, do you mean you have to use mobile browser on phone and add the page as shortcut on phone?

What is a use case where you wouldn’t want duel direction relations? Also I often end up using relations to the same database which is amazing but would be more amazing if when adding linked entries i could sort them by type (Project vs Task for example, which I have a mental logic struggle with separating as two databases - it is too black and white)
Hi..how do i apply a template to existing notes, so they all have the fileds present in a new note?
So curious what your team is like. And brand story. Did this happen by accident, or did someone hire you like in LA as a host - it feels like a hybrid of both.
I want to use it. But I have no idea of how to feed your template. Plz do a session for how to use your template.
There's a getting started video at the top of the template page - give that a watch and you should be good to go! thomasjfrank.com/templates/notion-note-taking-template/
Hey Thomas, you can add Spanish subtitles to better enjoy the content. Greetings!! 👋👋
Great tutorial! I have one question: how can I sync data from separate databases?
For example: I have one database in which I have calculated a column.
Now I want to sync in a second database a column with the results from the first database to do further calculation.
Is that possible?
Is this front page a Wiki? The UI feels clunky there and I never know if I should build with or without. And I end up making wikis but keeping databases elsewhere or they display in the Wiki weird
Interesting. I build backwards. Using template to build the database and then default different views to new filtered tabs or sections. Your way is way faster.
Await can any databases send to the same archive ?!
“Six dot” menu and “three dot” menu makes me LOL
Like where is this database in the architecture ?!
Was curious about the Notion as a webpage SEO effectiveness because I love the idea of making my portfolio a database with a display page that served as the website, but am not sure this is realistic.
I wouldn't use Notion for anything SEO-focused. Notion page can rank well, but they're not always the fastest. In general I rely on WordPress for anything that's meant to be public-facing!
I get so confused between making one database with different views (which I’d prefer if the “New” button would not show ALL the database properties and not just the properties in that view) vs. More databases. More databases just ends up being piles of old databases after time. Whereas one database I can pragmatically build for a future where I’ll be running all my own analytics across social platforms. I.e. I love that my CRM and CMS is combined. Though I use a separate Projects database for tasks and production. Basically everything is just those two databases though.
Ugh I should have been here live. So many questions. Next time. Next time
1:11:00 - quick links
What is that bar on the left of the web browser?!
What is inbox? Your every template has the inbox. I do not get this concept of Inbox. Can someone explain, please?
Inbox is for items that you have quickly captured but have not yet assigned other properties, like due date for tasks, related to project, type of item, etc.
He has a lot of specific database views that filter items based on properties. If you do not assign properties then the items will not show up.
That is why there is an inbox. To make sure things don't get lost if they are missing important meta data.
Ugh I feel like all my questions would be semi answered by templates, but I don’t learn anything unless I do it myself, from scratch
Notion master database
Re: tabs vs side view, I wish I could open new instances of the actual notion app window
I wanna be in that test flight lol
How is hiding columns helpful when you can see them all in the “new entry” page??? Do people enter entries in the actual table view?? I just feel like if the “always hide” customization would DEFAULT to that entry page view pop up (slide over?).
Yep, I add entries in the table view all the time and so do a lot of other folks.
And even on the actual page, you can hide properties you don't need to see very often!
Re: my earlier question I suppose comments would be better responded to with resources if it this brand was a production first initiative.
I want an email list audience of pro tips with shortcuts and integrations. Also I want to say automations but they have never worked reliably for me
just curious why not multiple tags to one note?
You absolutely can!
In Relation properties, you can choose to limit one or both sides to 1 page. But by default, there's no limit - so you can do many-to-many relations.
Why create tags as a page vs using the tags property?
By using pages, you can create a template for your Tags database that shows all notes related to each tag within its tag page.
This works like other note-taking apps (think Evernote), where you can go into a folder and see all your notes there, sort them as you want, do additional filtering, etc.
If we just use a Multi-Select property (like the default Tags property), we can't do this.
@@ThomasFrankExplains One more follow up, can you get the color on the tags like in a multi-select property?

Just turned off the Notion AI subscription. It never did want I wanted and I never stumbled across enough reasons to need it. I use GPT too much and Notion AI’s skills are just too… oblivious? … to feel helpful instead of frustrating. IDK why anyone competes against GPT. I would pay for GPT in Notion. Imagine being able to put your Copy prompts for drafting in a field properties instructions. I suppose I had a little fun with the Property where you could ask AI for whatever, but again, I never knew if it would work or if it would be clueless to what I’m asking.
58:30 - Tags
It is annoying, especially when i have to apply (sort and filter) everytime i add “tag template”
Anyway thankyou for the tutorial 🙏🏻
Can you expand on that? If you're creating new pages from a tag template, you shouldn't have to add sort and filter criteria. The self-referential filters shown in this video solve that problem.
@@ThomasFrankExplains wow i didn't expect you would like to reply my chat 😀 thankyou anyway it's an honor
My notion problem is:
1. I have to apply (sort & filter) every time i make new "Tag Template" and every time i did the "Favorite" "Recent"
2. I can't do "[ ]" this function
> Quick Link | [Tag] | [Favorite]
So, in my notion, i only could add it below the Quick Link
3. I can't make "inbox" (link) in Header 1.. in my notion it have to be small, same as page
I think thats all my problem..
anyway thankyou for the tutorial,
Can't wait for the next tutorial 😁
lol who shows database title unless on the main database page where hyou can’t hide it
Soon we’ll just tell AI what setup we want for a new tab view lol
Cute studio. AI?
Ah-ha, okay I do that with my databases. Yay. But wait is it just going to sit there under Note Board? Like go away link to databases . Ohh okay Notes board is a dumping place, potentially to make other views from?
Woah fly lights needs a new logo brah - maybe even just drop the booger/puke green that does not make me feel like something is trustworthy. Something that makes “fly lights” more intuitive a name cause it’s a thinker atm. Not a huge one but takes a moment. Like the idea of “highlighting” is … i mean idk the last time I used a highlighter and even with text (usually in notion) i don’t use it i color the text. “Capture” is modern. Idk why “copy paste” doesn’t trigger the word highlight in the brain. Copy is gold to pay into. lol now I’m getting asd fixated in unsolicited advice when all i wanted to say is the color theory of that logo is off for trust
I agree, that shade of yellow wasn't very good. It was basically a placeholder logo I put together - we've got a more refined version coming out shortly!
