      The pepper seeds they sell these days are weak compared to what they were 15 years ago. I’ve stop regarding jalapeños as spicy, not that they can’t be, but the giant ones that every grocery store sells, are about as hot as an Anaheim.

    Ducks, like birds in general, aren't bothered by capsaicin. That's why they tell you to mix cayenne pepper in with your bird seed to discourage squirrels raiding the bird feeder. It's the difference between lips and beaks

    • @MartinFinnerup
      @MartinFinnerup 4 місяці тому +5

      Well, you're half-right. It doesn't have anything to do with mouth vs. beak.
      It's the fact that birds lack the taste receptors that mammals have, which detect capsaicin (the hot, burny chemical).
      Not-so-fun fact: Mammals also have those same receptors in the other end, (front and back too), hence why hot peppers can sometimes burn twice.
      Once on the way in, and once on the way out. Also why you should wash your hands after handling strong peppers.

    You could try an ID on his collar and a sensor on the door to notify you when he's close to the coup. You can watch on the cam to see if he's stealing and correct accordingly. I can't currently find the one we used on the farm, but that was the easiest way we found to train our dogs, we just had to haul ass when we saw

    • @bakaichigo
      @bakaichigo 4 місяці тому +13

      OH that's a GREAT idea! There's all kinds of tutorials on how to DIY these sorts of doggy doors and stuff now; could have the chips react and send a notification to the phone instead of closing a door like in the tutorial videos (for stopping dogs from eating cat litter - the RFID on the tags triggers the action to close door when dog approaches and open when dog leaves - a similar thing can be done to trigger a notification instead, I'm sure).
      That'd be a fairly quick notice, and if it's paired with one of those pet-cams where you can speak through the camera at the animal, then maybe more immediate corrections can happen while Nate or Jen are on-route to the duck coup!
      I know they have the cameras with motion detectors for pets but those get a little pricey and it might be cheaper to DIY instead... Either way, that's a good idea~! :)

    • @Sphendrana
      @Sphendrana 4 місяці тому +20

      Having worked in CCTV security and knowing how motion sensing cameras work, looking at this video there's absolutely no way I would be able to trust the footage without reviewing it extensively anyways. It's going to pick up on Az just walking around for the most part when he just hangs around in that area, setting them off near constantly, so about the same amount of footage would be recorded and need to be looked over just as much.
      Another factor is changes in lighting (clouds can set off motion cams) and small things like plants or bugs can do it too. Just about anything can set them off, even just cloud shadows. The way the ones I worked with functioned was to take a baseline still image and compare it to the next one and calculate how many pixels are a different color and count that towards the motion tracking software, which can create frequent false positives in outdoor areas.
      While it's a great idea, it's not a perfect solution, and motion cameras are pretty expensive for ones that aren't low quality and easily activated by the slightest breeze. This is just my formerly professional opinion, as my knowledge of motion tracking software/hardware is dated back to 2016.

      @@Sphendrana fair enough, I have no real knowledge on subject.
      My thought was since it is inside a small barn area, then having something that picks up on movement inside and pings your phone to watch the live footage would enable him to check if Az is the one who triggered it, if so then he can correct him immediately. If it works for ring doorbells I would’ve thought it could work for this but again, I’m just working off logic and have no experience in this. Interesting subject

      Problem: This is a duck coop. The ducks would simply activate the sensor themselves when going back and forth.

    From a 1941 appellate case in Mississippi.
    In the case of Hull v. Scruggs, 191 Miss. 66, 2 So.2d 543 (1941), the MSSC reversed. Justice Griffith wrote the following for the court:
    It is a fact of common knowledge that when a dog has once acquired the habit of egg-sucking there is no available way by which he may be broken of it, and that there is no calculable limit to his appetite in the indulgence of the habitual propensity. And generally he has a sufficient degree of intelligence that he will commit the offense, and return to it upon every clear opportunity, in such a stealthy way that he can seldom be caught in the act itself.
    ___________
    Thought it was interesting. If all else fails, some reinforcement to the coup might be in hand. Ducks can fit into tighter spots than Az. Might be fun creating a duck castle. Might even be easier than training as well. All the best 👍

    Hot sauce doesn´t affect ducks as they lack the taste receptor required for tasting capsaicin. Hot peppers developed capsaicin to deter mammals from them, because mammals digestive system can digest the seeds and render them useless. If a bird eats it though, it is beneficial for the plant, because birds can´t digest those seeds and spread them over a bigger area when they come from the rear end. That is why hot peppers took advantage of mammal ability to taste capsaicin. Even fish and reptiles can´t taste it.

Teach him that he is the PROTECTOR of the eggs and he gets rewarded for doing so.

    Birds and animals who don't have salivary glands/mucus membranes in their mouth do not get affected by capsaicin. That's why you can spike bird food with hot sauce or hot pepper flakes and similar to keep squirrels and similar pests out of the bird food. A bit of Chilli flakes or powder in the chickens food will help make their eggs taste better too. Plus it helps as an antibiotic if I remember right.

    Birds in general do not mind peppers because capsaicin doesn't really affect them unlike all us mammals.
    Capsaicin is what causes the spicy heat of most peppers. Birds are widely unaffected by it or are minimally affected by it. Mammals on the other hand we have to deal with the pain lol.
    So you could sprinkle some hot powders on eggs and among the coop they would be fine for the birds, it also deters small mammals as well like rats or mice.
