I'm a 62 year old black man who grew up watching this show . I still watch it till this day on Hulu. This show inspired me to be a writer . I still want to write a sitcom. But I might be too old. 😥
I do too! Between The Dick Van Dyke Show and I Love Lucy....there is just something good, calming and special in these shows! I really do enjoy these shows....
As near perfect a sitcom as TV ever had..THE high water mark for the genre, in terms of writing, casting, and a mirror of the times it was made, while still remaining timeless. The DVD show was, indeed, the television sitcom's Camelot.
Your last point was much closer in some ways than many people think! Dick (at 35 on Dec. 13, 1960) was the most handsome man on television, and President Kennedy was just as great looking, at only 43, a full 27 years younger than the outgoing President Eisenhower. Mary, was absolutely gorgeous (and very talented in so quickly learning the fine art of comedy) at only 24, on Dec. 29, 1960. Of course, Jacqueline was just as gorgeous at only 32 (on July 28, 1961) Now, comes the really interesting coincidence among these famous couples! The day President Kennedy was inaugurated was Friday, January 20, 1961. The very same day, "The Dick Van Dyke Show" started filming its first episode! Although it did not air until October 3. The worst day in that golden era was, of course, when in the middle of filming "Happy Birthday and Too Many More" (aired on Feb. 5, 1964; seen after 1:16:40), the radio announced the president had been murdered on another Friday, two years, 10 months and two days after his inauguration. The cast decided there would be no studio audience, since no one was in the mood to laugh at such a sad time. The Dick Van Dyke Show continued its five-year run until the sad day it aired its final episode, "The Last Chapter" (Jun. 1, 1966, that I remember wishing it wasn't the end), as the series was my favorite of all the programs on the air then. I had watched it every Wednesday night since I found it in 1964. It would have started filming its first color season, in its 6th season, in Sep. 1966. I knew there would never be another series (even Mary's later named series) as great all-around as "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Oct. 3, 1961 - Jun. 1, 1966.
I can not tell you how appreciative I am for this production documenting _The Dick Van Dyke Show._ I have been watching, enjoying and ultimately loving _The Dick Van Dyke Show_ since I was old enough to watch television. My perception and appreciation for the production and the cast’s quality, subtle genius and elegant quality - and even humanity - has only become greater in my estimation with my own age and maturity. I am also so pleased that you included so many of the minor and supporting cast, crew and production staff, people who I always value for their incredible talent whenever I encounter a television production I love but who rarely get the public credit they deserve. Thank you for shining a wide light on so much more of the Van Dyke show than, so far as I’m aware, has ever been illuminated before and allowing us all to enjoy its shining brillance.
Thank you so much for the very positive feedback. I am so pleased that you enjoyed it. It was a labor of love to produce. I am curious how you came to find out about my documentary. Please let me know. And please feel free to share the link with others that might be interested in watching. Thumbs up!
I grew up watching the Dick Van Dyke show. Literally. One thing I loved about this episode was that it showed such a kind bunch of people in every way, every time, yet these people were so human and so real. It was a great inspiration to me in my life. This was a great celebration of an iconic comedy classic.
I read an interview with Alan Zweibel, one of the original SNL writers. He said this show was an inspiration to him as well. He said he got into comedy writing because he wanted to work in an office with people like Rob, Buddy, and Sally. Unfortunately, the SNL office was nothing like the DVD office as so many of the SNL writers and cast struggled with drug abuse, including Zweibel.
Bravo! This was one of the top two comedies that I watched in re-runs. I was born in 1963, so by '72, the show was in syndication, as was "I Love Lucy." I grew up with these shows, and they were part of my childhood. Thank you so much for celebrating 60 years of Dick Van Dyke Show. I am 61 yrs old, and I still watch at least one episode daily. I feel like they were part of my family as well. Thank you and God bless.
This was THE best documentary in the show. I love the deep dive into the show and the people! Interviews with the guest stars was so wonderful to see. Thank you so much for this!!!

Thank you for posting this. I watch The Dick Van Dyke shows every night. I have watched since I was a toddler when it 1st aired. I remember getting in trouble because I would sneak out of bed and try to watch the show on in the living room from the hallway. I really appreciated being able to watch this special 60th anniversary show and hear of all the wonderful experiences people had making it. This show brings so much comfort and normalcy. Again, thank you!
Ditto on everything (including watching since a toddler) except the sneaking out of bed. LOL That's pretty funny. I love that. Yes, it does bring great comfort and normalcy. I've been watching daily during the COVID pandemic. I still laugh aloud!
OMGosh!! I can't believe I've never seen this tribute before. I'm 66 yrs old and have been watching The Dick Van Show since is was on in Prime Time back in the early 60s. It was a funny show ! It certainly was a mirrored reflection of JFK and Jackie. It was a simpler time when talent and writing were in the driver's seat. No shock, no vulgarity, nothing political. Just pure comedy with top talent in all the categories. It's still a winner over most new sitcoms on TV now !
Outstanding sitcom and outstanding documentary! The Dick Van Dyke Show is the tops of TV in so many ways. Thank you, David Van Deusen , for creating such a superb tribute on the 60th Anniversary of the show.

I watched the Dick Van Dyke Show when I was a small child. Dick Van Dyke was SO FUNNY ! My Favorite thing about the show was the Physical Stunts and his body movements. The skit where he tells the story of the Drunk Uncle and he plays Drunk. Sits down and pours out of the chair like a Rubber Band. He was just so Amazing with the Body Stunts. It was an HONOR to meet him in person at Pheonix ComiCon 2014. :)
Great documentary. Thank you. The DVDS will go down in history as one of the best shows ever. They were the Kennedy's and Beatles rolled into one. To this day I watch and feel better afterward.
This is obviously a labor of love. Must have taken a HUGE amount of both to come up with and bring to fruition this thoroughly enjoyable, engaging and engrossing tribute. I doubt it will ever be equalled - much like the DVD show itself! I rate The Dick Van Dyke Show - Celebrating the 60th Anniversary an 11 out of 10 for sure!!!!
OMG look at Ritchie! :D So nice to see him! This was amazing to watch. I've loved this show for years, and still to this day I put it on whenever I don't know what to watch but I know I want to laugh and feel good. This show has something that newer shows today don't.
Absolutely outstanding documentary about the series that inspired me to become a writer. The writers room scenes were always my favorites. Thank you to all involved in this marvelous project. Well done!
The Dick VanDyke show was very important to me. I watched and learned how to do slapstick along with comic timing. Laura was easy to look at for a budding young man. Rob helped me to see how an adult male acted. At home, my male model wasn't very good, so I watched Rob interact with everyone for clues on how I should act in real life. All love for The DVD show!
I had fun watching this ensemble of memories from original participants and heirs with a show that has endured the test of time. Seeing "bit" players, hearing that everyone was openly welcomed, with some considering the experience a career highlight is a testimonial as to how genuinely real and caring people were with one another at that time. I've always loved Dick Van Dyke. Step-in-Time. Thank you for sharing!.
David, what you've done here is brilliant. This is a deep dive into the show, and you got so many people to participate. Thank you, I loved the show and I love this documentary.
Thank you, Dave. It was just fabulous to revisit memories of the show with so many who were part of it. And, as you can tell, they really enjoyed talking about it.
THANK YOU! So glad I found this video. This show was part of my childhood, watching with my family. It's wonderful to hear that these people were such good people in addition to their great talent. Hearing all the "inside" tidbits is always fun. For as anxious as I was to grow up and go out in my own, I'd give anything now for one more night with Mom and Dad and The Dick Van Dyke Show. ❤
I love that there is at least one blooper that they just left in the series. I think it's a first season episode. They are in the kitchen and Rob reaches for the phone, picks it up and begins dialing. As he's holding it to his ear, he flips thru the phone book, scans down a page, taps it with his finger and says "That's right!" or something similar. Anyways, the audience picks us on the goof and lets out a bit of a laugh, and he glances up at the audience with a grin but he carries on with the scene. It goes by so quickly one could easily miss it.
I attempted to contact as many folks as I could that were involved with the show so that their memories could be included. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Feel free to share with others who might be interested. Thanks!
There are no words to convey the significance and talents of this show. It still touches a comic cord. How moving to see the family members of all these artists. As Fame came to them, they were not blindsided by it. The most important part of living took center stage: loving their spouses and their children.
Well done David Van Deusen. Well done documentary tribute video to one of the best comedy sitcoms ever made that featured an excellent cast! One of my favorite shows of all time. David Van Deusen you did Dick Van Dyke nd the rest of the cast members proud!
Hi David!!! I loved the documentary!!! So great to hear all the great stories from all of those people who were part of the show! It was so special! Thank you!! Alison (from the Desilu event)
I love how Larry Mathews was so complimentary of all those people he worked with. He made them sound like fine people. He looks much the same as he did when he was that cute, chubby faced little boy.
@@dvdcommunications do you think the creators of The Big Bang Theory are fans of the show? Two of the principal characters were called Sheldon and Leonard!
As great as the entire cast was, I'd like to single out Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam. Their chemistry and existing friendship added so much to the show. They were just hilarious together.
Rose Marie was on the verge of being fired from the DVDS. As more of the focus shifted to Rob's home life, more screen time went to MTM and Rose Marie constantly complained about it to Carl Reiner. Her complaints fell on deaf ears however. Reiner told her, in NO uncertain terms, that this was the way it was going to be and if she didn't like it, he could find a replacement.
I showed it to my (ex-) wife in the 1980s and she thought it was so relatable to her life. Today I showed it to my Swiss-born daughters and they love it.
I'd very much like to add my (English) voice to the clamour of congratulations which are seen below. What an extensive, comprehensive, and thoroughly deserved tribute to this always classic show. The only slight disappointment for me is that we didn't get to see Dick himself. I do hope he's OK. Again, many congratulations on a wonderful walk down memory lane. Thank you.
I’ve seen a few compilation/tributes to The Dick Van Dyke Show , but this one had me laughing and, yes, crying! Such a complete and thorough set of memories, insights and pure joy! It really should be shown on CBS, MEtv or any broadcast network or channel or even streaming service! Now please excuse me, because tonight MEtv is playing the 2 Stacey Petrie nightclub/girlfriend he’s never met episodes, and I want to make sure I don’t miss them!
The Dick Van Dyke Show is just incredible. I fell in love with this show as a little boy in the late sixties, when it aired on WLWT on Saturday evenings. It was my favorite comedy show then, and is still my favorite comedy. The cast was first-rate, and the characters they brought to life were very believable. The cast evidently got along well, and that showed. The show regularly gave us not one happy couple (Rob and Laura), but another happy couple as well (Millie and Dr. Jerry Helper). Plus it gave us a woman in the office who was an equal (Sally Rogers). I also liked Buddy, Ritchie, and Mel. Ritchie was a generally good, but definitely not perfect, son. Not to mention how humorous he was).
Hi Daniel...I'm always happy to hear from other fans of The Dick Van Dyke Show. I'm pleased you continue to enjoy the show and I hope you found some interesting nuggets of information in my documentary.
I was about 4 years old when the DVD Show began and I watched it every week until it ended; plus re-runs. Even at 4 years old, I loved it, even though I obviously didn't understand what made it funny beyond Dick's physical comedy. I'm convinced, though, that the DVD Show shaped my sense of humor as an adult.
One of the things that made The Dick VanDyke Show so beloved is that this was the first sitcom that was not afraid to show people displaying human foibles and awkwardness. This happens in real life. This show did not write its characters as having perfect thoughts or dialogue, and displayed more of a realistic depiction of how people were. This is something the audience could relate to.
I wasn't allowed to stay up to watch it. But if I heard Dad laughing while I was trying to fall asleep, I'd ask him the next day what was so funny. He usually responded, "The Dick Van Dyke Show."
Such a spectacularly wonderful show! Interesting to hear all the performers mention how family-like the show was and how talented everyone was. The DVDS was before my time, but I get to enjoy it on steaming channels. Interesting to see up and coming stars be guests. Great documentary. Hoping Hollywood give Dick Van Dyke a few more roles to play. I read he's 95 but still going strong. God Bless Him! Jeremy Clyde's memories were particularly poignant of Dick coming to set after giving an eulogy at Stan Laurel's funeral. Both Stan and Dick were brilliant performers.
The thing that I really loved about the show was that in the exchanges of dialogue between the characters, I never felt, just as with Andy Griffith, that they were insulting my/our intelligence with lame setups for even lamer punchline jokes. They let the situation and the physical comedy, and the timing of their delivery of the lines be the "funny"..not thinly disguised vaudevillian jokes. Further, I appreciated that it had an adult feel, at least as far as adults of that generation, to it with no childish put-down, insult humor. It was never ever that inane or mean-spirited. But, it was not fluff, either. Talent, relatability, and a clever intelligence all came together maybe as well as had ever been seen on TV to that point, and probably until Mary's show in the '70's and Newhart's first show. In that fashion, the DICK VAN DYKE show itself was brilliant, and the talent was obviously at that level, too. That, outside of news programming, and educational programming, and drama, is really what network television from the jump in the '40's, should have always been about. Lastly, this tribute was one of the best documentaries that I've seen..maybe, ever on youtube.. MARVELOUS JOB.. Thanks..

Thanks for the feedback, Peter. I had a blast putting this all together and I'm very pleased that so many are enjoying it, too.
Love the show.... Will never go stale. I grew up with this show. Great Documentary!!
Thank you for including everyone ever connected with the show. This documentary is done as well as the Dick Van Dyke show. Worthy. ❤️
Thank you Maria. I'm very pleased that you enjoyed it.
OMG look at Ritchie! :D So nice to see him! This was amazing to watch. I've loved this show for years, and still to this day I put it on whenever I don't know what to watch but I know I want to laugh and feel good. This show has something that newer shows today don't.
Thanks for your positive feedback. Feel free to share the link with other fans of the show.
Absolutely outstanding documentary about the series that inspired me to become a writer. The writers room scenes were always my favorites. Thank you to all involved in this marvelous project. Well done!
Thanks Robert. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a labor of love. Feel free to share!
I have seen every episode of this show and I love each and every single one of them.
They are one of the best cast ensembles ever put together!
♥♥♥♥ - I can find no words. Thank you Mr. Van Deusen!
Thanks Mark! Please share the link with other fans who might also enjoy it. Thumbs up!
What a well done, thoroughly researched and presented documentary on my favorite show of all time. Bravo David and all!
Thanks Brian.
Amazing writing ! I watch the Dick Van Dyke Show everyday to escape from the pain of this crazy world and relax and reboot
Yes, Rob, a great scene! I hope you enjoyed the documentary.
This is my favorite DVD documentary about my favorite sitcom ever!
Thanks Kathi. Please share so that others have a chance to see it, too.
Thanks, Dave! This is a really fine tribute to the cast, writers and directors of a fabulous show.
Thank, Jane (and Gary, too). I appreciate it!
It's 4:20am I had to finish watching. And I enjoyed it very much. Good morning !!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Maria! Feel free to share with others. Thumbs up!
Thanks I will😘
Clean wholesome comedy .., soooooo needed
I'm amazed that you managed to get hold of so many people, especially Jeremy Clyde, Michael Forest, and Jerry Lanning.
Thanks Stephanie!
Well done David Van Deusen. Well done documentary tribute video to one of the best comedy sitcoms ever made that featured an excellent cast! One of my favorite shows of all time. David Van Deusen you did Dick Van Dyke nd the rest of the cast members proud!
Thank you for your feedback. I am happy that you enjoyed the documentary.
Great job with this David. So glad it's being shared widely!
Thank Dan!
One of the greatest shows ever!
Sheldon Leonard was a genius. What a gift he shared with us.
Sheldon was amazing!
@@dvdcommunications do you think the creators of The Big Bang Theory are fans of the show?
Two of the principal characters were called Sheldon and Leonard!
@@michaelrwilson007 the character’s names were an intentional tip of the hat to Sheldon!
Thank you so much for creating this!♥️
Thank you Lynn. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Please share it with others!
This was fantastic!! Thank you! 👏🏻
Thank you, Beth. 👍
Fantastic! Worthy of the the DVD show. ❤️
Thank you Mark!
I showed it to my (ex-) wife in the 1980s and she thought it was so relatable to her life. Today I showed it to my Swiss-born daughters and they love it.
I watched it was I was a kid and still do. Love the show and everyone on it. Just a great show.
I still love watching this show.
Thank you.
Thank you, Michael. I appreciate your feedback (in your English voice!) Dick is doing pretty well at age 96.
I was verklempt throughout the entire show. Excellent! thank you!
Thank you for the positive feedback. Please feel free to share with other fans of the show.
That was beyond excellent.
Thanks Tom. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Feel free to share with others. Thumbs up!
What a marvelous tribute! The audience focuses on the stars and easily overlook or forget the support staff who make the program, the comdedy, work,
Thanks so much Steven. I'm glad you enjoy it. Please share with others who you think might be interested.
Thanks Fred. I appreciate it. Please spread the word so that others can see and enjoy it, too!
EXCELLENT interviews-
Thank you for your feedback.
Delightful documentary. Especially cool are the rehearsal photos!
Thank you, Kelsey. It was just terrific to put together. Please feel free to share the link with other fans of the show.
Watching this wonderful show repeatedly has replaced comfort food for me! It comforts me right from the opening note of the theme song!
I watch it on a loop when I get home from work .good back round noise😊
Brilliant. Loved this so much!!!
Thank you Marc!
I was very young watching the Dick van Dyke and loved all the characters and the interior designs.
I agree with Mark Riddle. What a great Doc. I've never seen so many stills from the show! Great Job!
Thank you, Linda. I have accumulated extensive archives through the years and it was a pleasure to share them with other fans of the show.
Thanks for the feedback David. I appreciate it and I'm happy that you enjoyed it. It was great fun to put together.
What a great show what an amazing cast they had.
Thanks..
Thanks, Robert, for your thoughts and positive feedback. The documentary was great fun to put together.
Oh
Amazing actors, amazing writers, amazing show!!!
Amazing effort to put this all together and so much fun to hear from the secondary characters
